~<?>~ Shen ~<?>~

Licking his lips the elven assassin looked down at the mess of people in the room below, perched on a steel beam in the ceiling, already planning the multiple ways in which he could and would most likely kill each and every one of them. ‘Now then, a room full of important looking people, all armed and no sign of Mr Muscle…Perhaps’ He pondered as he scanned the area, moving silently from beam to beam before finally setting his sights on an oddly new looking door.
Well there’s the big shinning welcome sign, and our fabulous host should be“. Teleporting outside said door he slipped inside unnoticed. “What the ‘ell are you doin ‘ere?!” A voice with a tone similar to that of a fog-horn draws his attention.
The pictures did not do this man justice, he was not just a giant of a man, he was a mountain, muscles covered his body in places Shen was pretty sure muscles should not be and in sizes that made you question how he was walking so casually.
Talking of walking, the guy was heading straight for him, fist back and preparing to punch.

Rodger looked to Jarod as he stirred the almost melted butter into a cooking pot with the thawed green beans.

“Almost!” he answered the boy’s impatient question. “Slow and steady usually satisfies the taste buds better,” he added in agreement as Loki spoke.

Rodger turned back to the task at hand, glancing to Loki as the girl left the kitchen. The timer on the oven reached zero, and a warning beep sounded.

Turning the timer off, Rodger let the spoon rest in the pot and placed his hand on the handle of the oven to open it. He jumped as the sound of a muffled foghorn rang through his pocket, and, with a relieved sigh, pulled an iPhone from his back pocket, and opened the oven.

“Jarod,” Rodger looked to the boy, “grab me a hot pad, please. They’re in the drawer on the end.” Rodger nodded to a drawer near the opposite end of the kitchen, then unlocked his phone to check the message from Vanessa waiting for him.

The message read, “Rodg, something came up. B back l8er. Is Karinda there?”

Karinda’s head twitched in Loki’s direction as the gentle sound of footsteps padded across the carpet. Saiirin raised her head to look at the newcomer, snorted, then glided down to the floor at Karinda’s feet.

“Hello,” a voice said softly, forcing Karinda to turn her gaze from the window.

Her mind slowly receding from her thoughts of the how the things had once been to the happenings of the present, Karinda blinked, looking Loki over quickly.

“Raining outside, is it?” Loki continued in her soft tone. “I hope Jarod doesn’t deice he wants to go out and play. I’m going to have quite the time trying to get him to stay out of any puddles tomorrow.”

Karinda smiled. “’Tis an allure for children that hath survived many a century. Rejoice knowing thy town’s streets are made not of dirt!”

Jarod also jumped at the sound of Rodger's phone, and realizing Rodger had done the same made him grin. He watched curiously as Rodger pulled the phone out of his pocket.

"Yes, sir!" Jarod stood up straight, saluted Rodger and scurried over to the indicated drawer. He pulled out the requested item, smiled, then hesitated for a moment and frowned. Jarod glanced quickly from the hot pad to Rodger and back, then hurried back and held it up for Rodger to take.

"Is this one big enough?" he asked.

Loki looked briefly at Saiirin as she moved to the ground and gave her a friendly nod, still trying to at least start off on good terms with her. Her previous few experiences with dragons had gone pretty well. Why not try to keep it up?

It took Loki a bit to respond to Karinda's statements, and she passively wondered again where Karinda and Saiirin could be from. Her accent wasn't entirely familiar to Loki, and her sentences were a bit... different.

"That is a good point," she agreed, chuckling. "Then there would be mud as well as water everywhere he went."

"I think Rodger and Jarod are almost done with dinner. I hope you like chicken," Loki continued, looking into the kitchen. Thankfully it looked like Jarod was still being somewhat helpful.

"I thought I wasn't hungry, but... now I think I've changed my mind." She watched the two "chefs" interact.

Rodger smiled at Jarod’s salute. “At ease, soldier!”

Rodger put his phone back in his pocket, text unanswered, as Jarod returned with the hot pad.

“That’s perfect!” He took the hot pad and slipped it on his hand. He curled his fingers as if waving at no one in particular, then took out the metal pan with eight pieces of chicken breasts and set it on the stovetop beside the green bean pan.

The mouthwatering scent of the cooked meat strengthened, filling the air of the kitchen and wafting through the library apartment.

Removing the hot pad and placing it on the counter beside the stove, Rodger opened a cabinet filled with ceramic bowls and plates organized by size.

“Let’s see,” he muttered to himself, using his fingers to count as he continued, “there’s you, me, your mom, Noki, Karinda, and Saiirin.” He pulled five dinner plates and one large bowl from the cabinet and set them on the counter atop each other. Opening a drawer and taking out four forks and placing them in the bowl, their handles sticking out, he looked back to Jarod. “Think you could set the table, or would the plates be too heavy? Dining room’s the next room over.” He gestured to the wall in front of him, indicating the room beyond.

Saiirin’s eyes narrowed at Loki as the girl smiled at her.

Hath stones been laid upon her tongue? Saiirin asked Karinda with a snort at Loki’s delay in answer. Words reveal themselves to the court fool with more speed!

