Baldur wondered how she happeend to have so many missing chunks of time, but found it awkward to ask. Obviously she didn't know. "I've been at it about thirty years now. Can I ask...what happened to your world?"

"Are you cold?" Claudette asked.

She nodded, understanding. If it made him feel better to be this way towards her, then so be it. She also didn't want to push him about it, and she held back talking about her own experiences as not to upset him further.

Claudette looked at him quizzically, and said in a low, hushed voice, "Normally, I'd think that's a great idea. However... We're working on a technology advancement in SHADOW that allows us to drain their magic with these markings so we might be able to use it. We can't do it just yet, but we're getting closer every day." She hesitated, hoping Kira didn't hear that. "We think we might even be able to drain off their lifespan."

Actually, Mynoris does know, but it's not too far of an assumption to make that she wouldn't. Pursing her lips, she thinks over the question. "It was a war between the Gods and the mortals," she finally says. "The wrong combination of magic and divine power made it destabilize. Lives everywhere started snuffing out by the thousands; many of the Gods had invested so much in the mortal realm that their powers were weakened too much by the deaths to withstand the force." She shakes her head a few times. "By the end of it, the elemental deities were destroyed as well, at which point, the remaining nonliving material crumbled and vanished." She smiles, and it's the first bitter expression to cross her face. "A simple war between races seems a little trivial if I think about it from that perspective...so I try not to."

She's not speaking softly, so if anyone else is even half listening, they will likely hear this tale.

"A little cold," Veiris responded with a slight nod. He was glad she offered that explanation for him to take and claim.

He looked at her tattoos now as she spoke. "An interesting experiment. Well, I would hate to get in the way of your research," he said, trying to sound happier about it than he was. Using their marks against them- its was ingenious, and they seemed to deserve it. But he wondered if that meant his tattoos could be used against him.

He shook himself to clear away his darker thoughts. He didn't brood. He just didn't. At least, he kept telling himself that. He had one regret in life and wouldn't allow another. "I'd like to hear about it, when you manage it."

Baldur had always questioned the existence of the gods. If that was what happened when gods and mortals interacted, perhaps he was better off not knowing until after he died. Although, after she was finished speaking, it amused him to no end the similarities that could be drawn between Mynoris and Svana.

Both of them thought their war was the most important simply because of the scale. Although at least Mynoris tried to resist the urge of trivializing everyone else.

"So how did you escape it? Where did you go after?" he asked.

"Gods draw their power from their sphere of influence, as well as by their followers. At least, that's how it worked for us." Mynoris says. "Everyone else was weakened because they were losing influence. Conversely, I was gaining it faster than I ever had before. I believe this shielded me from the catastrophe, and in the final moments, the force of the destruction catapulted me into another reality entirely." (Yes, she did just claim to be a god.) She's silent for a few moments. "At least, that is my best guess. Since I was severed from the flow of my realm, I couldn't tell for certain. Our knowledge only extends to our own world; I only have a fraction of that knowledge left." Mynoris quickly drained the rest of her drink and ordered the second most potent thing they had. "War itself isn't necessarily a bad thing, but people have to know when to stop." She doesn't really think her war was any more 'important' than any other war; she simply was more personally affected by it.

While waiting for her next drink, she continued. "I found myself in a nexus, somewhat similar to this place here. There were people from all over and they came in many different shapes and philosophies. It was...quite interesting. But even then, there were conflicts, though the land belong to no one. That's when I started being a mercenary," she says.

"Of course," Claudette explained, her voice still low, "it can only be used against the Immortals. It's their magic in these markings, so we are technically bonded to them. It's just forcing that bond to go the opposite direction. We're going to start eliminating them. I don't think any of us want to live forever, at least not anyone in SHADOW feels that way. We're a small group, so there isn't a lot of variety of opinion."

Claudette fished around in her pouch until she pulled out a small, black object that looked like a watch, and she handed it to Veiris. The object didn't show the time; the screen was blank, but Claudette gently tapped the screen to turn it on. "KIRA PRESCOTT PRESENT" flashed across the screen in big, teal letters.

"This is the prototype," she said quietly.

Baldur nodded along, draining the last of his ale and calling for another one. Back to Mynoris, he asked, "...so you're a goddess?" somewhat dubiously. But whatever this place was, a "nexus" she called it, he supposed anything was possible. There was a man who altered his shape into a bird, although so could any changling back where Baldur was from.

"War," he added, deciding to throw in his own philosophy, "is only something I bring myself to care about depending on how much I'm getting paid. " He slanted a look toward Svana. "Or get something out of it."

