She didn't know how she did it, but somehow she convinced the older student to follow her through the crowd and into the eye of the storm. There was still a press of students, but here near the center, it was eased somewhat. There was still a big open space, and here the older student might feel more comfortable.
This was a time for kin. This was a time for packs. This was a time for Grimm, and Ustule released his hand as he released hers. She gave him another of her tiny smiles, then stepped back to offer him space. She did not leave, although she was worried about her clumsy companion up in the tree. She hoped Sphery wasn't hurt, or hadn't fallen into the fountain--then again, a dead animal in the fountain would surely have drawn attention by now. Nonetheless, trees were not good for clumsy animals like Sphery...
But she stayed by the Grimm's side. It seemed that he needed some support, and if she could be that support, then she would be. There were other nervous Grimms, but this was her nervous Grimm, in an odd way. Not in a kissy way, either, just in a nice way. When he looked down at her, she gave him another smile of encouragement. These were important questions he had to ask. He should keep asking them.

Sara did indeed spot the thankful look that Crispin threw her way. Maybe after all of this was over, they could find his brother together and tell him all the news. Unless Crispin wanted some alone time with his brother, which would be more than reasonable. This was a big day for Grimms, and for those who had family, they would need time to fully absorb the import of today. She'd ask him before she made any assumptions.
The trials, it seemed, were exactly what they sounded like: coming-of-age rituals, of the kind that most races had had back in the very oldest of recorded history and the very wildest of conjecture. It was a classic thing, and somewhat primal--a tribal ritual that was very in-line from what she had assumed of the Grimm. But what Neptune said brought Melisara up short.
If Grimm life was pack-based...how could you resurrect an entire culture, most of which was dead? You couldn't. It was all dead, all lost, except for one single pack. And now they wanted to expand their numbers. Turn all Grimm into their pack. Was that...actually...fair?
She looked over at Neptune and gave him a solid nod. He had brought up a good point. She made a mental note to talk to the other junior--he sounded like he had some interesting ideas. Why hadn't she seen him around Eldritch?
Myles shrugged. "I...honestly don't know. I mean we've got schools and stuff up in the Nixie cities, so why would you need to keep going here?" wait would that upset them? It was true though. There were schools in the Nixie towns and cities. Why would they want to keep coming here if they could go to school there? He frowned, this was much harder than Kestrel had made it sound. Just convince them how great home was, and things would fall into place, only...it didn't seem to be working as well as Kestrel had said it would. They just kept asking more questions...and hard ones at that.
Least this question was easy! "Well we live all over Nixie territory, some on the floating towns and some in the cities. We get together for hunts and rituals and ceremonial stuff. Kestrel leads the spiritual stuff, cuz that's his job. My mom is one of the normal hunt leaders though! She single-handedly takes on sharks and crocodiles!" he grinned talking about his adopted Grimm parent. He loved his mom, she was just everything a Grimm should be. He reached under his shirt and pulled out a necklace with a large crocodile tooth on it. "This is from one of her kills. She gave one to my little brother too." he said eagerly.
He slipped the necklace back under his shirt and nodded. "Yeah, without a trial you just aren't really an adult. The better you do the more prestige you'll have within the tribe, and the better your chances of getting the attention of someone you want to be mates with."
He kicked his legs a bit sending out little sprays of water with each movement, the action betraying the fact he wasn't that much older than a lot of the crowd. "It's possible, we don't have a lot of pale colored Grimm though. Lots of us are like Kestrel and Mink. Browns and tans and stuff. I'm actually not from their tribe, I just look like I fit in. I'm not even sure what tribe I'm from actually. I was just in a bunch of stones from a couple different tribes that they collected on their way to Nixie territory." he sighed. "I dunno about family for all of you though. I guess you could be related to someone up North, but it wouldn't be like your parents or anything. Probably be another sibling or something like that. I'm not related to my parents, my brother and I were adopted by them."
he smiled, another easy question. "Exactly. The Shaman's in charge, and then they've got one or two mates who are their Alphas to help them make decisions and enforce their rule. It's up to the Shaman how many mates they want."

