I feel like I'm losing myself. The things I loved to do are no longer quite as interesting anymore. Not knitting, not the Net. Not even reading fully captures my attention like it used to. There have been a number of times where I've caught myself looking out the back door, just staring at the yard. I don't wish to become some apathetic mess, but I don't know what to do.

Foam-Dome CleoSombra I am ashamed of Gaia. I'm really considering leaving. Hm? What'd they do this time? It's this Raptor Jesus thing. It's similar to how I felt with the Charlie Sheen thing, but I told myself it would just be a one time thing. Gaia wouldn't do it again. They did. This isn't about Christianity or religion. It's about making fun of people's beliefs. Like "LOL, there are people that are so crazy that they think the world is going to end! ROFL!" It's not . . . funny. People being with their families, eating what they feel is going to be their last meal . . . that's not funny. It's not something to make fun of. People quitting their jobs, giving away their money and their house . . . that's not funny. The belief might be ridiculous, but it's not something to mock. It just strips people of their dignity. It's belittling. It's disgusting. At least with Southpark and Family Guy and shows like that, they mock anything and everything. But with Gaia, it's not like that. Gaia will ban you for trolling and making fun of others. I got a warning for saying "they're being dicks," 'they' being an anonymous group of people. If someone went around posting a picture of a Raptor Jesus in a Religion/Morality thread, they'd be warned for spamming and for trolling. For posting material meant to annoy, bother, or irritate people. Why is it that Gaia doesn't have any religious symbols - no images of Christ, or Buddha, no star of David or Pillars of Faith, but it's perfectly find to post memes mocking what beliefs they prescribe as being silly? If we're going to mock anyone who believes in the Rapture, then why not mock anyone who believes in Jesus or Buddha or God? These beliefs can all be seen as irrational or crazy or strange. By making fun of some and not others, you're saying that some are stupid and others are not. Some are worth showing dignity and respect to, others are not. Apparently, people who believed that they were going to leave this earth yesterday are not worth showing respect to.

Admittedly, the hypocrisy of their actions is a rather valid point to address. I would actually be quite interested in hearing how they would defend themselves against the argument you presented. My guess is that they'll try to justify their actions by saying that the whole Rapture business was only taken seriously by a significant minority of the Christian religion or something.

Some users in SF (one in particular) made the argument that it wasn't mockery - it was "light fun." Yeah. Sounds exactly like what a bully on the playground would say. "I wasn't picking on him! We were just playing!" rolleyes Ooh, here's an argument: You're not allowed to say Gaia is being mean if you've ever been mean yourself. Brilliant argument to stop people from reporting trolling and flaming, too! =D

If you truly feel that way Cleo, then it's up to you to decide whether you stay or go.
I would just like to propose that you are perhaps seeing the issue as larger than it is as a result of your confrontations within Site Feedback, and so would suggest you take a few days away to think about it before making any final decisions.

Was I the only one who associated this "Raptor is coming!" to a meme called "Raptor Awareness Day"? Raptor Jesus has been a meme for a very long while now. Gaia didn't make it up. It's just another internet meme, which can be a little sensitive, yes. But a lot of memes similar to that one are sensitive. Those people that they 'make fun of', I don't really see it that way. It's all in good fun. But I guess one bad egg ruins everyone else's fun. Though, Gaia can't do much anything without being seen as bashing religion. I mean, the last cirque rig? There was sooo much drama over the pentagram being upsidedown and "satanist" when you know all too well they didn't mean anything remotely similar to that. And you know, Cleo, Christianity is mainstream. Everyone knows that it exists, pretty much. I'm sure there are people on Gaia that don't know what Buddhism is or other religions are. Even the non-religious people know enough about Christianity to recognize it. I guess that's why everyone associates /anything/ religious found on Gaia to Christianity, when it could easily be blanketed over several religions. Just saying.

Why do I do this to myself? Oh, right... That's why... redface heart

CleoSombra Apparently, people who believed that they were going to leave this earth yesterday are not worth showing respect to. M'thinks that depends on what exactly one needs to deserve respect. Say what you will, but some people need to be stripped of their false dignity, if not for anything but the revelation factor. If you ne'er do find out that something's ridiculous, there's no cause to stop it. If a Pheonix looks like hell, it has to burn to reattain it's true luster.

Kuro, two things: Gaia is not the internet. On the internet, you can post porn. You can insult people. You can make fun of people. You can post shock and gore. You cannot do these things on Gaia. Secondly, this isn't about religion. This isn't about Christianity. This is about making fun of people and mocking their beliefs as stupid and silly. This is not unlike what Gaia did with Charlie Sheen and mental illness.

It has nothing to do with Charlie Sheen. It could have been any person under the sun that went through this. Mocking someone for saying "crazy" things isn't funny. People do associate what he's been doing with mental illness.

It's not something to be earned. People deserve respect, enough if their beliefs aren't those of the majority.

@ Cleo, I'm not sure what to think of this issue. Personally, I think it's a little pathetic and childish. Since it is essentially poking fun at someone who cannot fight back, maybe it is a little joke but it's not really necessary. But I can see that Gaia was just following the trend of the moment, pretty much every place you look is taking the piss out of the people that believed the rapture was going to happen yesterday. I mean, they attempted to predict something there own holy books says they cannot: Matthew 24:30-36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Yes, it's still not right to mock them for it. But that's what people do. People are cruel and will mock others for any perceived indiscretion on their part even if it is the slightest of non-conformity. That's humanity for you.
