I'm a computer technician, and statistically speaking the two things most likely to fail in a computer are the hard drive and the operating system.
Both of which usually result in you losing all of your data.
The easiest thing to say is that you should always back up your data, but seriously, even I don't do that, because I don't have anything important enough to save. If I do, it's probably still on the original source (say, digital pictures).
But more often than not we get people coming in who have "OMGTHREEYEARSOFWORK" that they never, EVER though to back up somewhere come in, and the only two options are replacing the HDD (which we can't do in store) or formatting it (which will erase everything).
In other words, my job is a teensy bit stressful and I see a lot of really angry people.

I'm just pissed that my OS was working completely fine until it tells me to restart and I put it off for a day. I'm like ok. Who cares.
Everything works completely fine and then I do the restart and BAM! bootup config has been corrupted/deleted...How the ******** does that happen without anyone noticing? xd
The only thing I'm pissed off about is I lost all my music, but I can eventually get that back if I'm patient enough. xd

An update for the game EVE Online removed boot.ini from the computer, which as the name suggests, is kind of essential for the computer to... er... boot.
I guess I've just seen all kinds of weird s**t roll through the store, including but not limited to a woman who said her computer stopped working while she was checking her e-mail, and when I booted it up there was no operating system.
... yeah.
You can never really say it's user error or just the OS being dumb. Not that I don't believe you (I've seen it before) but more often than not it's user error, particularly when you see something like LimeWire on their desktop after they swear that they haven't installed or downloaded anything lately.

How do you lose an entire OS without noticing?! xd Humanity will go down the drain.
It could've been something I did because recently I accidentally unplugged my laptop without the battery in. Killed it. So it could've gotten corrupt sometime after that. -shrugs-
All I care about is that it's back up and running. xd