That... wasn't really what he was hoping for. This kid didn't really seem to know much of anything after all. While he did desperately want to know more about his people, he didn't want to be stuck there in some strange place. He'd already had a hard enough time adjusting to the academy! Some might even say he wasn't fully adjusted, he hadn't made any friends in the few months he'd been around, and barely made appearances anywhere outside of his dorm or the library.
The nod from the baphomet girl caught his good eye. He blinked, then nodded back thinking it was the appropriate thing to do. Was it? He wasn't really sure. In the process of trying to remember if that was some kind of baphomet cultural thing he ended up squinting a little and tilted his head to the side... No, it probably wasn't... oh, he was making a fool of himself. He straightened back up again, ears fully perked. Hopefully she wouldn't laugh at him or something... but then again she'd only been nice to the others the entire time she was here. That hadn't escaped his watch.
"So.. um... it kind of doesn't really... sound like we'd get a lot of benefit from going...... I mean... if you don't even know if we can come back...." Though really that didn't make any sense... not being allowed to leave somewhere was basically like a prison, wasn't it? Even the academy had field trips. He shrank down a little, suddenly beginning to feel a familiar sensation of being trapped with nowhere to go. "I--.... I don't think it's... v-very fair to um... t--take people and not let them go back... um... if they want to-- imeanthat'skindofimprisonment...." And there he went again, smooshing his words together in an effort to get them all out before he lost the ability to speak. Anxiously he wrung his hands, tail curling even further between his legs. This was not turning out to be like he had hoped it would...
Iah continued listening to everyone around him. Content to sit here with Amy, although his hand did slightly tighten at the mention of the new comers coming to take the grimm away. Amy wouldn’t leave with them right? But who was he to stop her if she really wanted to go. It was her culture and her history and she deserved to know. Yet at the same time amy didn’t look like she wanted to leap up and go running off to join the new Grimm either. All he could do was be supportive.
His heart did go out when Myles explained what might have happened to the other grimm. Whole packs and ways of life and culture where just wiped out. Did he need to be more worried when Amy got a cold? However he didn’t want to be overbearing either. Ugh what was the balance supposed to be… and he was supposed to be keeping watch just in case Amy asked about something. He didn’t have time to be lost in his thoughts.

The small demon freshling made her way through the halls to where the crowd had apparently gathered. She and Auren had been in their room working on a coloring assignment for their math class when there had been this loud ruckus. The noise from outside their room had been enough to get them to peek out and wonder what was going on. Some well placed questions had filled them in on the Grimm situation and some sort of fish kind of people. Pepper wasn't really that interested in the stuff with the Grimms, they could figure that out on their own, but the, um, Nixie? Those were what she was interested in.
Pulling Auren by hand through the crowd, she managed to squirm so they were in the courtyard where it looked like a crowd had gathered around two juniors who were in the fountain??? The demon made a face at that, but they managed to catch the last of what the boy grimm had been saying. It was like a history lesson! "How do you guys pick who gets to be shaman then? What're they shaman for?" she piped up once there was a suitable gap for her to speak. Some of their lessons had covered the Grimm stuff they knew, but there wasn't very much on it. "What about the, Ni--Nixie, do they have the same thing?" There was a slight stumble over the unfamiliar word, but she managed to pronounce it right. They were what she was curious about, and she studied the girl with the fins with interest.
Zahneel had been forced to pinch herself several times already throughout the day. There were Grimm at the Academy! Strange Grimm with stranger companions and they were part of a Pack. Still, the older of the two males frightened the girl a little with his intensity. So it had been a natural choice to follow the younger of the emissaries as they'd gone off.
When she'd finally caught up to them, the crowd around them was almost enough to make her reconsider her choices. Except she saw a face or two that she recognized. And one face in particular that made her smile. Creeping up to where Tobias stood, she brushed his shoulder with her claws gently as she listened to the two travelers. She wasn't sure she liked the idea of trials, but her inner historian was drinking up the information.
"Please," she spoke up, surprising herself. "We've lost so much in the way of knowledge. Do your people have any books or histories from the other packs?"

