I had fun at the beach today. I collected shells, beach glass, and stones!

I set up my seeds in pots (Bones helped) planted five tacca chantrieri seeds, got a new pair of gloves, saddle for my bike and got the Photobucket app for my phone. :3 Oh, and I also bought some seeds online.

I've had that bike for ten years and he's been to Australia and to Ontario and of course, BC. Chain has stretched, but given that they normally only last a few years, I think it's good. He asked me how aggressive I bike and I said, in a dead serious voice: no one passes me.

@ Ta Lu: It WAS fun!!!!!!!

@ Dragon: Ants, I hate them. We have so many ants this year it's just incredible. I think they're coming in to get out of the water! We use Terro, which helps some---at least it gives them a target, and they flock to it, instead of everything else. It has been my experience that they come to it for so long that I think I'm just feeding them, then they suddenly are gone. I have noticed that there are Terro products for sale for the outside of the house this year, which I never noticed before. The Terro for indoor use is just a boric acid solution, which has been the major weapon against ants for as long as I can remember. I don't know if it's the same formula for outside, probably not. I can tell you that if they're not gone here pretty soon, I will be tempting them outside and then murdering them by whatever means gets the job done. Period. No more Mr. Nice Guy!

Vacuum the bed and move it, check out where they're coming in, and----may the best man win. This is war! Go get 'em, girl!

If a funnel is spotted and there is a radar signature for rotation they blow the sirens in the towns near here, whether it has touched down or not. A couple of tv weathermen lost their jobs here because they called a tornado warning without the National Weather Service telling them it was okay, but they saved lives, and there was a public outcry in their favor. Better safe than sorry.

@ Dragon: Use a steamer. Cook them. It works!

I never thought about this until I was cleaning the hummingbird feeders this morning. They can live in water for weeks, but not HOT water. Most of the ants here have pulled their sudden vanishing stunt, but the rest have been lightly steamed---no butter, but very satisfying!

For all of you with emergency storage: Don't forget the swapping material!

soap, socks (especially little ones), chocolate!,.....you know, stuff you don't need/want, but that other people WILL.

Toilet paper! Charcoal!

We have stored individually wrapped Hershey bars for over 10 years in cardboard barrels, cool, dark, and dry, and they were good. Yeah, they were past date---when we stored them!

@ Sunset: what's the charcoal for? Filters? I'm always surprised that I don't have an emergency kit/storage. Probably because I move around so much, but still, considering my kits in my backpacks, I should be more organized. I'd definitely have candy, cigarettes, alcohol to barter with others. This reminds me that I wanted to learn how to use a gun and bow & arrow. So much to do!

Didi you actually eat the ants? I've had raw ants (yum!) but nothing else.

rofl rofl rofl No, I didn't eat the ants! although I definitely would have torched them, just BECAUSE, but they were wet! rofl rofl rofl

I used a steamer that you use for cleaning, not a cooking steamer! Although they were certainly poached. Poor little ants.

Charcoal to cook with. You can bake with charcoal-----cover a cardboard box with foil, inside and out, no flaps----just an open box. This is your oven. If you put a cake to be baked on a rack, on a concrete surface, with charcoal briquets under it, then cover with the box (be sure to place a small stone under one box corner for air), you can bake! I think each briquet equals approx. 20 degrees-----don't quote me, search! This absolutely cannot be done inside a closed space, but will work well in a garage, on a patio, etc. If you're doing this where I live, you need a big rock on top to keep the oven from blowing away! Timing depends upon the size of your oven. And remember, in a pinch, that a light bulb will work, just like the little kids' Easy Bake Oven.

I slept way too much because i hadn't slept for more than 2 hours a night for the last week. Washed some dishes, started laundry, made dinner, watched a bunch of video's on youtube from a channel called "Epic meal time" In which they intentionally cook the most ridiculous things they can think of. Like a turducken that starts with a quail, inside of a cornish hen, inside a chicken, inside a duck, inside of a turkey, inside of a pig. I was a impressed and also jealous...i require more disposable income for ridiculous cooking.

@pirhan: good to see you posting again. Thats a nice looking bike for being 10 years old.

@sunset: We dont have a whole lot of swap/trade material yet because theres a good bit thats got to be done before we get to that point but we're working on it. But i've got some alcohol and candy stashed away usually which could be used for that in a pinch.

Oh and i got an awesome deal on some charcoal recently for 5 bucks a bag for the big 16.6 pound bags so i bought 6 of them. So i'm set for grilling this summer. I've never thought about the lightbulb for cooking. But it would work. bigger oven just requires more lightbulbs of higher wattages. Bet i could cook a burger on my shop light if i were so inclined.

Do any of you remember seeing a woman that cooked on her car engine while she drove? It would have been on HGTV, probably Carol Duvall show, about 10 years ago or so. She would wrap the food in foil, like packets to bury in the coals of a campfire, then put it someplace (I don't remember where) on the engine, and it would cook. I remember the kids thinking that this was the coolest thing they had ever seen, and I did, too. Don't think a turducken would work, but something smaller certainly did!

@sunset: I've heard of and seen the concept put into action several times on television over the years. Not sure where it originated but i do remember people going as far as cooking really fancy multiple course meals and such.

I haven't done much the last few day's other than work. Went to bed at 2am today but woke up at 6am and was violently ill for 3 hours then i passed out and continued sleeping until 7pm. Now i'm getting ready for work. Tomorrow night is movies and drinks with friends so i wont be around again till this weekend if i'm not in the garden the whole time.

Today I was in my bosses vehicle and there was a baseball bat in the front seat, next to my leg. I asked if he played baseball and the response I got:

"You need to learn how to mind your own business."

I've been cramming for finals ever since last Saturday, with a test each day since Tuesday. I'm just about burnt out, but thankfully I only have to write a small 2-3 page lab writeup and I'll be done for this week with a small breather before I have to start reviewing for my last final.

biggrin

Hopefully all my Finals are in my favor and I can finally graduate with my BA in Biology! Now...what to do with it after graduating?

ahah I'm a bit nervous about the real world.

In the meantime, I'm planning on becoming a full time job hunter and work on my back yard, as a belated Mother's Day gift and "thanks for supporting me while I was in college" to my parents. Though fixing the yard is also going to be challenge. Bricks don't match, weird shrubs....I want to make a wooden raised bed but I'm not sure if that will look bad with some of the stone raised beds we have.
