The Duchess beamed. "Oh, this will be fun." Still smiling, she firmly stamped her late husband's ring into some molten wax. "I just hope I can keep a straight face when I announce to Marcus that he's about to meet a woman he's never heard of."

The earl chuckled. "I assure you, it will be no worse than how I will be when I tell Terryn that Andrew DuBois will be calling upon her again." He had a youthful, impish twinkle in his eye, as though they were students planning a trick on their lessons master. "We are horrible."

"We are forceful," corrected the Duchess. "Very, very forceful, and remarkably clever."

"So that must be where those two get it from." The earl sighed in an obviously exaggerated tone and rolled his eyes. "Steven, please send these out immediately." The attendant in the room nodded and took the letters off to be given to the courier when he made his next rounds. "So what shall we do in the meantime?"

The Duchess considered her options. "I daresay it's time to bring them out now. They've been there for quite some time, after all." And she stood, regal as ever, and headed up the stairs.

"Quite right." The earl stood and followed her up the heavy stone steps, wondering if they were really in there. Terryn normally forbade anyone from entering her room.
Terryn quickly pulled away from Marcus's more than innocent kisses. "Did you hear something?" She held herself still for a moment and heard pounding on the stairs outside. "Oh no...they are coming."

"I really couldn't care less," answered Marcus, still on top of her. His clothes were far from presentable, and the elders would find out what they were up to anyway. "Must we stop?"

A knock on the wooden door gave them their answer. "Unfortunately, I believe we must." Terryn tried to drag out the final seconds of solitude they had with a deeply passionate kiss, but something was lost with the thought of her father banging on the door. She rolled her eyes. "I do not wish to open it."

Marcus sighed and shifted himself to the edge of her bed. "I'm sure we'll see each other soon," he said, inserting some confidence into his voice.
The Duchess, feeling rather impatient, knocked against the door once more.

"One moment!" Terryn fixed her hair and dress, taking a quick look in her vanity and letting Marcus tidy himself up before she opened the door. "Good evening."

"Good evening," answered the Duchess, very pleasantly. "I'm afraid that your father has something to discuss with you, and it's time that Marcus and I return to our home."

Terryn looked back to Marcus for a moment before nodding. "Very well." She left her room, waiting for Marcus to follow before she clsed the door and started with the rest of the party downstairs.

Marcus took Terryn's hand inconspiciously and headed down the stairs, ignoring the suspicious glances that his grandmother kept shooting his way.

When Terryn and Marcus finally got downstairs (it really had only taken a minute but to her it felt like a walk down death row), she pulled him quickly around the corner to give him a last minute kiss before they were pulled apart. "I shall make sure to write you until we are allowed to meet again."

Writing seemed so dull now though. So slow and impersonal. "Running away is still unacceptable?" asked Marcus, with a hopeful look. He realized, of course, that it was, but he'd done plenty of unacceptable things in his life thus far, and one more couldn't really make a difference.