A frown crossed Crispin's face as the other added more as he questioned him. This sounded a little weird to him the more he found out, and he wasn't exactly sure what to make of it. What if he liked it here more than there and wasn't allowed back. "Uh. I mean, I dunno. Cuz what if someone I'm friends with doesn't come or somethin'.."He added gently, pursing his lips as he took a small step back.
Everything he was saying mostly sounded pretty cool on one hand they had hunting clearly and a lot of structure and d..dienamic? What was that word, he couldn't remember off the top of his head. What had been covered in school wasn't much, he agreed when a girl's voice came asking more about the weird new words. Another about history books, wouldn't that be a real treat? He'd try his best to read what he could; it was a slow going for the young wolf. His mind turned over the details. If you had to be a mate to a shaman in order to be a alpha that sounded complicated, and wasn't something he was too keen on.
The grimm raised his hands from their resting position to cross the sleeved arms over his chest. "I mean some of it makes sense, I guess?" He pulled at his sleeved teeth biting at the end of the fabric as the other finished answering pulling back a few steps as more voices rose from the gathering.
Well, at least his questions had sorta been answered, finding of course he only had more now. For now he'd wait till anyone else wanted to contributed, he wasn't sure what else to bring up right at that moment. Maybe something else would come up, he was feeling overwhelmed by everything going on, but hid it behind a smile and the occasional tail flick.

His face scrunched as Neptune kept speaking and the answers were given. There it was, his heart. It slammed violently against his chest, crumbling each time. This wasn't what he had dreamed of. What he had wanted. He had thought knowledge would come with freedom, and yet, here he was, being told there might not be a way back. For a second he faltered, cringing into himself. Where was Yue? She'd protect him. She wouldn't let them keep him! And Keegan, he'd make sure he'd return, too.
.... Right?
What if Keegan wanted to go? What if he wanted to stay? He was full-Grimm too, and it took that very minute for Tobias to realize that nothing was holding Keegan back. He could leave, forever, and Tobias would have to make a choice between the two he loved the most; return or stay. No. No he didn't want to think about it! They would have to let them go home! Ava wouldn't allow otherwise...
His eyes glanced back down at the freshling, having crumbled back into his trembling state from before. Interlocking his claws together, the boy flicked his gaze back up to Neptune, his straight ear pulling back. He wasn't strong, either. The Grimm needed to perform well in trials, and Tobias was... not weak per say. He was actually rather strong for someone his age, true, but he didn't have the mental strength to back it up. His fear often left him unable to perform brave tasks. Was the Grimm life all about power? Was the life he wanted to be a part of so bad all his life not meant for him?
No. This couldn't be!
"W-what if we aren't strong?" He asked, tail twitching in agitation. "What if we fail the trials? Do we have a place?" His nails tapped against one another, tail slowly flicking between his legs like a frightened pup. Because he was. His entire meaning for living was turning out... wrong. His life was upturning, and he didn't know how to land on his feet. Panic. He was panicking. Where was Keegan? Where was Yue? Someone, anyone, help him!
He jumped when someone brushed against him, head snapping and shoulders immediately lowering when he spotted Zahneel. Relief spread through him, his tail lowering. Oh. A familiar face. Someone his age. For a second, he seemed calmer, even if his heart was pounding. Yes! Books! Histories! He needed those! He turned to view Myles, hoping he'd say "yes".

She had been listening.
The answers provided weren't necessarily the ones needed to convince an entire race to abandon their home and accept a new one. She was sure the groups attempt to reclaim their people would falter, and yet a nasty feeling whirled in her stomach. Would they accept no? How long had they suffered, not knowing there were Grimm in the world outside of their tribe? How frightening had it been? Would she accept no? Her tail flicked, a hand squeezing Iah's.
And the trials. In this place you had to prove your worth. The academy had never asked for her to do so. They had accepted her, disability and all, no matter her strengths and weaknesses. They believed in her, and Amy wasn't about to turn her back on her only home. On her family. Standing, she released Iah's hand and used her walking stick to approach, pausing when it tapped against the heel of another Nightmare. Good, she was close enough. With a soft apology towards the Nightmare she had tapped, the blind Grimm raised her head, listening until the questions had ceased for a second.
"And what of the disabled?" She called, eyes blankly staring forward. "Do we have a place amongst your kind? The trials seem to indicate a need to prove worth. What is our worth? Why should those disabled leave the academy to a place that might judge us and turn us aside, should we not achieve the goals put out for us?" For a second she regret releasing Iah's hand, but she stood strong. She had to. This was a time for her people, and she'd never forgive herself if she stood at the edge and didn't participate.

