CleoSombra Kuroyanagika Was I the only one who associated this "Raptor is coming!" to a meme called "Raptor Awareness Day"? Raptor Jesus has been a meme for a very long while now. Gaia didn't make it up. It's just another internet meme, which can be a little sensitive, yes. But a lot of memes similar to that one are sensitive. Those people that they 'make fun of', I don't really see it that way. It's all in good fun. But I guess one bad egg ruins everyone else's fun. Though, Gaia can't do much anything without being seen as bashing religion. I mean, the last cirque rig? There was sooo much drama over the pentagram being upsidedown and "satanist" when you know all too well they didn't mean anything remotely similar to that. And you know, Cleo, Christianity is mainstream. Everyone knows that it exists, pretty much. I'm sure there are people on Gaia that don't know what Buddhism is or other religions are. Even the non-religious people know enough about Christianity to recognize it. I guess that's why everyone associates /anything/ religious found on Gaia to Christianity, when it could easily be blanketed over several religions. Just saying. Kuro, two things: Gaia is not the internet. On the internet, you can post porn. You can insult people. You can make fun of people. You can post shock and gore. You cannot do these things on Gaia. Secondly, this isn't about religion. This isn't about Christianity. This is about making fun of people and mocking their beliefs as stupid and silly. This is not unlike what Gaia did with Charlie Sheen and mental illness. Orly? Hrm. Gaia is /on/ the internet. Course, you can't post porn here, or excessively violent stuff, but there's a lot of sites that restrict those. I'm willing to bet, that if any other popular avatar forum did this, it wouldn't be such a big deal. I don't care if Gaia did it, and I sure as hell don't care that Ernya or any other avatar site does it. There are some things I see that people laugh about that I find wrong, but hey, everyone has a different sense of humor. Now see. If Gaia put up a hot topic about Osama's death, I would've been furious. That is just an entirely different thing altogether. This Raptor Jesus thing is just a light joke/meme and shouldn't really be taken seriously. I know I saw a few people in the Raptor is Coming hot topic that also disagreed with this, on religious reasons. But I also saw people from that same religion say the same thing I am. "Lighten up and learn to take a joke." Honestly. There's going to be people that take offense at /something/ but not all people of that demographic would feel the same way. I still say it's all in good fun. I know a few really religious people on Gaia and they didn't take offense to this at all. As one of them said, jokes like this won't affect their faith, no matter how hard people try.

I was just in the Raptor forum. There was a very nice Christian in there, he was very upset about the item but not being overly horrible about it. It's nice when people actually follow what their religion sets out rather than go round picking and choosing so much.
I know this is random but that guy made me feel a little hopeful. I'm not religious at all, I live by my own moral code, and it's nice to see people actually living by some of the teaching that are actually set out in their religions as the main ones, that don't harm other people, than just pointlessly attacking people for disagreeing

I keep reading people saying "As a Christian, I ________" or "As a Catholic, I ________." But Gaia isn't making fun of Christians or Catholics. It's making fun of the people who believe that the rapture is near. What really bothers me above everything is that for Gaia, it's okay to make fun of some things and not other things. I can't make fun of people based on their race or ethnicity, but Gaia can make fun of people who believe in what they define as "stupid" things. By doing that, you make it okay to bash some people and not others. You give dignity to some people and not others. At least with shows like Southpark and Family Guy, everything is fair game. Otherwise, nothing is. Why is it that Gaia will make fun of these people, but we don't have any explicitly religious symbols on this site? Why doesn't Gaia make forums that make fun of religions? People are making fun of people who believe in the rapture because they think those beliefs are ridiculous. There are people who feel that anyone who believes in someone who dies and is resurrected again is insane. Why doesn't Gaia create a "Zombie Jesus" forum during Easter?

I just need to brag a little. I'm in the top 3 of my Gateway class. I won the Gateway scholarship. Two years ago I had no clue what I was going to do about school and now I'm at the top of the class.

