She smiled gently as she listened to him, then nodded her head. "Yeah.. my father couldn't see Cira, which was both a relief and a bother at the same time. He's not from Gaia and.. seeing him again was quite the accident, but that would take a long time to explain." She noticed, then, the quick change in subject and let it go, not wanting to make him uncomfortable. "Yeah, sunlight Wethkin. She keeps me awake at night I swear. The first night I found her egg, it was so bright I thought it was morning when I woke up, but it was only three AM. She's learning how to tone it down a bit, but she still has a tendency to lose control when she's asleep. Understandable, of course."**************** Xennik was grateful that the subject had passed. He allowed himself to relax.
"I couldn't see Regen, at first." He paused, not sure why he had brought this up. Again, he changed the subject. "Regen tends to get people wet a lot. Most of them don't know what just happened. It's kind of funny, actually."
Regen, hearing her name, fluttered over to her guardian and settled on his shoulder, snuggled up against his neck in a way that would have made most people giggle and squirm, but, as Xennik's nerves were paralyzed on that half of his body, he didn't feel it at all. **************** She could feel the tension that was previously there start to fade away, and she herself relaxed as well. A she watched Regen cuddle up to Xennik, Cira as well came and curled up in her lap, cooing happily.
"Well, it certainly seems that she has found someone perfect for her. I'm glad that so many of the other guardians are caring, I was worried that some of the Wethkins might be found by people who just didn't care." ***************** Xennik had to squint slightly to see Auri's face through the light of the glowing sunshine Wethkin. He didn't mind, much. The light made her look dramatic.
He was thoughtfully silent at her comment of caring guardians. "I've only met two other guardians. Regen gets a little bored in my world." he chuckled. One of these days, I need to send her to Wethkin headquarters. I couldn't go myself, of course, or a few doctors and newsreporters would have heart attacks, but...it's be nice to leave every now and then."****************** She chuckled lightly as she nodded her head, fingers lightly caressing the top of Cira's little puff head. "Well, maybe I could come up with a way to break you out for a bit. You could come hang out at my house, have some tea and get out in the sun and such. And we could go to the headquarters together, I haven't taken Cira there since.. well.. since I had to disappear for a bit."

Xennik laughed. He couldn't help it. The idea was so innocently absurd! His doctors would never let him leave. He was their income! Without him and the popularity the clinic gained by the public's interest in his physical and mental health, the clinic would probably shut down. They allowed him to be interveiwed and photographed almost once a month, then never bothered to show him why. Kenric, or a friendly patient, often snuck the magazines and newspapers to him, so he could see how some poor, misguided writer was taking his life and pulling it completely out of proportion.
"If only." He sighed.
Regen, growing bored, decided to entertain herself by blowing bubbles. She made a gurgling sound, and soon several tiny, multi-colored bubbles were floating in the air beside Xennik's head. ************** Auri chuckled lightly as she watched Regen, but Xennik could probably tell that she was deeply lost in thought over how to get Xennik out, it was obvious now that he was extremely unhappy here, and she hated seeing people like that. She couldn't fly him out, or any such thing, after all she was only a normal birds' size when she shifted. But what if she could enlist the help of other birds..
"Hey, how do you think the people in here would react if hundreds of birds suddenly flew into the center?" She asked seriously, her eyes bright with an idea. *************** Xennik didn't even realize that she was serious. Obviously being sarcastic, he replied. "Oh, no. Hundreds of birds are quite, quite common." He laughed a little, but it became more and more uncomfortable as he noticed her serious expression.
"I...You're not kidding, are you?" **************** A slight smirk began to form over her face as she chuckled and shook her head. "I'm serious. I could gather up a legion of birds to come in here and just cause havoc, and we could sneak you out in the process." She nodded to herself, fingers lifting to tap her lips as she contemplated this. "It could work.."***************** "You're kidding." Xennik scoffed. The thought was outrageous! They'd never let him go. And if he got away... They'd penalize him, for sure. He didn't know how, but he knew they would. But to be able to leave... Even for I few precious moments, would be like a dream. He was so sick and tired of the Clinic, he surprised himself. He was willing to break the rules, trust a girl he hadn't known even that morning, risk being penalized, just to leave for a few tiny moments.
For Regen. Regen had never seen the outside world. She was a part of itm from it, she should know what it was like. She couldn't be trapped forever in this thrice-accursed Clinic where no one exactly got worse, but no one got better, either. She couldn't be trapped all her life, like him.
No. He wasn't trapped. He was just feeling restless. That was all. Must have been the new medication. Yes, just the medication. Sure, he'd never known anyone who had been cured in this place, but the people he knew consisted of doctors, therapists, cooks, and the elderly lady down the hall and her granddaughter. That wasn't many people at all. Besides, the grandmother was beyond help. Even she knew it.
It was a slow process, but he would get better. Someday, he would be well. Not healed, exactly, but well. And they would let him go. He and Regen would go out into the world...
He shuddered. The thought of going out, and being alone, was a whole different concept. Completely. He needed the Clinic. This was where he was supposed to be. Right here.
Xennik wasn't very good at hiding emotion, not anymore. His face reflected his thoughts as if he had been writing them across it. He tried to speak, but the words came out broken and muffled. Finally, he looked down at his bed, where Regen now played in his sheets, getting them all wet in the process, and whispered, "No."

