"You misunderstand," Mynoris says a bit flatly. "I told her to have a seat so she wouldn't push herself to death. If I thought she was going to die, I would have said so quite directly. But some people die before their bodies are ready because their minds think they are going to die and can't be convinced otherwise. Never doubt the power of the mind; I've seen this sort of things many times." She tilts her head to the side. "Though she's not completely out of danger, the danger will be less if she rests and isn't forced to dodge any more blazing tornadoes." She shakes her head. "I have no intentions of taking all the blame for your assumptions." Her lips curve partway into a smile. "But I'll admit, I can see where you would have missed what I was saying. After all, we're not from the same place, so our ways of speaking are naturally going to have differences."

Then she looks over at Claudette, wondering if she might have stressed the woman by giving her a false pronouncement of doom. If the woman had been on Death's Door, she would have known it. Quite likely everyone else would have too, simply by her reaction.

Kira didn't take her eyes off of Claudette. She didn't think she could get close to her without Veiris trying to defend her, and that just made her angry.

"It is not my fault that Claudette is hurt," she said as Claudette was taking off her hoodie. "Claudette is a trained warrior; she should know how to handle obstacles."

Claudette folded her hoodie under her head, her body trembling. Without the hoodie, she had on a white tshirt and black short shorts, and somehow the two combined made her fresh burns brighter and more swollen. Kira didn't feel bad that Claudette was suffering, and she was glad Mynoris didn't try to help her.

"What's the deal with your eyes?" Kira asked, happy to change the subject.

Mynoris shakes her head, making a slight tsking sound. "Well, whose fault is it that she had any tornadoes to dodge?" she asks. "Now, I'm not a fancy spell-slinger, such as yourself, but I've fought a few mages in my time. Sometimes the human body just isn't fast enough. End of story." Still, she doesn't seem overly concerned with Claudette's health; her focus is mostly on Kira. "My eyes? Oh, I suppose that's just what they look like when I use my Death Sight. I've never really looked at myself in the mirror when I used it. I already know my own history so there's no need to use it when looking at myself."

Kira protested, anger bubbling beneath the surface as she retorted, "Claudette is my target, my underling, my slave. I can do whatever I want to her."

Her brow furrowed as she asked, "Death Sight?"

Mynoris arches an eyebrow at the younger woman's outburst. "If that is what you believe, then why not say as much in the first place instead of feigning innocence or kindness?" she asks. Then she nods her head. "I can see how closely tied someone is to death. This means how close they are to dying as well as how often they have had death on their hands. Generally the first is more useful than the second."

Kira growled, and said, "She is for my personal use. She's a slave to the Immortals, and therefore a slave to me. I can say what I want to her, and it doesn't matter what I choose to say. I am the kindest person she knows."

"Is there anyone here who is close to death?" She didn't break eye contact with Claudette.

Mynoris gestures towards Claudette. "Well, she's the closest, but I wouldn't say she's on the verge of death." Sitting up straight, her feet thudding to the ground, she folds her arms across her chest and gives Kira an intent look. "You weren't speaking to her, though, you were speaking to me. And I certainly don't belong to you."

((For the record, Baldur is also fairly close to running out of time. He doesn't have a large bank of years stored up like most elves. I think he's only got a handful of years, like two or three. I don't know if that counts as "close."))

"I told Claudette, and I quote, 'I could have killed you. But I didn't. Because I'm a kind person.' However, if you would like to change the status of ownership, I would be happy to fight you, conquer you, and enslave you. You have power I think would be useful."

She paused and said, "Claudette is closest to death? How do you figure that?"

((Ooc: Funny you picked up on that, Lily. I have been intending to have Claudette die at some point in the novel. I don't think I had mentioned that, actually. But we'll see))

((OOC: She's physically the weakest/most injured right now. She doesn't have any longevity or innate healing abilities, so she's the closest to death. Unless Baldur has a terminal disease or his body is literally falling apart right now, she won't sense how much 'time' he has left.))

"I'm sure you'd find I'm not easy to enslave," Mynoris says, almost lazily. "When you said you were kind, I was just pointing out your misuse of the word. Perhaps I was 'butting in' as I've heard some people call it, but she also wasn't wearing a sign signifying ownership. Apart from my Death Sight, I'm hardly psychic. However, when you claimed it wasn't your fault she got hurt, you were talking to me. The fact that you made such a claim in the first place, and then later stated you didn't care, came across as a contradiction. That was interesting." The woman leans back again, though her arms are still folded across her chest; apparently she doesn't see Kira as much of a threat yet.

"That sounds as though it would be something anyone would say; no one wants to be enslaved. Claudette has the markings of an enslaved human around her elbows, wrists, ankles, and along her back. Feel free to take a look; you'll find them. Especially without that jacket she wears."

"I don't care," Kira said. "She's just another pathetic little human we're going to wipe out. What should I care whether she lives or dies?"

She was seething.

"Hmph. You don't have to care about whether she lives or dies. What you should care about is an unknown element," Mynoris points out. "Without knowing much about me, appearing to change your mind so rapidly could be an unwise move." She leans back into a stretch. "If I have the chance, I'll take a peek to see what to look for in the future. But the marks of slavery can change across nations, times, and dimensions. For some, having hair marks a slave; for others it's baldness. In some places they're marked by racial traits, such as the shape of their face, the color of their skin, or even their height. In other instances, they have to be marked physically, often by brands, tattoos, or bands that are almost impossible to remove. I've seen places where slaves are forbidden from wearing clothes, or have their tongues cut out. So, in a place like this, I'm not going to assume anyone is a slave...or a slave owner." Which is all very reasonable. At least, she sounds as though it is.

((OOC: I'm not sure if it came across as such earlier, but my avatar is supposed to kinda resemble what she looks like.))

Kira grinned. "That may be true and all, but the mark of an Immortal's slave runs deep. It causes them to be hurt easier by magic, it causes them to feel more pain from simple injuries, and more. Claudette's markings can bind her to the floor if I so choose to force that. I don't have to shave her head, undress her, cut her tongue out, or do any of that. These are markings imbued with magic and applied by flame. There is no breaking that."

Turning to Svana, she said,"That does bring up an interesting point. What do you do to mark your slaves, Svana?"
PostPosted: Sun May 31, 2015 3:24 pm

Baldur's hands instinctively ran over the scars on his arms and wrists, muscles jumping out on his jaw. He sulked a little lower in his chair, expression going hard. Beside him, Svana seemed to contemplate that.

"We generally stick to collars, when we need them. I mean, the simple fact that they're non-elven in our swamp marks them as a slave. Either that or a trespasser, which we will either kill or enslave, so it's moot point. Most of the slaves used for labor are kept penned, though, and we all know the faces of the ones permitted to roam."

Perking an eyebrow, her companion asked, "What about Urt? He doesn't wear a collar and you even had him to raise part of an army for you. You almost treat him as an equal."

She snorted. "Of course he's a slave. I trust him implicitly, but he was born and raised to serve me. It's his pleasure to do my bidding."

He frowned, but she missed his displeasure.

((Lol, I totally forgot Baldur is against slavery for very specific reasons. I'll be sure to add in that to his reactions from now on.))
