Her glance slid across the room. It was dainty, petite, as she was. She liked small things and liked being small in general. There was futon layed in the far corner and a small bag containing her personal belongings next to it. She recognized it, but her gaze drifted around the rest of the rooms. There were no face-paints or luxourius hair ornaments; Only feather dusters and brooms. Dissapointment welled in her like rain wells in a cloud.

Amaya refused to get her hopes high about having a room to herself. She didn't know how things worked around here. So instead of wondering about that she went over to the bag next to the futon. Beneath it folded traditionally was the most valuable thing she owned. Her mother's kimono. Made from beautiful green silk with coveted designs, it was worth more than Amaya's life. She lifted the bag off of it and opened it. Inside was the 20 yen that had been left in her home after her parents passed away, a book she took with her everywhere for reading, and her most precious posession; Her book of poetry. She had been writing since she was eleven and she was fourteen now. Her inner-most thoughts were inside of this book, she valued it above all else. It may not have been worth money, but who could not place importance upon their soul?

A smile teased the edge of her mouth. She had such fond memories of home, but now they fell away like her words. They ment nothing, everytime she thought about them they fell away into darkness. Her father worked in a market selling fish and squid and her mother in a tea house. Amaya stayed at home, and because they hadn't the money to give her lessons, she taught herself how read and write. It was a slow process, but worth it in the end. She pulled herself out of reverie and shook the tears from her eyes. She did not have time for this, she needed to find someone to tell her about the duties she would be handling.

She stood and let the bag fall to the floor. To her suprise it landed with a loud "Clank". She bent down to retrieve it and found something unexpected inside. It was a necklace She had thought lost; of the the moon smiling to a star. Her first love Niko had given it to her as a gift on her last birthday. She dropped it in the meadow behind her home once and never found it again. It had a note attached to it, so quitely she read;

Dear Amaya,
I'm sorry for your loss,
but more apologetic for losing you.
You lost this long ago and the day
before you left home I searched for it
well into the night.
I knew you had been horribley troubled
by not having it, though I don't understand why.
I have returned it to you not as birthday gift;
but as a gift toward your dream of becoming
Geisha.
I will wish upon the stars everynight, for all of your
dreams to come true.
Goodbye my love, but remember, you will forever be,
My beautiful sunflower dancing in the night rain.

There really were tears in her eyes now. She fell to her knees and wept. She was terribly homesick and terribly, alone.

Amaya finally got a grip on herself after an hour of weeping. She felt so out of place and secluded. Her heart ached with the thought of home, and her eyes burned at the thought of love. Amaya dried her eyes and rose from where she'd been weeping. She found a wash basin in the corner, and let her hands sink into it. She continued, washing her face and letting down her hair. Lovely black strands billowed out behind her, as exquisite as silk and fell gently to her lower back. Her hand sought a brush that was set beside the basin and began to work out the knots. After, she worked her hair into four perfect braids, and then weaved them together to sit in a bun on top of her head.

After her hair was place atop her head, she fell to her knees in prayer. What she was asking remained unsure, even to herself. Whether her plea was for survival or for beauty, she did not know. Her heart just found itself no longer able to bear the lonliness. It was like poisen spreading through her body making her veins dance like snakes; injecting venom into her essence. She rose, thinking herself foolish and then walked to the door; opened it and stepped out, closing it behind her. The halls were still deserted when she found herself needing company most.

"Hello." she called softly into the silence, listening to her words echo and then fall away. She wondered where everyone had got to. The okiya mother should be around here somewhere, but she hadn't the faintest Idea where to look for her. "Hello." her voice rang out again, but no response met her call. So she walked, not sure where her feet were taking her.

Serena heard the small hello and walked in the direction she heard it from. There she saw one of the young maids.
"Hello there,"Serena gretted sweetly.

Suddenly Amaya felt tense and shy. She bowed to the beautiful woman and dared not lift her gaze from the ground.

"I am sorry to bother you miss," She began, hoping that she wasn't doing anything out of order or agaisnt the rules. "But I haven't the fainest idea what I am to do."

She felt herself flush with foolishness.

Amaya gave a deep bow to this information. The fact that she was speaking to the head geisha amazed her deeply.

"I am situated, Miss, but I haven't anything to do. I would be glad to complete any task you wish." Amaya said quietly.

Her gaze still had not left the ground, she was afraid to look at such a ravishing women. She thought if she did, her mind would get lost in the beauty forever.