Auri watched him patiently, watched the emotions play across his face like a very descriptive play, and then followed his eyes down to Regen as she contemplated how to respond. She, personally, couldn't understand why he wouldn't jump at the chance to get out of this place, but she wasn't Xennik, and only Xennik could truely understand. Teeth descended on her lower lip as she contemplated this, chewing thoughtfully on the skin then.
Well, you couldn't solve a problem if you didn't know what the problem was, so that would be the first step, she decided.
"Why not?" It was a simple answer, though one she feared would have effects she wasn't prepared for. Part of her wondered at Xennik's stability, and whether or not he would turn angry in an instant. She didn't fear him, though. Merely wondered.
Cira moved to curl up in her lap and began to fall asleep, lulled by the talking and contemplative silence in the room. *************** Xennik's first instinct was to be angry. That was, after all, how he had gotten rid of Avenorell. But this girl...she was different. She wasn't offering to "fix him", as Aven had. She was offering him freedom.
Freedom...
He instead turned to helpless frustration. He looked hopelessly around the room, until his gaze fell on his cane. "...Be-because I can't walk!" He almost sobbed, dropping his head in his hands. *************** Her immediate instinct was to run to him and wrap her arms around him to try to comfort him, and it was obvious that she was holding herself back from that. She didn't want him to feel pitied, this was something he had to get through on his own, or he would never be satisifed. She simply looked at him, lofted one eyebrow and tilted her head to the side.
"So?" *************** Xennik's face darkened. "I can't walk." He emphasized slowly. "As in, you could call in every bird in the world and cause the biggest commotion ever known in Gaian history, and I would go nowhere. I. Can. Not. Walk." He closed his eyes for a moment. "I am handicapped, Auri. I can't leave." **************** A soft snort left her nose as she just stared at him for a moment, both eyebrows raised at his willingness to give up so easily and not even contemplating the other possibilities.
"Xennik, hun. I can find you a wheelchair, and I'll just send you crashing through all those doctors and nurses." A soft, mischevious grin crossed her face at that, but quickly became serious once more. "There are ways to get you out. Do you want to go out, Xennik? Do you want to travel through a park with Regen, playing with her? Do you want to meet other owners? Free to go where you want, do what you want, when you want? Or has your body grown so used to these four walls closed in so closely around you that you're too afraid to leave? Is that it, Xennik? Are you too afraid?" She was trying to bring out the man in him at this point, to get him to stand up and do something for himself. *************** Xennik looked as though he had been slapped across the face. He opened his mouth to retort, then seemed to lose his resolve. He slumped against the wall, his whole body seeming to crumple. He covered his face with his hand.
"Yes. I am afraid." He sighed.

