Terryn stuck her tongue out. "I shall have you know, sir, that I went through four years of finishing school." She lowered her voice. "Load of good that did."
"Oh...you're here." She turned to her husband, wiping off her cheek where the duchess had kissed her. "Have you two been sporting behind my back?"
The earl chuckled. "Darling, I am hardly young enough to sport anymore." He kissed her awkwardly on the cheek and led her inside. "Actually, it is my daughter that has been the one sporting."
"Really now? With whom?" Serina looked at the duchess. "One of yours?"

Marcus nodded. "Yes, well, with your elegant demeanor, pleasant voice, and willingness to conform, I can certainly see the finishing school graduate shining through."
The Duchess actually winced at the mention of the term 'sporting.' Good Lord. "Yes, actually. Marcus. My oldest."

"Of course!" Terryn spoke loudly on purpose, trying to imitate the shriek of her cousin in law. "Of course, darling Evelyn graduated first in our class. A real noblewoman tha tone."
"Marcus?" Serina snorted. "Isn't he the one with fifteen b*****d kids or something? Arvy, I know I told you I wanted her out of the house, but good lord. I guess she wasn't the stuck up little p***k I thought she was if she'll go for that type of man."

The Duchess swallowed. "They're quite smitten with one another."

"Yes..." Terryn sighed dramatically. "I fear she outshines the rest of us with her beauty and poise. Have you ever seen anyone drool more regally?"
Serina scoffed. "Sure." She yawned, leaning on her husband. "I'm going to go take a nap. Wake me for dinner." She took off for the bedroom, her eyes half closed.
"Of course." The earl waved her off with a small smile. "That went better than I expected."

The Duchess looked revolted, and she couldn't quite hide her expression. "Do you really mean that?"

"What?" The earl looked very confused. "I expected she would make Terryn move out immediately."

Marcus looked solemn. "You have every right to. I'd leave you in a second if I had a chance with a girl like her."
The Duchess swallowed. Really, it wasn't any of her business. "Oh. Well. Yes, that was nice of her."

"But did you not just have your chance yesterday?" Terryn raised an eyebrow inquisitively and leaned over the table. "Or did she reject you?"
Lord Arvin nodded, but sighed as he looked at the expression on his friend's face. "You do not much like her, do you?"

Marcus leaned over the table as though he was going to spill some dark secret. "Well, not rejected, precisely. She fell asleep when I attempted to seduce her."
The Duchess sighed and looked away uncomfortably. "Not much, I'm afraid. But, really, what concern is it of mine?"

"You are that boring then?" Terryn placed her hand on the table, drumming her fingers. "Perhaps you are not worth my time."
"Oh, come now. You know I have always held you in high esteem." He placed his hand on her shoulders. "Now, what is wrong with her?"

Everything. "Er...nothing I can put my finger on," answered the Duchess, very discomfited.

The earl sighed. "Terryn says she is evil...I do not see it." He dropped his arms to the side and reclined into his chair again.

"Well, she certainly does keep an eye on your properties," answered the Duchess tartly, immediately regretting her decision to open her mouth. "That is to say..."

Terryn nodded sadly. "It is the way of the world, I am afraid." She leaned over the table and gave him a quick kiss before she started eating. "If only you had his table manners."
The earl looked up at her, somewhat inquisitively. "So you do agree with my daughter..." He sighed, exasperated. "But what can I do about it? I am not Anglican, I can not exactly divorce her."
