In that completely inappropriate way of girls Nell flung her arms around her friend. 'Neph! I'm so glad your okay!' In that moment that Nell gave herself to embrace Neph.. it looked like the fight was resolving itself. Things happened so fast..
The air was crackling with the energy that her Guardian was summoning and Nell blinked a few times shoving Neph against a wall and out of the way..
As the portals were left open and the combat drew to a close, Trivii made one last effort to quell the storm she had called and thunder rippled through Durem, it was deafening and the only warning that the others received as the uncontrollable rebelled against the reigns holding it, refusing to part peacefully there was a flash of light as fingers of electricity danced over the land, everyone felt something akin to a painful and powerful static shock as a bolt came out of the ground near Mystic, channeling through him.
A bolt cut through the sky super heating the sap in a fir tree nearby causing it to all but explode, and as the water in the main line through down came to a boil the fire hydrant nearest the group started vomiting into the street, and a couple car alarms began crying..
Fisting her hands the cat girl pushed passed Nell and Neph horrified.

Becca was about to yell equally frustrated: Then do something! but bit back on her words because, well. Reyna actually did do something.
Besides, the tall woman realized, the anger she felt was mostly directed at herself because she'd allowed Bree to get away from her. But how could she have possibly known the fae would be so swift when she did not want to be protected! Her brawny body tensed each time the portal flared back to life. Her hands clenched to fists she was ready to lunge right through and wreak havoc on whatever she'd find beyond to retrieve her boss.
But the portal refused to fully open, and that was when it started to sink in. She'd failed to protect Bree. Her eyes darted about, looking for someone to explain this madness to her.
Amon's perplexed expression clearly said: Who, me? when Reyna ordered him about to help. But then it dawned on him with a bit of a shock: Yes, she did indeed mean him. He might be a bloody beginner, but he was in fact a magic-user now.
"Crap," he swore under his breath and gave the portals look somewhere between defiance and misery. Why did it have to be portals of all things? Besides, he didn't even know how to 'do' them yet. Actually he didn't have to, he realized a moment later. All he needed to do was to fuel the spell that was already there with his magic, and that was something he knew how to and had done before.
"I got this," he confirmed with a quick nod and focused, glad there was something he could do to help. Well, he got one of them at least, but that was better than none.
Her red eyes wide, Smokey nimbly danced out of Mystic's (Malik's, part of her insisted on that other name) reach. Dude, had he gone mad? Had she gone mad? Because that part of her also wanted to taunt him that obviously he was alive now, so no big deal—and that was just plain mean and not something she would do..
'That wasn't me!' she protested instead. 'That was the other guy!'
She kept moving backwards as she dodged Mystic's claws, until found herself backed up against one of the portals that had flared back to life—rounds of fire now instead of shadow, due to the nature of those who kept them open.
'Dude,' she said to Mystic (Malik) right before she fled through the portal. 'Your hair looks funny.'
Amon only half registered Reyna's warning. He'd just begun to wonder about what was up with the strangely familiar smell and his hair starting to stand on end and if that might be a weird side effect of all the magic that had been cast about. Because, how was he supposed to know?
"What now?" he started. And why was everybody running? Or jumping through a portal, in Smokey's case. Was she nuts? He gave an undignified yelp of surprise when he was unexpectedly swept off his feet by the demoness, and moments later a deafening thunderclap answered at least that one question.
Nephrite simply kept clinging to her friend, eyes wide with shock as the lightning struck. 'Trivii did that?' she asked in awe.

