So far I've got a 'bookkeeper' with organizer, record keeper, judge of intent, and appraiser. I've got a 'lunchlady' with brewer, cook, and butcher. I need to make a hunter with marksdwarf and animal cleaning skills. Obviously a miner. I should get a mason... with engraving and building designing? Buildings in this game are furniture, right? Should the carpenter have that?

I have a huntsman, lunchlady, minedwarf, woodworker, stoneworker, serf, and bookkeeper. My minedwarf has 5 points left. I can't buy more mining with them. Perhaps I should make him mine in heavy armor. =D

The Last Pedigree

I've got one dolphin, doing flips and s**t, One T-pain, and one Andy Samberg. The last two are on a boat.

Oh, for starting build? Better off with fisher/fishcleaner than hunter. Since you kill all the available animals immediately and need a ready butcher to turn them into cookable meat before it rots.

I usually give my 5 miner guy some wrestling skills.

Cook has butchery skills. Thought that'd cover it. TOO LATE NOW FEN. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE BECAUSE OF YOU.

Hey, man, I didn't cause the magma/demons/elephants/unicorns/insanity/possession/goblin invasion.

You're just projecting.

I think I'm too grand for my britches starting out. My miner carved a grand entrance hall into the side of a mountain, which is now being engraved and smoothed and paved. I have no beds yet.

Sounds like you're doing just fine to me.

What is he engraving?

First thing I dig out is a small storage room and have all the food hauled there from the wagon so it doesn't get eaten or stolen by wild animals. Later I put some stairs down a level and create a basement warehouse for all kinds of s**t.

You need a carpenter's workshop soon before your dwarves have to sleep on the ground too much.

Well, let me tell you what I've done since starting.

I checked out the area and found a canyon-like low area facing the river that I'm using as my entrance. The minedwarf dug a 10-ish square long tunnel 2 spaces wide into this and then dug out a large antechamber which my mason is now smoothing to kill time. From there I put a 2-wide down staircase across from the entrance hallway and made a 2-wide hallway one level lower.

Off of this I built a 5x5 room (which will be a kitchen) connected to a 5x5 room (which will be a storage room) and a side tunnel going around behind both that connects to the storage room for when I decide to deny entry to the kitchen for anyone who isn't the chef. I'm doing the same thing across the hallway, building several 5x5 craft rooms which will have 5x5 storage rooms behind them, connected to a single hallway that runs to each storage room for haulers to dump things while the crafting area can be limited to the guy I want doing his work. (note: locking him in is something I saw Stoove doing earlier, don't know how to do it yet)

Beyond that I plan to carve out some bedrooms.

How do I put up a wall where I mined something out so I can reshape a room?

I tunneled into the side of a hill. Left a spot open for a trade depot near the surface so caravans could get there easy and I don't have to deal with assholes marching through my fort.

Put some farmland out to the left so it's just down the hall from storage, since it was mostly soil.

The small starter storage room to start with, and a staircase down into the warehouse. The workshops across the hall from that with the basics to keep my starting 7 busy while being right next to materials.

Expanded to the left with the secondary workshop with more space for more production and more advanced crap.

Further down is the butcher's workshop. Leatherworker and tanner shops, and a kennel. I plan to tie cattle to the wall to be nearby and prevent them from being adopted as pets.

Metalworks off to the left. Big open area for smelted bars to be stacked.

Lots of stairs down to the warehouse so none of the shops are far from materials.

Dormitories. Barracks off to the left.

More dorms. The grand dining hall.

My room is the big one with statues and an attached office. Because I'm awesome.

Make sure you choose the right material. I wasted a lot of wood before when I was in a hurry.
