...And it tasted completely average. Served him right! She had no idea about the other man, but if he was partners with a guy like that, he deserved it too. Nanami gave Kevin an accusing stare before moving onto the next table. What a strange mix of flavors that was...
Next was Keith and Quentin. A father/son duo? How cute. Nanami smiled at them before looking down at their dish. She had no idea what it was, but it didn't look bad. Sure, she didn't know anything about French food, but the other judges could take care of that, right? After examining it for a moment, she took one and placed it into her mouth...

...Whatever that was, it was good! She liked the fruit~ Maybe she could ask that guy what it was, so she could get Haruka to make it some time? That would be great, she'd like that a lot~
Moving on to the next table, she greeted Freja and Celeste with a small smile. A girl duo? That was so cute~ Unlike the past two tables, she actually knew what this food was. French toast! That was French, right? It had the word French in it, and that was good enough for her~ So, she quite happily took a bite from the girls' french toast.
+1 for just being cute

...Oh! That was good, really, really good! Almost as good as Haruka's! Not quite perfect, but close. It was so fluffy and sweet, but not too sweet~ It was a perfect balance. She wanted to personally commend these girls for a job well done, but she wasn't sure if speaking was allowed, so she decided to wait until later, and instead moved onto the next table.
She wasn't sure if it could get any better than that, but it could! Because up next was her beloved daughter, Haruka! She flashed a bright smile at the teenager, ignoring the girl's horrified expression. Best if she just pretended like she couldn't see her~ Oh, she made quiche! It had been a while since they had that, hadn't it? ...It didn't look as nice as she remembered. But it must have been the lighting. Yeah, the lighting.
+2 for being an incredibly biased mother

...Hm. It wasn't as good as she remembered. Sure, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't what she had been expecting from her daughter. Haruka's cooking was the best in the world! Well, she chalked it up to being just a rough first round, and moved onto the next table.
Ahh, next was Hayden and some man she didn't know! She didn't know Hayden cooked! ...Or maybe not, because this didn't look like cooking at all. She stared at the mess of sweets in front of her, and hoped that it wasn't Hayden's doing. But wait, wasn't this the appetizer round? They had gotten it mixed up! She didn't know what counted as French or not, so she just ignored that. She felt bad for Hayden, as she took a bite of whatever that was...

...And it was just kind of unimpressive. Nanami wasn't a big fan of sweets to begin with, so maybe that was why. It was an interesting mix of flavors, but it was a little too sweet for her tastes. It wasn't Hayden's fault that she wasn't big on desserts, but hopefully next time he and his partner would follow the rules in the next round.
Next up was another girl team! A pair of young women. Whatever they made, it looked pretty good. No matter how hard she stared at it, though, she just couldn't for the life of her figure out what it was. There was something yellow on it... How strange! Eventually she gave up trying to identify it and just took a bite.

...Well, it certainly was interesting, but Nanami wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not... Was that banana? However unique it may have been, it just didn't make much of an impression on her. How odd. And so she moved onto the next table without much of a second thought.
The next team definitely grabbed her attention, however. It looked to be the man she had identified as the mayor's brother, and... a monkey? It took her a few moments to register this, but she figured that a monkey was a better competitor than a panda or a walking stick, so who was she to judge? Their dish didn't look very appetizing, though...

...That was average, too! Nanami didn't know that food made by a monkey could be so boring! Really, what was going on? Why was all of the food this round so unimpressive? She made no effort to hide her disappointed frown as she moved onto the next table.
Another father and son duo, Conor and John! They looked to be around the same ages as the duo from before, too. What a cute coincidence~ Well, that was enough to make Nanami feel a little better, though she really did have her hopes on these guys to break the pattern. French fries! It was hard to mess up with french fries, right? ...Not that they looked great. But french fries were french fries, you could burn them in the oven and they'd still be edible.