Reyna made it into the shop just as the lightning struck. Despite that, the proximity made her already sensitive ears ring in the worst way. She grumbled and let loose her grip on Amon to allow him to slide down to the ground so that he could stand on his own. Athan she laid down on the floor for the moment to check to make sure he was still breathing. She sighed in relief to discover he still was, but looked concerned by the state of his emerald pendant. It was cracked and large hunks of it were missing.
“Oh ********. The portals,” she muttered to herself. “We gotta keep those stupid things open. That pendant contained Athan’s memories and gods only know what else.”
She turned to exit through the open window and paused briefly as she realized her idiot Shadow had gotten struck by the lightning. She snickered despite herself and glanced over at Amon. “I gotta go see if Mystic survived that. Keep an eye on Athan.”
She marched over towards where he was splayed out on the ground and gazed down at him with her arms crossed over her chest. She was cranky, and she felt a massive migraine in the works. “Hey,” she said, nudging him with her boot, “You still alive?” She didn’t get a response, so she picked up a stick from the tree that had exploded nearby and poked him with that. “HEY. Mystic or whatever your name is now.”
“Ughhhhh… Yes. Still alive,” Mystic croaked out. His mouth was dry, and his ears were ringing, which made speaking and hearing exactly what was being said to him difficult. His entire body felt like it was on fire, and from what he could see of the little tendrils of smoke wafting off of him, that was likely an accurate assumption.
“Oh good,” Reyna said with a smile, “Looks like you’re starting to heal already, too. Congrats on being more demon than Shadow now. Also: get up and help me with these portals before there’s not enough residue of them left to re-open.”
Mystic groaned as he stiffly managed to get himself to his feet, but did as he was asked. “Uhm. I didn’t… hurt anyone… did I?” he asked slowly. The entire situation was a bit of a blur for him. He vaguely recalled trying to attack Smokey, but wasn’t completely sure why. He was in so much pain, he was delirious.
Reyna eyed him warily. “Not really. You and Athan took the brunt of the damage from the looks of it,” she answered. She went right to opening the portals and worked at reopening them. “Hey!” she called out to all the remaining people who had gathered that were starting to come to after the lightning strike, “If any of y’all know anything about portal magic. Get over here.”
“I should be able to take care of it,” Mystic said in a raspy voice. He called forth a handful of runes and each portal flared back to life with a vivid black and purple flame.
Reyna stared over at him for a long moment. “Thanks?” she said slowly. Who was this guy and where was her misfit Shadow? “Okay,” she said as she gathered her wits about her, “Here’s the deal. We need those shards back and pronto. We’re going to have a hard time taking down Ezra without Athan, and well… I’m sure we all know what happens to our Shadows if Athan kicks the bucket. Who's up for a game of find the needle in the haystack?”

(( From this point onward within this RP, you get to decide if your character is going to hop through one of the portals to help find shards. Details of how to go about doing that is located here.
Mystic will remain at this scene to clean up and keep said portals open since not everyone's characters are capable of casting that sort of magic. He will also direct you to Reyna's house to regroup and bring all the shards together.
Please feel free to continue posting your character's responses to everything that has happened within the battle/lightning strike/etc. Also feel free to bring in any new characters that would be arriving to investigate or happened to be nearby by chance if you want to get involved.
For reference this is Mystic's current form: this body with this face. This current RP is what caused the partial/face transformation, but he's been stuck in Evolution for a while. If you want to interact with Mystic before entering and immediately after leaving the portals, continue posting here in this thread. 3nodding
If your character knows how to get to Reyna's house and/or Mystic has opened a portal for you to get there, you'll want to head to this thread to see where everyone is at once Reyna has arrived at her home to care for Athan. ))

"Gotcha," Amon said, glad to be back on his own two feet. He did not complain, however, not after he caught glimpse of the smoldering fir tree and an equaly smoldering Mystic. So he'd just been saved yet another time, like some damsel in distress. No big deal, his dignity was was a very flexible thing when it came to survival. He knelt down next to Athan, a look of genuine concern for his friend and teacher upon his face. He knew Reyna had already checked his vitals, but he just had to do so again, for himself. Slowly the gravity of what just had happened began to sink in. Athan injured in ways he could not fathom. The madame taken hostage. Two of the people who meant most to him, and who—in his mind—were pretty much invincible. Bree's terrified expression as she was yanked from his grip would haunt him for quite a while, as would Athan's shocked look. He rose back to his feet to take quick inventory of himself. Apart from some minor cuts and bruises he was good to go. The ringing in his ears was bad, but it was beginning to ebb so he could hear Reyna's call to action just fine. He gave the portals a long look. Mystic's shadow element gave them a picture perfect appearance of black magic. He'd never liked how you could not see what lay beyond the event horizon. Might be open space. Might be a horde of hungry beasts just waiting to rip him to pieces. Might be a deep chasm with a bunch of sharp spikes on the bottom, or some world where the air was poisonous and it rained acid and fire. Something like that. What with how that one portal had turned out to be locked, but the others were not, it was plain obvious it had to be a trap. "I'll go," he heard himself say. (( Amon's adventure can be read here. ))