Now she felt like it was the right time, and she moved to sit next to him on the bed, one hand lifting to rest gently on his shoulder. "You shouldn't be. The world out there is big, but not threatening. People live out there, everyday, happy and free. There are people who have conquered problems ten times worse then yours, just by being outside, by being content, and allowing the world to take them where it will. Be confined like this.. you'll never get better. You'll mold into what the doctors want you to be, and lose all sense of yourself. Is that what you want?"************* Xennik tensed when she touched his shoulder, but didn't pull away. He listened to her numbly.
After a moment, he pulled away from her, then turned to her and put a hand on each of her shoulders, looking her direcly in the eye. "That world is what did this to me. To go in to that world...it would be like diving into scalding lava. I can't."************** She furrowed her brows a bit, trying to understand this and not pulling away from his hands, contemplating in her head. "The world did this to you.. I am apart of that world, would that include me as well? Or Regen, who comes directly from that world? Or all your little spiritkins? Things happen to everyone, Xennik. I should know, they've happened to me. I would rather be in your position, where all that's screwed up is my physical health, then have the mental problems that I deal with every day. But I do deal with them, just as everyone deals with their problems. But the worst thing you could ever do is hide from them, lock yourself away where no one can touch you. It only makes things a thousand times worse, I can promise you that with all my heart."
It would be her last attempt to convince him, after that she would let the subject drop. More then likely she would leave him alone, but still return in a few days to see how he was doing.************* Xennik let his hands drop from her shoulders, shaking his head. He allowed Regen, who had been hovering next to him when Auri took her spot on the bed, to drop into his cupped hands.
He felt like a little kid under peer pressure, as if he was being convinced to steal from the candy store. He didn't want to, and he knew that he would get into trouble, yet he felt compelled to do it. Prove to this Auri girl that he wasn't a wimp. But, no. There was a big difference between wimpiness and full-fledged paranoia. His therapists had said so.
But still...
Regen had never been outside.
Having had fallen to desperation and not succeded, Xennik allowed himself to bubble over with a kind of hot determination. "Alright. Fine. You find a way to get us out of here, and I'll go with you." His voice was clear and determined, but it was more the determination of a kid finally giving in and trying to look brave as he approached the candy store and a sure grounding.************* Aurora nodded her head gently, her eyes seeking out every little nuance of his mood as she contemplated this. More then likely he was only agreeing because she prodded him, and she knew she needed to give him time to decide whether or not he really wanted to do this, otherwise he'd never be happy. "Alright. When you're ready, email me and we'll get you out of here. But don't email me until you're absolutely ready, alright?"
She stood, and smiled warmly before she suddenly remembered something and pulled an object out from her bag and handed it towards him.
"It's said to glow in the dark, probably not too brightly so it shouldn't keep you awake. But I thought it would be nice to bring it, if you'd like it of course." She set the flower world object down on the bed next to him and scooped Cira up in her arms. "Remember, not till you're ready." She smiled at him, nodded her head and then opened the window, climbed out, waved g'bye one last time before she suddenly became an elf owl once more, and her and Cira headed home.

Quote: Dear Diary, Well, I sure do meet interesting people since Regen came around. Today's character was an Avian Shapeshifter by the name of Aurora, Auri for short. She actually flew right onto my windowsill in the shape of an owl of some sort or other with her sunshine Wethkin, Cira. Regen and Cira got along excellently. I was somewhat surprised, but Regen seems to make friends easilly, despite being shy by Wethkin standards. She's very laid-back and empathetic. I think that must be why she makes friends so smoothly. I guess I could take a leaf out of her book. Anyway, we had an interesting conversation, Auri and I, while our Wethkin bonded. She came up with this witty, far-fetched way to get me out of the hospital. It was interesting, but absurd! I'm still laughing about it. I wonderShe gave Regen -or rather, me- a strange glowing plant-orb thing. It glows in the dark, which fascinates the Spritkin. They all cluster around it, chittering. I think they're trying to figure out what it is. Maybe I'll look it up the next time I'm allowed on a computer. -Xennik

