So stop calling them that. They're alive.

The ritual creates a negative entity though.

According to the D&D description of it, negative entities = undead.

So we'll not follow the D&D description of it. We'll toss that out entirely and just look at the facts:

You can either be Alive, you can be Dead, or you can be NOT Dead (Undead). You can't be more than one at a time, and these three cover everything possible other than just non-living things. Though we can just lump them into the Dead category since they are not alive, nor are they undead.

So since your guys aren't dead (seeing as they can do things and don't just sit there rotting)... and they're not undead (by your own vehement admission)... then they are clearly alive, since it's the only remaining possible option. It's just the means in which they live that differ slightly from other things.

Conversely, seeing as they are a 'negative entity', and you claim that they are not in fact Alive... then they clearly have to be Undead. Because undeath is the opposite of life. It's what happens when you move the slider from one extreme (alive) through the middle (dead) and to the other side (undead).

A negative entity is classifiable as undead because they both fall under the category of 'anti-life'.

Accept one interpretation or the other, but stop being a dingus about it and pick one.

Terms like "negative entity" and "abomination" don't actually explain what they are, and how they differ from traditional definitions of either 'alive' or 'undead'. Either way, this ritual sounds a lot like magic, since that's really the only way to manipulate souls in a mythological context if you're not actually a god yourself; magic that would be dispelled by anti-magic.

I agree. Either the soul was connected to a new body with magic, or the body was warped either by science OR magic. Out of those three situations, the first would allow dispelling.

But depending on the type of ritual, I would argue that the bodies and/or souls might be recoverable, and able to be remade into dead-men on a later date.

I'm not really fond of the Undead definition, as that automatically has the connotation of rotting corpse bound with a soul just possessing a body, but "Dead-men" are like, Undead v2.0, they're the Dead soul fused with the body, so I guess you could consider them Alive in the regard their not just hanging around, their as much a part of the soul as a living person has a soul, but then again, their soul is a dead one, rather than a living one.

It's a soul that's already gone across the barrier, but is then brought back across and fused to the body so that it's not just temporary or a dispellable soul similiar to regular Undead, they are the exact same as a living person, but with a dead soul, rather than a living one.

For your information (this is addressing everyone), I'm making a note to add such definitions to the terminology thread as follows:

Alive - Alive. Living in some way.

Dead - Not alive. Not living at all.

Undead - Not dead. Not alive either.

So they're unliving, rather than undead. So, I can see the perma-bonding thing being resistant to the dispelling bullets. BUT! But, you need to have some sort of balance. You can't have them resistant against everything that can hurt them physically AND supernaturally (if my understanding that they're pretty hardcore when it comes down to physical combat). I would say tone them down, or give them some sort of vulnerability.

Also, a note concerning Undead: There are more versions of undead than just animated zombies. Vampires, as a basic example. You can't dispel vampires. But they are still undead. Just because they're not zombies, doesn't mean they're not undead razz

.....so they're the same as if someone dies and then is brought back to life. So, like, I think that means they're the same as half of the PCs here.
