nice... you bought it, or just happened to find it? it's a good game.... never beat it. the cover art's pretty surprising, given the feel of the actual game.
i think.. the only game i OMG NEEDED TO HAVE was rocket knight adventures, which i eventually was able to get. i also may remix something from there.

Bought it at a used game store. It has the box but no manual. crying
And they've ruined the cover art of every Phantasy Star game - it's supposed to be Chaz (whose pants are WAY too tight on the box cover) in the center, what I suspect is Rune on the left (whose hair is supposed to be blue and his cloak should be white) and Rika on the right (who they totally screwed up).
My old Rocket Knight Adventures is... somewhere.
Unless one of my childhood friends stole it, which is a pretty strong possibility.

chaz, i could tell by his equipment. rune was the bad guy, right? he looks more like the medic good magician dude. and that looks nothing like rika... looks more like the numan/catgirl, what with the claws.

Chaz looks sort of okay.
What I assume is supposed to be Rune looks like a mix of him (good guy) and Zio (bad guy) with a little bit of Hahn thrown in.
And Rika (?)looks like some cross between Alys (with the brown hair) and the actual Rika (due to the aforementioned claws). They gave her weird pointy ears though.
And I can't seem to find the Japanese box art anywhere.
Eh well.

i was thinking alys when i said rika, but i think her name is risa. and it's like you said... has alys's attitude, but risa's face.