It was the end of another long, stressful day. Xennik was in his room, getting ready for dinner. He was changing out of his flexible muscle shirt and into a warmer button-up shirt (so he'd at least seem to try to be presentful at dinner), when he heard the door close behind him. He was in the process of having one shirt off and the other shirt in his hand. He stiffened, then whipped around, half-expecting to see yet another Wethkin guardian come to introduce themselves. But it was one of the Clinic's tutors, Ms. Ranche, whom he had had about two years ago when his arm had been giving him a lot of problems, who stood in his semi-dark room (he had failed to turn on the light when he first came in, since he'd been in a sort of rush). There was a tense moment of silence. Xennik shifted uncomfortably, aware of his bare upper body. Ms. Ranche glanced into the upper corner of his room and then back at him, calculatingly. She looked him up and down. He was tempted to squirm uncomfortably, but somehow managed to stay still. He must have passed inspection, because a moment later she said, "Mr. Diagin." "Ca...Can I help you?" he stuttered, wrapping his arms around himself. She looked amused. "You can continue dressing," she replied, a small smile tugging at her lips. Again she glanced at the corner. Looking for a camera, perhaps...? Xennik felt a shudder coarse down his body. What could she want? He doubted taht she had just accidentally slipped into the wrong room. Whatever she was doing here, she had a reason. Wordlessly, he slipped the new shirt over his arms and began to button it up. "I need to speak to you." She said suddenly, advancing on him. In his surprise, he stumbled backwards, landing heavily on his bed. She stood over him, but not in a menacing way. Her stance was authoritive. Still, he felt himself tremble. She glanced at the corner again, then spoke in a rush, "I have five minutes, so listen up, and listen well. " Five minutes until what? "There are things going on around here taht you're not aware of. I want to help you." Xennik finally found his voice. "Help me...what?" Her eyes twinkled. "Get out."

"That's absurd." Xennik finally squeaked. Why had everyone suddenly gone bonkers?! First Auri, now Ms. Ranche? Why was everyone suddenly against the clinic? "Get me out of where?" She held out her hand and more or less helped him to his feet. She kept hold of his shirt, keeping him in place, so that when she spoke, her lips practically kissed his shoulder. "Out of here. It's dangerous here. There are things..things..." "No harm has come to me." Xennik swallowed. Yet, he failed to say. "Not to you. I-it's complicated, and-" "You have five minutes." he reminded her patiently, though she could easily feel him trembling. She smiled for a moment, but then grew serious. "True, no harm has come to you. But you haven't exactly gotten any better, have you?" "I-!" Xennik protested. "No! You haven't. I want to help you out, Xennik. They use you! All of the money that comes in for you, they use it on - on something. Not on you. And though they pretend to help the others, they don't help them either! I want to help them out. All of them. But it has to start with you." She stepped away from him. "You are their main source of income. As long as you are here, they will continue to earn money. If you are no longer here, then they will have to release many of their patients on the bases that they don't have enough money for them. Eventually, they would attract the eye of government officials, and the rest would be released, as well." Xennik was confused. "Wait. What...kind of things are they using the money for? I mean, it can't be all that bad-" "Illegal things." He blinked. "Really?" "I have no reason to lie to you." "But -wait. What did you mean "release the patients?" I mean-" "Whenever anyone is taken on by the Clinic, they are required to sign a contract. It's supposed to be a safety-type thing, of sorts. But they never actually tell you the small print. The patients who are under the contract cannot be released to another hospital until they are, quote, "cured." You, we all know, will never be cured." ".....Oh." Xennik's eyes widened with realization. He never was going to get out of here. He couldn't live here, not forever! No! He had only been able to stand it here with the thought that one day, he would be free. "Everything else is minor details. I can work 'em out. But none of it will work, if you don't want to leave." Xennik didn't want to leave. As much as he hated the Clinic, it was the only home he knew. But, Regen....Regen had never known the real world. "I..." "My time is running out, Mr. Diagin." "But, I-" "Mr. Diagin." "Don't rush me!" He cried. "Do you want to spend the rest of your life here?" "....No." "Do you want a chance to actually live, even if it requires working with an underground?" "I...I'd like it, I guess." "There are no 'I guesses'!" "I don't know! I don't...I really-" "Do you hate this place?" "No...I-" "This place has used you, Xennik. You are their prisoner. If you stay here, which you are doomed to do, you will never get a chance to live a real life." She paused. "Besides. Regen needs this. Xennik gasped. "You...know about Regen?!" "Do you want to leave this place? Do you want Regen to have a real life?" "I...yes." "Do you want to get out of here so badly you would break the law?!" "Yes." Xennik gasped, collapsing onto his bed, suddenly exhausted. "Great." She smiled. "Then you're in. I'll give you more information tomorrow." "Wait..." Xennik swallowed. "Can I...Can I send an e-mail?" She looked worried. "One. Mr. Diagin, make it good." Then she left him.

