Tres pretty much covered my response to your follow-up.
I do agree with what you mentioned about roleplaying. Well put.
It's just that these tournaments fall in this weird gap between a competition (fighting) and cooperation (RP).
If you're looking at either aspect purely, that changes what is or is not acceptable.
From a pure RP standpoint, it makes sense for your character to avoid close engagements as much as possible, even stumbling over himself to maintain distance. From a purely competitive standpoint, it also makes sense (and it would be arguably easy) to maintain the same optimal distance as a sword user.
But as Tres points out, that's where things break down in this weird hybrid that is a tournament RP. And it's all taken from experience being in these tournaments of what tends to work best. Not that it's the best solution, right, or wrong. But we know the alternative extremes don't necessarily work, at least for a wider appeal.
So to use a meme, if you go into these tournaments for pure sport (competition) or pure story (RP), you're gonna have a bad time.
Besides all that, I did like your own solution, to bash 'em with the pommel. Simple and stylish, and not what a lot of opponents would expect from a sword user. I think that's a very good counter for these kinds of tournaments.
But that and all my preceding comments are purely my opinion from my own experiences.
Edit: Wow I don't even have to separately reply to Sigil. That was just entirely too convenient!