Karinda glared down at Saiirin before looking back to Loki as she spoke.

“Aye, chicken is indeed a master at enticing taste buds, so long as it has been fully plucked!” Karinda answered with a grin as Saiirin lifted her nose and sniffed at the air, the scent of the food making both their stomach’s growl. “Pray tell; is this the town thou callest home, or is it naught but a single road within the path of thy life?”

((Sprinkling. "Her gaze shifted to the large window, a couple drops of rain splashing against the windowpane." Earlier, I gave the "newscast," which usually give rough estimates. The last time update is on the lower half of the previous page, which stated it as being 5:30. The events that take place between the game's then and now do not seem deserving of half an hour, hence roughly 5:45ish, which is still about dinner time for many people.))

"Mmmmm..." Jarod thought of the glass he had broken earlier that day and frowned.

"I think I can do it. If I take a few at a time." He ran over to look into the dining room, then scampered back and started by slowly lifting the bowl off of the dinner plates, then holding it close to himself with both arms.

"I'm sorry I broke your water glass today, Rodger," he said quietly. He started towards the dining room, making sure to look where he was walking. He would do the best he could, especially since Rodger seemed to trust him with the dishes.

Loki watched the interaction between Karinda and Saiirin curiously. She shook her head. "Oh no, Jarod and I have only been here for a couple of days. We... the longest he and I have ever stayed in one place was a few months. Although, now that we've found a group of people who aren't only... well, human... I think we'll try to stick around and be useful. Find a niche, maybe. Be part of a cause." Loki noticed Jarod walking out of the kitchen with a large bowl in his arms, and she smiled.

"I think it'll be good for him. He's been looking forward to it his entire life."

"I'll be right back. Looks like he needs a little help," she said, looking to Karinda and Saiirin again.

"Hey," she placed her hand on Jarod's head. "Mind if I help out?"

Jarod smiled back and nodded. "Please do. I'm setting the table."

"Alright," Loki chuckled. "I'll go get the rest of those plates for you. Be right behind you."

"Thank you." Jarod glanced at Karinda and Saiirin before continuing to the dining room, still at a careful pace.

Loki watched Jarod go. She lingered for a moment before entering the kitchen and greeting Rodger. She walked up to him.

"I'm sorry I left suddenly. Karinda was looking a bit... down." She looked up at him and smiled. "Um... I've offered to help Jarod with the plates. Would you like for me to do anything else in here before I follow him out?"

Rodger reached into a cabinet below the counter and pulled out a tray as the boy apologized for breaking the glass.

“Don’t worry about it,” he said, glancing to Jarod. “I’ve broken my share of dishes.” He grinned. Placing the pan on the counter, he used a spatula to scoop up the chicken and place it on the platter.

Karinda smiled knowingly as Loki explained her living situation. “’Tis a satisfying feeling, being amongst those joined for a similar cause.” She looked to Jarod as Loki’s attention turned to her son.

Karinda nodded as Loki left to aid Jarod. Acknowledging Jarod’s glance with another nod, she looked to Saiirin before following Jarod into the dining room, the light switching on automatically as they boy entered. Saiirin hopped onto Karinda’s back, the dragon’s claws gently scratching the girl’s back through her red and black hoodie as Saiirin climbed to her shoulder, the dragon’s body shrinking to better fit on her new perch.

The artificial light glittered from a small chandelier hanging above the center of an oak table. The table took up most of the space, leaving just enough room for a body to pass behind an occupied chair. Eight matching chairs with elaborately carved backs sat around the table, three on the sides and one at each end.

Two taper candles flanked the center of the table, the wax ends resting in holders created by gold and bronze leaves.

Saiirin flew to the back of one of the chairs, her front claws clinging to the top and her hind feet finding hold within the network of vines. Her tail swished behind her, its tip pointed toward the floor.

“’Twas kind for thou to offer thy aid, lad,” Karinda said to Jarod with a small smile.

Noticing two red taper candles flanking the center of the table, their ends in holders created by gold and bronze leaves, she waived her hand in their direction. A flame flickered to life on the candle closest to her and spread to the second, the warm firelight fighting against the artificial light of the chandelier.

Karinda looked back to Jarod as Saiirin pulled herself up onto the ledge of the chair’s back. “Allow me to offer thee mine, if the need stands present.”

Rodger looked from the pan of green beans as he transferred them to a bowl.

“Ah. Very thoughtful.” He smiled at Loki and placed the pot in the sink as she continued.

“Well,” he said pulling out a few glasses from a cabinet, “would you mind finding out what everyone wants to drink? We have milk, soda, juice, and water.”

((I also apologize as well for not replying sooner! Egypt? AWESOME! How was that? May I ask what brought you there – business or pleasure?

((I'm so sorry for the delay! It was NOT my choice, I swear! >o< I've decided I'm going to start going to the public library at least once a week so my online activities remain unaffected by internet issues at home (most likely Wednesdays or possibly weekends). It's getting pretty frustrating.I've only got wifi again for a bit today, so I'm sorry if this post isn't the greatest. sweatdrop ))

Jarod placed the bowl on the edge of the table. As he pushed it as far towards the center as he could, he noticed Saiirin landing on a chair nearby. He smiled and admired the dragon, then realized Karinda had also entered the room after him.

