"Frequently?" Terryn shook her head. "My father is becoming increasingly smothering as of late. I am honestly surprised he allowed me to leave the house today. But I can surely find the time every now and then, at least until they come to their senses." She looked at him for a moment, contemplating. "It would probably have to be at night, so I can steal away without being noticed. My father is a very heavy sleeper and on top of that Serina's snores are loud enough to drown out a thunderstorm."

"I could leave the house at night," said Marcus. This would work out. He would make it work out. "In a week, perhaps? I could go to your home, and you could slip out of the gate."

Terryn could almost see the determination in his eyes. It was a sort of strange feeling to know she had garnered such a look. "A week? With the presence of men like Andrew around and my stepmother's imminent return I will not survive three days without some respite."

"Three days it is, then," agreed Marcus. He lay back down again, clearly in no hurry to go back home. "Is it decided, then, when your stepmother is returning?"

"She sent a message to my father this morning." Terryn groaned and layed down next to him, her head resting on his chest. "She should be arriving by midday tomorrow."

"You must be overjoyed." Suddenly, a new thought struck him. "She doesn't know about me," he commented. "She's been blissfully unaware of...all of this. Are you going to tell her?"

Terryn shook her head. "No need. I read my father's response to her before he got the chance to seal it. Apparently they need to have a discusion about...my condition or something to that effect..."

"I do not...what?" Terryn gave him an odd stare. He looked like he had just had an epiphany of some sort.

The realization was so enormous that it consumed his thoughts entirely. Their insistance on marriage. Condition. Condition. The conversations between him and the Duchess were no longer unreasonable, they were the purest form of misunderstanding. "They think that you're...that we...they've assumed that you are with...my..."

"With your..." Terryn's eyes went wide as she clapped her hand over her mouth. "No, they could not...that is impossible. We have not...well I suppose that night we were here. But how would we know so soon? Oh no, this is impossible." It all made sense. Her father's insistance on eating, Andrew's pointing to her stomach. The sudden disappearance of her corset...it was all there.

"We have to straighten this out," began Marcus, a little dizzy. "Right now. Right away. Bid your driver goodbye. We have to go tell Grandmother that you're not...well, that we haven't...oh, bother. Evelyn's in the coach. Never mind her."

Terryn nodded, shaking a little as she stood. "This is why they refuse to let us be together. They think...oh dear Lord...they think we are trying to raise..." She shuddered. "My father knows I have sworn myself to celibacy, he knows that! Why would he be so foolish?"

"Probably reeling from the shock that you've found a man that you don't plan to kill anytime soon." And he couldn't exactly blame the Duchess. He'd had children before, after all. He stood up after her and began walking towards his own coach. "Quickly, now."

Terryn got into the coach quickly, alerted immediately as to where Evelyn was by the load snorting noises. She took a seat on the opposite bench and stared blankly out the window.
