You need to swing the scythe rapidly in a circle around you by the end of the handle- while moving.

Leni jumps up, and brings the blade down hard on the zombie's head. It causes it to stumble back, but it is still coming toward the group.
"Well, S**t." Leni slashes at it several more times.
