Toasty Marshmallow i made this awesome vegan dish for a non-vegan potluck last night. everyone who took some ate all of it. (:
it was pasta, sauteed red onions, homemade pesto, garlic, and artichoke hearts, yum yum. You know, that's the funny thing about us non-vegans. Most of us like a lot of vegan foods just fine. In fact, we non-vegans eat vegan food all the time. We just happen to like to have a little meat on the side. wink

Stuff that I learned today... you can use the insides of banana fresh peels to polish your shoes if you are out of shoe polish! And non-gel tooth paste can be used to remove wax crayon. I got that info from 'How Clean is Your House?' I just love Kim and Aggie, those two are awesome! You guys would not believe how nasty some people are.

I saw the first hummingbird today! So I'm cleaning the feeders and making nectar----and cleaning out the bluebird houses, the bluebirds are just everywhere!!!
I also learned today that in Missouri a homebuilt trailer, like a teardrop, does not have to be built on a welded frame. Interesting---------

I bought a hammered dulcimer, made by a man who used to play at the George Washington Carver National Monument near here. I don't know how to play! lol but I have always wanted to learn. No books, I don't even know how to tune it yet! I can hardly wait! I think it will be great fun, even if I never get to Bach.
Does anyone here play?

Though, I lost respect for the one girl when she started advertising Clorox (or something) which I did not expect after she touted all natural cleaning products. Good luck on the dispatch Viridian. <3

I got these two things. Each $1.99!! <33 The tray I saw about a month ago, and really, really wanted it, but couldn't get it at the time. Today I went back to the same Salvation Army and it was still there! So I grabbed it and in searching through the kids toys for other stuff, I found the lion-thing. It's heavy and will make the perfect door stop. It's so adorably creepy. :3

This is a great thread to get moving and keep growing!
This week, I finished most of my early-season planting, just in time for some unsettled weather to keep them watered and introduce them to sun slowly.
Plants in: lettuce, broccoli, kale, collards, pansies, leeks. Seeds: spinach, carrots, parsley

Without electricity for three days---I learned that hummingbirds will still be at the feeder even in 85 mph winds, as long as it's in a sheltered area! That solar landscape lights are a great substitute for candles--and that paper lanterns with battery-powered lights inside beat them both for usable light. That a bag of ice will keep everything in my bottom-freezer refrigerator frozen, and a bag of ice in the crisper of the refrigerator keeps almost everything safe in the refrigerator for three days. That a small grill in the closet is much better than a big one under a tree or in a neighbor's field. That it's worth it to keep those milk jugs cleaned out and filled with water under the bed. That people in the country have campers instead of generators for a reason. That digital tv and weather radios are absolutely worthless where I live. That sometimes no power is better (last year we still had power, although the tornado came very close, and between the constant sirens and MedFlights, and the scanner telling me everything, it was heartbreaking). That it's not hard to build screen doors with hand tools.
I was also reminded of a few things----that sometimes the best words in the world are "We're okay." That the cell phone absolutely has to be kept charged up. That building your house on an east/west axis is good for more than solar gain. That sometimes having no big trees near your house is a good thing. That the full gascan intended for the lawnmower is a treasure that can get you to a shower and clean laundry. That even after clearing big trees out of the roads all day, a girl can still look like a princess at the prom---and stay out until 5 a.m.! That the power crews really appreciate a jug of iced tea and homemade cookies, or sandwiches...with a thank you note ....left on the hood of their truck. That watching the full moon rise in May, with the fog rising, the frogs singing, and the lightning bugs flashing, is one of the most beautiful experiences on this earth. That the swallowtails are always up at 5 a.m., no matter what. That there is something wonderful about the sound of a toilet flushing that you didn't fill with water from the pond. That just being together with no electrically-powered "conveniences" is fun.
That people in the midst of storm cleanup will still come together to spend a couple of hours together remembering those lost the year before.
That I never want a permanent home anywhere in the world except the Plains of the United States.
And that more severe weather is always right around the corner, so be prepared!

Hey! I forgot this one----a Ziploc bag with water inside hung over an open window or door keeps flies outside.
Really! I'm not kidding! Try it!! It's just amazing to me, but it works.

As in open, open, sans screen? And how did you come about this knowledge? I can't think of a time when a Ziploc bag would normally hang over a door?

pirhan sunsetsmile Hey! My youngest son went to Memphis with a friend who was turning 21, so of course they had to hit all the bars. It was hot and humid, and all the doors were open, with baggies of water hanging in the openings. They asked what the bags were for, and were told that, for some reason, the flies would not come in when the bags of water were hanging there. He told me this when he got home, and I, of course, did not believe such a ridiculous thing, so he filled a bag and duct-taped it to the open front door casing. He was right!!! I'm building a new front-door screened door right now. And there is a Ziploc bag of water duct-taped to the doorframe. The bag of water works so well that I wouldn't even build a new screen, if the cats weren't constantly bring in field mice, birds, frogs, and snakes to play with in the house. I need the screen to keep the cats out! blaugh