“’Twas kind for thou to offer thy aid, lad,”

Jarod frowned, then turned so he was facing Karinda, his head tilted slightly to the left. His smile returned after a moment, and his head returned to an upright position.

"I like to help. Plus, everyone here is being really nice to me and my mom." His stomach growled, and he giggled, placing his hands on his belly.

"Sorry. I-" He stopped suddenly, his eyes growing wide as Karinda lit the candles in front of him.

"You... you can... make fire?" He looked to and from Karinda and the candles repeatedly, an enormous grin slowly taking over his face. He could feel his heart joining him in his excitement.

"I can- I have to show you! " He noticed the bowl on the table, and remembered that he still had a job to do.

"Um..." He looked from the bowl to Karinda, then hurried towards the kitchen, only to stop at the doorway and rush back. He stood grinning in front of Karinda and took a deep breath. He could almost hear his mom asking him to calm down first.

"Actually... can you help me set the table please?" He was practically bouncing in his shoes.

"I wanna show you what I can do too, but I told Rodger I would set the table, so I have to finish that first, but maybe if you help me we can finish sooner and I can show you too! And also..." He held his hands behind his back and looked down at his shoes.

"Well, I'm scared I might drop the plates and break them."

"Yes sir!" Loki gave Rodger a small salute reminiscent of her son's.

"By the way... I wanted to say that I'm grateful you're so kind to Jarod," she said, giving Rodger a slow thankful nod.

"I was afraid he would be lonely now that he may not have the company of others his age every now and then. But now I think he'll be alright. He seems comfortable with most everyone so far, and... well, I'm not sure if you've noticed, but you're quickly becoming one of his favorite people. Again, thank you."

"Now... "Loki saluted once more.

"I'm off to follow through with your request, sir!" She laughed and walked out to the dining room.
PostPosted: Sat Feb 08, 2014 9:47 pm

”No thanks required.” Rodger smiled at Loki, the expression widening as he shook his head as she stated him to be on the verge of becoming one of Jarod’s “favorite people.” “I’ll take that as a compliment! He’s a good kid. You’ve raised him well.”

Rodger laughed as Loki saluted him a second time. “So that’s where he got that!” he exclaimed as he took the plate with the chicken in one hand and the bowl of green beans in the other. Holding both of them high, he followed Loki out.

Karinda looked to the boy and Saiirin snorted as he stated the observation of her power.

“Aye, my boy,” she said, a small smile quirking at the corner of her mouth as she took in Jarod’s grin and the excitement glittering in his eyes.

”I can—I have to show you!”

“Show me?” Karinda looked at him sideways. She looked to the bowl to which Jarod glanced, before turning her attention back to the boy as he hurried out of the room.

He is a strange child, Saiirin thought to Karinda, looking after Jarod through narrowed eyes.

'Tis naught but what one can expect of one of such an age, Karinda replied with amusement. She turned toward the table, only to turn back around again as the gentle sound of Jarod’s footsteps suddenly returned.

Karinda smiled and stepped forward as the boy spoke, and Jarod donned the posture of an ashamed child.

“It takes great courage indeed for one to admit a fear and seek the assistance of another.” Karinda patted Jarod’s shoulder. “Come. Together we shall, as thou so formed the words, ‘set the table.’”

Await my return here, Saiirin, Karinda requested silently as she left the dining room and headed toward the kitchen.

Saiirin snorted and hopped onto the table. Nuzzling the chair further from the table, she slipped between the gap and curled up on the cushion of the seat.

In the living room, Karinda stepped aside as Loki and Rodger rounded the corner from the kitchen. Eyeing the plate Rodger held, she offered a small bow.

“’Tis the smell of food worthy for the divine, Rodger!” She longingly eyed the platter with chicken breasts sitting atop it as he passed, her stomach growling at the strengthened scent of the spiced chicken.

Rodger chuckled. “Thanks to Jarod there.” He nodded to Jarod. “Without his help, mud with a sprinkle of rosemary would’ve been better!”

Karinda returned his grin with a small smile and, with a nod, continued to the kitchen.

She paused just inside the doorway, her eyes widening for a second as she took in the stainless steel appliances. Her gaze fell to the five plates and four cups on the counter, and she stepped toward them. Taking one in hand, she examined its glossy white surface and tapped its ceramic edge with one of her nails, the action making a gentle clinking sound.

“If it rests well with thee, young master cook,” Karinda began, looking to Jarod as she stacked another plate atop the first in her hand, “wouldest thou care to take two?” She handed the two plates to Jarod. “Or perhaps thy strength is great enough for more than thy mind hath fooled thee to believe?”

((No worries! Thanks for letting me know why you have been absent. Sorry you have been having difficulties with your internet. I hope you get that figured out! Oh, and did I interpret the “ashamed” posture correctly? I wanted to make sure.))