Reyna nodded as Amon agreed to venture off to find one of the shards. He definitely got a gold star for bravery since she knew how much magic and portals freaked him out. He had pretty much been surrounded by magic for the better part of the day and hadn't run for the hills yet.
She looked around anxiously, not sure what her own next move ought to be. She couldn't leave Athan's unconscious form in the shop like some kind of bait for Ezra, but she also needed to keep an eye on the portals. They couldn't afford to lose any of the fragments. She pressed a hand to her face in frustration. Neph had also mentioned that Ezra had Hawk. <********,” she cursed under her breath. That meant that Ezra now had Bree and Hawk both. Plus Athan down for the count. She had been in a lot of bad situations with Athan through the years, but this one was by far the worst to date. They had never been quite so out gunned, not even when Doran had shown up.
She jumped when she felt someone put their hand on her shoulder. Startled, she turned around abruptly to find herself face to face with her Shadow. Could she even continue calling him that? Shadow? The hand on her shoulder was warm, as much flesh and blood as she was. Despite the mangled look of his face, and shadows that seemed to bleed out from his form, he was very much a man now. What kind of man remained the question.
“Hey,” Mystic replied, voice still raspy from the force of the lightning strike earlier, “I'll take care of the portals. Get Athan back to the house where it's safe.”
Reyna breathed a sigh of relief. “Thanks,” she replied. She wasted no time in dashing back into the shop to gather up Athan. Before she could even ask, Mystic had the presence of mind to open a portal for them that would lead directly back to her house.
He allowed that portal to close and kept a careful eye on the others from a bench situated on the sidewalk next to the shop. He grumbled as he gazed down at his feet which were bleeding and blackened. Most of his wounds looked like they were beginning to heal, and weirdly enough the glass shards he had stepped on seemed keen on popping out of his skin as it healed. It made him wonder exactly what Reyna was pondering: what was he? A demon like her perhaps?

Moving out of the shadows the cat girls ears lay flat and her tail twitched like a quick metronome. She took a moment and stopped to hug both Nell and Nephrite while the quiet conversation started, lifting her head only when Amon made himself tribute.
Then her still glowing opal eyes landed on a portal. It didn't really mean anything to her, but it could have a profound impact on Nell. Dropping her gaze back to the duo she hesitated. Nell was too young to be left on her own.. she may be in more danger on the other-side of the portal.
Pale green eyes flashed as something of what Trivii was thinking must have echoed along their bond and planting her hands on Trivii she pushed the woman away, breaking the slight embrace between the woman and the girls.
'You're going. Because I am not staying here while other people have all the fun.'
"Are you alright? Both of You?"
The question was answered by incredulous looks that clearly relayed that neither of them were bleeding to death, and neither had been half cooked by lightning.
Her ears perking Trivii pulled her knapsack around and kneeling, checked its contents. Looking up at Reyna.. she sighed and nodded. "Stay close alright Nell?"
'Of course.' Giving Neph one last hug. 'We'll do something when I get back.'
Advancing the the center area, Trivii gave a half smile and shrugged. "We're in." Tilting her head should couldn't help but sniff at the portals before shifting in front of one and taking Nell by the hand.

Nephrite hugged back. 'Please do come back. Not dead. In one piece. You know this is going to be a trap for sure, right?'
Speaking of which.
She quickly wove her way past guardians, fiends and portals to wrap her hand around Amon's wrist. 'Have you gone insane,' she hissed. 'This is so obviously a trap. You are going to get yourself killed!'
Amon flinched and instinctively pulled his arm from her grip. The presence of so many portals nearby made him incredibly antsy, especially what with how dark and sinister these looked. And this time there was no Athan to sneakily trip him through.
"It has crossed my mind. And if I get killed, you're screwed, is that what you're worried about?"
'I . . .' Nephrite stuttered.
"If we don't get those shards back there's a huge chance we'll all be screwed. But actually, that's not the reason I am going."
'It's not?' Nephrite gave him an incredulous look. What else could possibly prompt him to go on a suicide mission like that?
"You wouldn't understand."
'Try me,' Nephrite snapped.
"Hit wikipedia, look up 'friendship'. And don't you dare follow me." And with that he had stepped through a portal and was gone. Her presence had made this so much easier for him.

Mystic's head tilted to the side as he watched Amon and Nephrite interact with one another. Wow. He couldn't remember when he had last seen a guardian and their Shadow hold so much contempt for one another. He wasn't sure whether or not to be impressed or concerned. It was a sharp contrast to Trivii and Nell in comparison.
"Eh, I really wouldn't follow him through that portal, Neph," he called from where he sat as he picked shards of glass from his skin. His voice, while rough from the damage he had suffered from the lightning, sounded more like himself. It also seemed to hold a mild, albeit familiar twang not unlike Reyna's accent. "I agree that it's a probably a trap, but I'd wager he could burn down whatever might be waiting on the other side."