...Okay! So it was better than the other dishes! It still wasn't great, but it was better than a lot of the others. It could have just used some more salt! ...And maybe a little less char.
Next up -- Alanis and Lucas! Nanami recognized Alanis from the various festivals around town, and the both of them as being from Haruka's class in school. But she didn't know them personally, so no extra points for them~ Were they a couple? That was nice~ What had they cooked? ...It looked like a sort of soup. Just soup. There wasn't much to say about soup, so she proceeded to try a spoonful.

...Aaaand, it was soup. Boring old soup. And just when Nanami thought things were starting to get better, she got presented with boring soup! She let out a long sigh as she set down the spoon, and then moved onto the next table.
It looked like another couple, Turner and Talna. It looked like they had made some sort of roasted turnips. It was beautiful! Nanami was no fan of turnips, but even she had to admit that these were the best looking turnips she had ever seen. They were almost too pretty to eat. Surely, something that was so pretty had to be good, right? She wasted no time to find out.
+1 for high expectations.

...Well, it was okay. Not nearly as good as she had been expecting. But I guess when you're expecting the turnip to reverse one's disdain for all turnips, it's easy to be disappointed. Nanami tried not to hold it against them. Still, how nice it would have been if that dish had tasted as good as it looked~ And so, her shoulders slumped in defeat, Nanami moved on to the next table.
It was another girl team. ...Was that girl wearing cat ears? The other young woman didn't look like she was feeling particularly well, as well. Nanami paused for a moment, wondering if she should say something, but she decided to let them deal with it in between rounds, and instead focused on their dish. ...Was it even cooked? She couldn't help but feel apprehensive about this, she wasn't sure if it was safe to eat. But Gladice had eaten it and survived, it couldn't have been that bad... And so she summoned her courage, after a moment's hesitation, and took a bite.

...Agh! That was awful! The worst thing Nanami had ever eaten! Well, that was probably an exaggeration, she had eaten some really bad things, especially when Haruka was a baby and she was in charge of providing meals despite her low income, but this was still bad. She had no idea what that meat was, but it was slimy and squishy and gross. Ick, she felt sick. Now she understood the Chinese girl's expression.
...But next was Raiden! Oh, and was that his sister? They had the same hair! ...That is, until he dyed it. But that was so cute, he was cooking with his sister! She'd have to tease him about it at work later. What had they made? Stuffed mushrooms? How nice! She was looking forward to this, but she really hoped that it was good. She wasn't sure she could face him at work if it were as bad as that last dish.

...It... wasn't really very good, was it? It wasn't terrible, but... she still struggled to think of anything good to say about it. Good thing Raiden wasn't studying to be a chef, right? She should try to be optimistic! Thankfully, it wasn't too bad for her to feel awkward, but she still flashed him a reassuring smile before moving on.
Oh ho! Another person she knew! Xeiro, one of her more regular customers! And was that his daughter? No, he hadn't been married long enough for him to have a daughter that old. A sister, then! She was really enjoying all of the family teams today~ What had they made? Fritters, or something? ...It really didn't look that great. But looks weren't everything! There was still hope!

...And yet another boring dish. Wasn't Xeiro a professional baker? Nanami had expected a little more from a man who baked for a living. Oh, but maybe baking was completely different from cooking? She wouldn't know, she had never really done well enough with either to know. Well, she could forgive him this time...
And that was it! Most of the dishes had been boring, but Nanami hoped that the teams would up their game for the next round. And with that, she returned to the judge's table to wait for the next round.

As soon as the redhead had sat down, Gaston had sprung to his feet and dashed immediately to the first station that came to mind - Talna and Turner Hipp's! He could sense beauty from miles away and here he smelled the strongest of all; their turnip dish was so beautiful! Perfect! He adored it, absolutely, adored it! Just the strategic placement of the large turnips and the bit of green accenting the pale color of the plate - of course, it was already bit into, so the beauty was marred somewhat, but, he still could see how perfect it truly was! No one could match up to this! NO ONE!! ..Well, maybe Alanis and Florence~ But, certainly no one else! He smiled excitedly at the pair before he dug in to taste the all too beautiful dish~( +1 for perfect score! )