"Was," Mynoris clarifies. "Not sure what I'd call myself now, so I just stick with giving my name. People can draw their own conclusions after that." She shrugs her shoulders. "I don't age or get sick, so those are a couple points in my favor, but I'm hardly unique because of those traits." She shrugs her shoulders. "You might be better off for it. Wars can vary quite a bit in method, scope, and purpose. But one thing that is almost universal is that people die and things get destroyed. Now, I don't mind so much that individuals die, but there comes a point where it's just wasteful, and I don't have much patience for waste. Still, I find that if I join a war, well, I might help bring it that much closer to an end."

((forgive the account switch. I'm messing with stuff on the Svanatar and didn't feel like logging out and back in.))

Baldur tipped his new glass of ale toward her. "Former goddess, then. You have to admit, it has a nice bloody ring to it. Not something a lot of people can claim." Bringing the glass to his lips, he drained a few gulps while he listened to her spiel on wars.

"Not sure I ever saw one without a lot of waste. It's just what I'm good at and after...well, for a while there, I wasn't quite right. Had a lot of anger I didn't know where to direct. Battle channeled that. Right or wrong, for the longest time, it was all I had," he muttered, glaring down at the table. Glancing up, he squared himself away. "I'd say this is probably the first war with an actual cause I ever really took part in. Funny idea to care about a war just because it's got people with the shape of ears as me in it."

Veiris stared at the object, wide-eyed as it lit up. He couldn't recall seeing something like this before. He figured it was run by a sort of magic that responded to touch as a command. Or reacted to the presence of the tattoos and the magic they held.

"Interesting..." was all he offered, not entirely sure how this small object was meant to reverse the direction of the bond.

"This bond is different than mine then. For mine, we are...equal; although I suppose I am more the student and the animal would be a mentor of sorts," Veiris spoke, still staring at the object, "So this item controls the flow of the magic in the bond?"

"It might have a nice ring to it, but it's definitely more impressive to announce that I'm the Goddess of Death. Especially if I have my face hidden in a hood and wear a lot of flowing black," Mynoris says with a wry smile and a chuckle. "Actually, I never did that. I've noticed a lot of Death gods and goddesses go for the pale skin, black hair, gloomy robes deal. Very depressing." She shrugs her shoulders. "My daughter was a lot like that though. Maybe I'm just strange. But, to me, death is just the conclusion of life. I didn't see much point in making it a big mystery."

"We didn't have elves on my world, nor did we have any race that was longer lived than another, though there was one group that often had shorter lives because they couldn't help but get into wars all the time. While I appreciated the extra power, I found their short tempers to be rather tiresome. That and they were terrible once they were dead; so restless." She shakes her head, lips twitching in remembered annoyance.

((OOC: No worries. It looks good though; and I like hair!))

Claudette was focused on Veiris's reaction to the object. She said, "Touchscreens haven't been used in centuries, which is why we felt it would be our best bet to revive some of that technology."

She sighed and said, "It doesn't entirely work yet. It still needs some tinkering because it either explodes or the wearer dies. We found that out the hard way. It would be nice if we had a bond like that," she was referring to the animal and shifter bond, "but unfortunately, these are the cards were given, and we need a good hand in order to win."

"It's supposed to absorb any Immortal magic in a twenty yard radius and transfer it to our own tattoos. It's about as complicated as it sounds. It works better if the Immortal has personally bonded with any one of us. For example, Kira and I are bonded, so if I could get this working, I could steal her immortality and magic as I pleased."

Chuckling, he shook his head. "I don't see why you wouldn't bloody well do that just for fun! Who wouldn't get a kick scaring the piss out of a bunch of mortals with a death speech?" One of the many reasons Baldur would probably make a terrible god.

When he reached the bottom of his cup, he set it aside and reached over his shoulder to snag the end of his long, disheveled braid. Blood stained some of the pale strands, gumming it up as he removed the band from the end and started working through it to straighten.

"So where is it your dead used to go?"

((Thanks!))

"Well, at first it was just a single realm. Kind of a gloomy place, like a smaller, shadow version of the real world. We didn't really have a concept of heaven or hell," Mynoris explains. "But as the races developed, well, people started doing some pretty awful things, and finally it was suggested that I split the realm and adopt a method of sorting out the good from the bad, so then I had three realms. We were a bit late starting religions, but when we did, some of the other Gods would claim certain favored souls for themselves. I had my hands full already, so I didn't care much one way or the other." Then she laughs. "I guess I figured that most people would come to me one way or the other, so I didn't really have the need to throw my power around like that. I was pretty patient back then. Most of the time," she amends quickly.