Arden could only watch as the crowd grew, allowing himself to be pushed towards the back as he had no immediate questions. The Chimera felt like he really had no right to an opinion in this situation, but it bothered him slightly that Myles had suggested the Academy students should leave just because cities with schools existed elsewhere. All of the races had their own cities and schools. The point of the Academy was part re-populating, and to take care of all the extra children. So few of the students had a genuine knowledge of their race, unless they came from them. He could only rub his forehead.
"I understand Grimm here have nothing of their race to live by, but most of the others only know stories and guidelines. Most of the Academy is from orphaned stones," he could only sigh in frustration but it was mostly from the confusion in his head. "Giving knowledge is one thing, but taking people to live in a pack is not fair to any of the other cache orphans here who have to grow up and get tossed into the real world without any experience of their race." He could only frown heavily, folding his arms tighter. He wasn't sure anyone had even heard him, mostly mumbling to himself over the crowd.

"Well there are some records of different tribes and if they had any special markings or coloration. Some of the stones up north they knew exactly where they came from. It's only some they found later or were in a hurry no one marked it down or remembered." he paused, biting his lower lip. "Well...it would be more than you get here?" that wasn't a good answer and he didn't know what to do. "You'd learn to hunt, and about the gods and ancestral spirits, how to be part of a pack, you'd have...a place to belong...?" slight amounts of panic. He glanced down at Athena for reassurance. He was starting to feel like he'd gone outside the City without a breath charm, and the surface was a long way away.
Myles looked over the crowd, taking in the Grimm faces. "But you'd be home! You'd be with us! You might not have any blood family, but you'd have a whole tribe of people who would overjoyed to see you, to love you and accept you, teach you the old ways..." definitely drowning now.
The mint colored demon at least offered some relief. He knew how to answer that. "Generally the current Shaman picks his successor. You've got to be good at magic in order to be a Shaman. It's not just something anyone can do. Shaman's are in charge of the whole tribe." he said simply for the child. Couldn't there be more questions like that?
He looked over at the dark Grimm who'd wormed her way forward. She looked like she'd fit right in at home. "We have some records and stuff. Most history is passed orally, but the Nixie kind of encouraged us to start writing it down. It's just a big collection of unorganized notes for the most part. A lot of the older members of our tribe have died in the last few years...so we try to get as much information from them as possible, but sometimes they don't remember things right anymore." he frowned.
He looked back over at the orange Grimm. "You set your own trial, so you shouldn't fail something you picked out to do? I mean it's gotta be a big thing! Can't just be anything. So like if you wanted to...I dunno make your trial about food cuz you like cooking, you better be prepared to cook your tail off for like half the tribe and their Nixie friends, and Nixie are likely to bring their friends too! So like a whole town or half a city by the end of it." He laughed a bit then realized that no one but Athena would really understand what a party in one of the towns or cities really meant. It wasn't just for you and your friends, it was for...well Everyone, they be your neighbors or from across town. There really wasn't such a thing as a private party in Nixie territory.
He found the voice of the black Grimm with white hair. Disabled...? "Ah...well..." he looked from side to side. What would Kestrel think of someone who wasn't whole? Deep down he had to admit, probably nothing nice. "I'm sure they'd find something you could do..." Athena help.
He looked over at the Chimera? Yeah, that seemed right. "Ah...umm..." he hadn't thought about that. In fact he hadn't really known that. He wondered if Ryuuichi had known that. Old man was crafty after all, he might have not told Kestrel that JUST in order to have leverage. Sounded like something Athena's dad would do.
Athena simply listened in, occasionally nodding to Myles, slightly confused why he kept looking at her. She wasn't a Grimm! She didn't know what he wanted her to say! However, there were a few questions she knew she could jump in on!
Smiling to the small cool-colored freshling she nodded. "We kind of do! We elect elders to be our leaders. My dad is the elder of my city! He doesn't really do rituals and things though...he's mostly there for guidance since...well..." She quieted down a little, feeling sad again. She wasn't quite sure she wanted to talk about that yet, not after now much he made it seem like it was a good thing that she was gone....
However, the talk of the disabled brought up her attention again. "You'll definitely have a place! If you want to go and Kestrel says no then....Then I'll take you! There's a place for everyone in our city! My Dad can't walk very well anymore he...." She paused, fussing with her hands, "He got attacked trying to save my mom..." Earfins drooping, she shut up for a while, trying so hard to keep the tears from coming up again and to hide how she felt...

