The proper way to say it is "pea can". But yankee's and people who never had to grow up around the bloody trees and pick them up themselves keep saying pecons....
You know, I have yet to see the rule in the english laungage that makes A sound like O. How does a word spelled P E C A N make a CON sound? They they'll go "No a pee can is what you piss in at night" and I'm like "Who in the hell pees in a can? Maybe a bottle if you're on a long trip and can't stop, but they had outhouse long before cans.

There's no accent involved. It's a consious desision on how you say it.
It's rather funny to here two different commercials talking about pecans using the two different ways of saying it though.

You got me, but people who say "pecon" are usually from up north or was raised by people who moved down south. A woman from Texas tried telling us that pecon was the sothern way to say it and I said "Tell that to the lady from Montana who thought it was a northern and poper way to say it".
For more information, Texas was a woman my dad was talking to online and Montana was where my ex's mom was from.