Gaia does have religious symbols on this site. It's not specific to any one religion, though (a few are, but not all). Those items aren't making fun of the religion, but they're still religious items. I remember one person upset at Gaia because of the cross in this item: http://www.gaiaonline.com/marketplace/itemdetail/1497 -shrugs- And you know how horribly it'll turn out of Gaia made a forum like that. It's one thing to be silly, and it's one thing to encourage flaming. I didn't see much flaming in the rapture forum, except for the people flaming Gaia for, you know, making the subforum in the first place. And Cleo, you really should know this since you're a psych student and all, but look. In society, there's certain things that are deemed "okay" to joke about. I know you keep saying "South Park" and "Family Guy", but honestly, that's not how it really is. You could get into some deep s**t if you started talking racist against someone. People can sue over racism and win. People can't sue over satire and expect to win as easily.

I think there's a connection you're making which shouldn't be made. Mocking a belief, is not mocking a person.
I mock almost everything, but that doesn't mean I don't have respect for people.

You want to live a dream... Trivial worry is trivial:
Should I scribble out the smiley face or no? I drew a small smiley face next to the kanji for ninja, mostly just to indicate I that I found it amusing that this particularly kanji was one of the "fun fact" kanji that my professor puts on the sheets. However, he said that he thought doodling on assignments was immature...
It's not this enormous, detailed smiley face... just a kind of 8D face.
Should I scribble it out?
Fall asleep and never wake up...

People can sue over racism and win. People can't sue over satire and expect to win as easily. I'm sorry, but bringing up whether I've ever insulted or made fun of anyone in my life . . . it doesn't sit well with me. Someone made a similar remark in Site Feedback and I explained myself then. I'm too sleepy to reiterate it and I'm not going to copy-paste it.
This thread is supposed to be about sharing our secrets and things that are bothering us. I'm kind of confused as to why I'm in the position that I'm in right now. neutral
And I'm tired of people saying "Since you're a psych student." I'm sorry, but it really irritates me. People blasted me a few times for mentioning it when I was doing so to clarify my point of view. They were whining about how I was apparently bragging/boasting/whatever. If I can't bring my psych-student-ness into arguments, then neither should other people.
I don't really care what our culture says is okay to make fun of and what isn't. There was a time when our culture deemed it okay to make people of other races and ethnicities sit in the back of the bus. There was a time when our culture deemed it okay to pay women women a fraction of what men were paid. What the majority thinks is okay isn't always what's moral.
I don't want to be a part of any culture or society in which the authorities are openly allowed to break the rules they set down and are praised for doing so, because that's exactly what's going on here. Valheita I think there's a connection you're making which shouldn't be made. Mocking a belief, is not mocking a person. I mock almost everything, but that doesn't mean I don't have respect for people. If you mock everything, then everything is equal. If you only mock some things and not other things, you're declaring that some things are better than others. I'm not sure I fully understand what you're trying to make. Beliefs and the people who hold them are not completely independent of each other. Remember that there wouldn't be a belief if there weren't people creating and propagating it. The belief isn't being separated from the people who follow it. When you're mocking what someone is saying ("The rapture is coming"), you're mocking that person. Can someone please remind me why I'm defending myself in a thread that's designed for secret sharing and getting things off one's chest?

It seems like you think we're attacking you but we're not. Well, I'm not and Val probably isn't, either.
-shrugs- Yeah I said some things I probably shouldn't have the last post and I'm sorry for that.
But still, I just think the whole "make fun of everything or nothing at all" mentality.. I just don't agree with it and it bothers me. I guess that's why I was saying what I was.
Anyway, no more posting about this from me. I really shouldn't come back here anymore, I quit this guild a long time ago. xP

Kamok0 @Cleo - heh sorry the charlie sheen thing, In all honesty, he wanted the publicity, he made a fortune and his popular went up from the internet stunts heh the raptor thing, I guess I don't see it as bad I kind of see it as "O h hey if the world is going to end instead of being all morbid and depressed, lets try cheer up and keep everyone happy with some kicks and giggles" heh =/ @thread - I'm tired & need a place to hide in I've heard that cardboard boxes labeled" oranges" are exceptionally well-suited to this task. I could use one myself