The next few minutes were very hectic, as if a floodgate had just been blasted open. Melisara was having trouble figuring out where the questions came from--both literally and figuratively. It must have been the question about whether or not they could stay. But it seemed now that the idea they might not be able to choose had caused an eruption of titanic proportions. She could feel the will of the crowd turn. And they all had such valid points, too!
If Grimm culture was based on strength...well, not everyone valued strength. And what did they think of the blind? Of the disabled? Melisara frowned. From Myles's tone of voice, this conversation was not going the way he thought it would. And as the outpourings of opinion came in from the Grimms all around, Melisara began to see the flaw in his reasoning: he was talking about his own home as if it was everyone's home. As if everyone was meant to feel as comfy-cozy in his homeland as he did. But they'd grown up here--in a different climate and a different culture. How would she feel if she'd been told that she was living her life as a Baphomet wrong? That she had to go to a strange place and live her life amongst a people with different values, values that were the "right" values?
But it was the voice of the Chimera from the back of the crowd that really nailed it home. "Ah think we've all got valid points," she said softly. Now was the time to float her idea. "Mahls, how would yer people feel about settin' up a school nearbah where Grimms could learn about their culture? Without havin' to leave their home." She sat up straighter as she warmed to the subject. "It ain't fair askin' folks to choose between their people and their home. And in this world we're livin' in, post-war, we gotta bring our cultures with us everywhere we go. We cain't just keep a culture in one place only. We gotta let the culture flourish everywhere it can. Let the Grimm at the Academy make their own packs. Let 'em make their own trahuhls rahght here! Lettin' folks learn their culture at Academy without havin' to move to a new place is one o' the oldest and fahnest traditions of the Academic Society of Asphodel. 'Smatter o'fact, it's the entahr reason the school was founded in the first place! T' give the orphans a home to live and learn an' build their lahves." She smiled at him and at the students all around. It was a good plan, in her opinion. It solved everyone's problems!
She shot an extra smile at the odd-eyed Grimm, the one who had tilted his head at her. He seemed rather nervous. She made a note to track him down later.

I mentioned your point, so I thought I'd quote you as well.
Amy's question sparked more interest in him. He hadn't thought to ask about that... He was managing okay at the academy, but that was with a lot of help and special tutoring to get him caught up to the others. He frowned at the answer... Myles didn't seem sure about it, at least not sure enough that he'd be comfortable with committing. And he didn't seem to acknowledge that keeping people somewhere against their will was not okay.
He turned his head enough to look at Athena with his good eye, ears perked forward to listen to what she was saying... The frown deepened even more. "But, um.... you're asking us to come live with uh... the other grimm. Why would... why would we leave here to um... go live with people that aren't really.... our people...? He fidgeted nervously, pausing to compose himself to speak more, "I... I just don't um... I don't really.. think it's a good deal... for um... those of us who are... disabled or.. um.. declining in health... or umyouknowmaybegettingtobemoredisabled...." He chewed at his lip, hoping maybe this question at least would be answered or maybe acknowledged...
He quieted down as Melisara spoke, once again turning his head to get a clear look at hear, ears perked forward to listen intently... She had a point. A very good point. He might be more willing to leave the safety of the school if the place he was going was nearby and he was free to come and go as he pleased. He managed a small smile and nodded again. "Sh--she has um... a really g-good point... Wh-why not um... just have someone come here...? And then um... when we know more about what it's like... we could decide to leave or stay.. like all of the other orphans.... since um... theyhaveplacestogoto...." He'd have to find out who that baphomet girl was, she seemed nice... and reasonable...