Nephrite's sharp frown clearly said that it was none of his damn business, but after a moment her features softened.
'I guess so,' she relented, but kept her eyes on the portal her guardian had stomped off through, expecting him to come back running and screaming any second now. After a while she quirked her brows, a little disappointed when that didn't happen. 'Well, he's not dead yet.' She'd know, for certain. 'Guess that means he got lucky and there's no waterfolk about.'
She'd never quite been able to figure out what that was about, his fascination with the mermaids and nixies and water nymphs. Shouldn't he, as a fire person, feel appalled by them? Hell if she knew.
She lingered about, gathering her cloak around her shoulders as if she was cold, and looked quite lost in an unguarded moment. She was unsure as to what to do with herself now. She had dropped off her warning even if it had been of little use in the end. Trivii and Nell were already gone, so was Reyna. Mystic did not seem to need her help either. From the looks of it he was healing up quite fine and did not require any of her ointments or to be patched up.
"Oh, so it was here after all!" a female voice said full of surprise.
Nephrite twitched, her slender green fingers instantly forming into claws before she regained her composure a moment later and relaxed them. She knew that voice all too well. *Amy~!' she said as sweetly and with as much fake relief as she could possibly muster. She knew Amaranthe was just about as dense and gullible as Miranda was. Really, birds of a feather, those two, including the questionable choice in their outfits. 'I am So Sorry about what happened. I must have confused the containers with the herbs for your tea. I'm really glad to see you recovered'
Whomever had claimed telepaths-and-or-empaths were not capable of lying had very obviously never made the aquaintance of Nephrite.
"See? That's exactly what I keep telling my brother," Amaranthe replied jovially. She was wearing her cultist garb today, as opposed to the street clothes from the last time the two of them had met. A long black gown and hooded cloak with ornate silver embroidery. From the looks of it she'd re-dyed her hair to ebony just recently, and she had rimmed here eyes with enough black kajal to rival any silent movie icon. In front of her chest she cradled a cardboard box with holes punched in from which rustling noises and faint squeaks could be heard. "Is he around?"
'You just missed him,' Nephrite told her, pointing at a portal which was neither the one Amon had left through nor the one Nell and Trivii had picked. Maybe she'd get lucky and that woman would just leave to *die*. It was *her* fault Amon had kicked her out and Athan was mad at her now.
"Really?" Amaranthe stepped closer to the portal Nephrite had indicated, rubble and shards crunching underneath the thick soles of her boots. While her choice of clothes was quite extravagant, her footwear was typically rather practical. She did a lot of walking on behalf of her sect. "What happened?" she asked, tilting her head as she curiously eyed the magical round.
She was utterly oblivious to the fact Nephrite silently had moved closer to her, eager for a chance to either trip or push her through.
Becca, fortunately, was not. The tall woman was quick to react and brought herself between the vengeful fiend and the young woman. She reached for shoulders of the latter to gently steer her towards Mystic, away from the portal. "I'm sure he will be more than happy to explain," she said, before she bent down to whisper something into Mystic's ear. "This is Amon's sister. Under no circumstances let her wander off into one of those portals," she warned him.
"You," she ordered Nephrite as she stretched back to her impressive full height, "are coming with me." She didn't know the full detail of what had happened to make Amon kick the Shadow from his household, that guy was as good-natured as they got. But she did know enough to be distinctly aware that leaving his crazy sister and that little green psychopath in close vicinity to each other was not a good idea. Great. Now she'd have to babysit when all she really wanted to do was to go and rescue her boss and smash in the skull of that creeper who'd taken her. Too bad that sword had disappeared.
'No way,' Nephrite spat and stubbornly crossed her arms.
Becca cast a glance at Mystic which clearly seemed to say: Dude, help me out here? Safeguarding a fairy if the didn't want to be guarded was hard enough of a feat as she'd come realize today. Nephrite was a Shadow. Intangible, unless she allowed for herself to be touched. Eh. She'd probably be better off carting Amy away instead of Nephrite. Her judgement really sucked today.

Mystic's mismatched eyes widened as he took in the scene before him. He sighed heavily after Becca leaned in to whisper/threaten him. Excellent. One more thing to worry about. He vaguely knew of Amon's sister. Mostly that Athan had banned her from the shop, and that she was as gullible and crazy as Nephrite was vindictive. There was a way to fix the situation he realized, but there was a chance that Nephrite would be very, very unhappy with him.
The elder Shadow stood to his full height and peered down over at Nephrite. "I think it would be best if you went with Becca," he said as he moved to wrap an arm around her shoulders. He smiled, showing off the fangs he seemed to have gleaned from his bond to Reyna. "I don't think you wanna be here when that guy comes back. Which is pretty likely," he said as his free hand opened a portal.
"This will take you directly to Reyna's house. I'm gonna be sending everyone there with the shards as they get back anyhow. Why don't y'all wait there instead?"
He paused momentarily to turn so that he was directly facing Nephrite with a smirk, if only because he knew something Neph did not. Despite his apparent evolution, he was more aligned with darkness than he ever had been before. He felt it in his bones the way fire burned in Reyna's. He could manipulate shadow with as much grace and ease as Athan if he so desired, and Nephrite was all shadow and darkness.