[A few miss-placed journal entries have been shoved into the journal. They appear to have fallen or have been ripped out, and then shoved back in in the wrong place. They are dated the middle of February. ] In his diary, Xennik Dear Diary, This morning I awoke to find seven.... creatures eating my hair. Not the most pleasant thing to wake up to in the morning, let me tell you. After a short wrestle, I managed to catch most of them under a glass cup that had been full of water, but they had already knocked all over the carpet. "What on earth...?" I gasped as I saw what they were. Seven tiny little....sprites, looking almost exactly like a Wethkin, only smaller. They ranged from pinks to purple to silver in color and seemed to be a variety of types, no two looking the same. One was roundish and blue with a heart on its head and a tiny pair of wings that it was flapping like a hummingbird. Another (This one red, pink, and purple) had no wings, but had a tail with a pink heart at the end of it and horns. The third, this one several shades of pink, looked like....well, a blob. It had tiny little wings, like the first one did, but no tail. Its little wings were also flapping like mad. Another one was purple, heart-shaped, almost, with large, flopping ear-like growths, and small eyes. Another was a magenta in color, with large, expressionate eyes. The silver one reminded me of Elvis, with a strange little cow-lick, and the last was red and brown, lacking in both wings and horns, it floated on a small ball beneath it. Apparently, these were the little valentines from my secret admirer. I still have no clue who this secret admirer is. Miss Arika? No, I haven't known her long enough. Tutor Temple? No way. Tutor Smith? Not likely. Dr. B -- no way. This couldn't have been Dr. Baron's idea of how to get me a pet. Not only have the menace-blobs reigned their terror on me, they've also left me with an enormous mound of candy that my secret admirer expects me to eat. If this is what it's like to fall in love, forget it. I'd rather be single for eternity. Ugh. The cup's not going to work. They're working together now to knock it onto the floor. I think it's suffocating them. And I thought Regen was a handful.

In his Journal, Xennik Dear Diary, Sadly, the menace-blobs are still here. Since calling them menace-blobs doesn't get their attention, I'm going to have to name them. Which, I guess, means that I'm agreeing to keep them. Oh, boy. The one with horns and a tail is now Assai. The blue one with little wings and a heart on its head is now Presto. The blobby one with little wings is now Vivace. The Elvis-look-alike is now Jig. The heart-shaped, eared purple one is now Medley. Brio is the large-eyed magenta one with tentacle-like growths on its head. The red and brown hovering one answers to Dolce. I got their names from my old band book. (I used to have quite the talent with the bassoon, but now I couldn't even dream of playing an instrument correctly. I've just gotten used to holding my cane in my left hand.) They all mean very, quickly, lively, fast, things like that. It suits them. And, surprisingly, they answer to their new names.

Later on, Xennik Dear Diary, Presto, Assai, Vivace, Medley, Jig, Brio, and Dolce are really living up to their names. Ugh. They're everywhere. Just now, Vivace was hopping along the dresser-top that just happened to contain Regen's Bowl. I heard a splash, and tunred to see it leap right in. "Nowait!" I cried, but I was too late and ignored, anyway. Regen was distraught, as her bowl is her specail place away from the world, and now it had been invaded by a living 2-inch terror. I leapt to my feet to get after the naughty Spritkin ( I looked it up, apparently they're a sub-species of Wethkin), but a lance of pain laced ffom my bad knee. Gasping, I sank back into my desk, where I had been working on a Sudoku problem. Soon all of the Spritkin realized that the bowl was a potential swimming pool, and were all jumping in, despite a moody Regen's curses and "No! Naughty!"s. Lost as to how to handle this situation, I made a distressed kind of whistling sound. I was answered by seven little voices, all whistling exactly as I had been. Interesting. I tried whistling again, this time three long whistles and one short one. In unison, they immitated me. While they were playing the Whistling Game, I managed to grab hold of my can, stand, and make it all to the bowl where they sat. With Regen's encouragement, I managed to herd the seven menaces toward their tank, which was a little fish bowl that I had covered with a wire cover and cut a little, lock-able door in, then filled with odds and ends that might interest them. And lots of candy. Apparently that was all that they would eat. Since then, they've been pretty calm, and have stayed away from Regen's bowl, though they keep insisting that I drop everything and play the Whistling Game whenever they feel like it. At least Regen enjoys the game, too. Well, that's all for now! Hopefully.

Xennik Dear Diary, Ugh! I'm exhausted. My schedule is packed! In Physical Therapy, Tutor Tiefin is trying to re-teach me how to do push-ups. That guy's insane! I can hardly keep a firm grip on a cane. I can hardly stand, for pete's sake! And now he wants me to do pushups for him. TORTURE. Speech isn't much better. Arika Viada, the speech tutor, insists that I'm behind. Can you believe that? Behind? How could she possibly know that I'm behind? Has she ever had a half-metal jaw before? No. Has she ever had a half-metal body before? No! Who does she -- do they -- think they are? How could they possibly know whether I'm ahead or behind? It makes me so mad. This morning Tutor Temple redecorated my room. She comfortably placed several small potion, charm, and decorative medicine bottles on what she calls my "Toy Shelf". Luckily, she has realized the importance of Regen's Bowl, and styled the whole shelf around it. Regen is thrilled, and just adores the little bottles, most of which contain blue and green liquids. Blue and green are Regen's favorite colors. However, Tutor Temple was not happy when she saw the huge pile of candy I still haven't gotten around to diminishing. But when she tried to through it all away, the menace-blobs went berserck. She finally gave in, proving to me that she can, indeed see both them and Regen, unlike many of my doctors, nurses, and tutors. But, that candy...I think... I have to eat it. Nurse Jiora isn't going to be too happy.

[The last of the miss-placed entries is a fairly short one.] Quote: Dear Diary, Well, there isn't much to write. Nothing extremely interesting or out of the norm has happened, besides almost everything the menace-blobs do, and they move to fast for me to be able to write it all down. I'm beginning to eat this mountain of candy. I eat only thirty pieces a day, well-spaced between pieces, as well, but I still think I'm getting sick. Where on earth did all of this candy come from, anyway?

Something was wrong with Regen. That was Dessin's first thought as he sensed the magic concentration around her shifting and morphing. He was in...another place, only somewhat in this world, so a breif battle ensued before he appeared in whole in Xennik's rather familiar and dull-looking quarters. By the time he had arrived, the magic sensation had died down and leveled out. It had been so weak to start with that, had Dessin not been constantly watching the puff for so long, he never would have noticed it. Now he dashed to her side, imagining the worst, and was startled to find- ...she had changed. Se was no longer raindrop-shaped. She lay in her little bed-tank with a human-like upper-body. She had grown, overnight, into a Nymphchild. "Raindrop!" Dessin cried in excitement. The little Nymphchild stirred, blinked her violet eyes, and ruubbed at them with her newly acquied hands. "Wha~?" "You grew! You've grown! Look at you!" He shrank himself down to her size and took hold of her wrists. "Look! Hands! You're a Nymphchild now!" Once the news had actually sunk in, Regen squealed with delight, hugging the ghost and dancing around with him. "I'm big! " she cried delightedly. "Look at me! I'm pretty!" she giggled happily as she saw her reflection, running her fingers through her hair. Dessin smiled fondly at her. "Just wait 'til Xennik sees me!" The smile faded from Dessin's face. Of course, she'd want Xennik to see. Dessin had been gone for days, he had come back, fought back, just to inform her of her growth, and she wanted Xennik to see her. He was feeling weak again already. He couldn't keep going on like this! Preserving energy for days just to appear in reality for a few breif minutes. He was getting weaker and weaker...