Nephrite returned the elder's gaze levelly and without blinking as she weighed his words. It was weird to actually hear him talk, see him breathe … Would she become like that eventually—she wondered—a real, living being?
She reached out to trail her fingers across Mystic's arm in an almost sensual way which belied her child-like appearance. Warm. Also, he practically radiated smugness, which made her deeply suspicious of him. Some sort of ace up his sleeve, though she had no idea as to what it might be. But after she'd misjudged Amon's and Athan's reactions so severely not too long ago she was inclined to be cautious.
Eventually she rolled her eyes in that super-annoyed way only a teenager could possibly pull off, and pulled away from the elder fiend. 'Whatever,' she said, deciding to err on the side of caution this time. Plus, Mystic was right. She did not want to be here when that redhead came back. 'You,' she said, pointing at Becca, 'come with me. She turned to look at Amaranthe. Well. She could stay here and make friends with the redhead creeper if he came back. She almost hoped he would, for that very reason. She had a very strong inkling he'd like her. She would have smirked, if she could have.
Becca gave the young fiend an incredulous look. She was waiting at the portal Mystic had opened for them with her arms crossed, and her tail swishing impatiently. Was that brat honest-to-goodness trying to order her around?! She decided Amon must have had the patience of a saint for putting up with her so long, and he was not exactly known to be the patient type. She knew he'd driven Bree absolutely insane in the early years of his apprenticeship.
"Sounds like a plan," she agreed with Mystic, before she mouthed a quiet 'thank you'. Perhaps that place had a working phone—her own had been fried by the lightning strike—so she could make a call or two to the company. Or at least some decent weaponry so that she could go and tackle one of those portals herself once she'd dropped off Nephrite.
"Please don't let her wander off," the half-troll implored once more and nodded towards Amaranthe before she headed through the portal, almost colliding with Nephrite as she did. Each of them was eager to make it through first as to not appear as if they were following the other one.
In the meanwhile the cultist had put down her cardboard box on the nearby bench and was about to honest-to-goodness poke one of the portals, her purple eyes filled with child-like curiosity. "What happened?" she asked innocently.

Mystic arched a brow at Nephrite. Her fingertips felt strangely silky against his skin. It was an odd sensation, and he exhaled in relief as she left alongside Becca. He had not wanted to force her through the portal, but he certainly would have had she left him no other choice.
He closed the portal to Reyna's house with a wave of one hand before reaching for Amy. "Uhh, let's not go through there," he said as he grasped her hand and tugged her away from the circle of magic she was about to poke.
"Long story short, a very bad man showed up, hurt Athan, sent shards of his emerald flying through all of these portals, and kidnapped a friend," Mystic replied in a matter of fact manner as he led Amy towards the bench. He was tired and wanted to sit, and he'd rather she joined him so he didn't have to chase her through another realm. He also didn't want to deal with Becca's wrath. Being punched in the face by Reyna had been bad enough. He didn't want to tangle with the troll, too.
"Eh... possibly two friends, actually," he added as an afterthought. Nephrite had mentioned that Ezra had kidnapped Hawk. He was still trying to fathom how that had been possible. He was a Seer, after all. Hadn't he foreseen that happening? It occurred to him that perhaps he had, and he had chosen to go along to prevent other outcomes. It seemed like the Hawk-type-thing to do.
"What are you doing out here, hm?" he asked as he playfully nudged her shoulder with his.

"I'm running errands for my brethren." Amaranthe sat down on the bench, carefully arranging the folds of her elaborate dress. With her pale skin she looked a little like a porcelain doll. She pondered the cardboard box between her and Mystic, and eventually lifted the lid for him to take a look at its contents which decidedly fluffy and overwhelmingly cute. There was about half a dozen bunnies inside.
"We ran out of sacrifices," the young woman cheerfully declared and put the lid back on, "so the high priestess sent me to secure new ones." She affectionately petted the box. "Then I saw the lightning, and since I knew the shop was somewhere around here I got curious." She slightly tilted her head in puzzlement as she gazed upon at the broken windows of the shop front. "So it was here after all," she repeated her earlier statement.
"What are you doing here?" she turned Mystic's question back at him, shifting to look at him with open fascination.
