Anyway, you think D&D Characters are boring, then lets just super simplify! Spyder had a point. Everybody knows humans and everyone knows what Robots are. Lets just stick with that. Super easy. No silly tails. No Dragon blood. No Hobbits. Just straight up Humans and Robots.
Sounds blandly fun...

I know. It's hard to make everyone happy. I know at least a couple of us are on board for the D&D Characters. Moon wants wacky made up stuff and Spyder wants robots and Humans. I mean what do YOU want, it is your deal. Whatever you think is what we all should settle for.
I'm VERY pro fantasy races. If there's flora and fauna diversity IRL, why not racial diversity in a fantasy setting? More lively. Of course, my opinion is one opinion. Everyone's opinion matters.

well you can do that but give me a better reason then "their the Universal D&D races" that's all I ask. (My Idea come's from all the races coming from space first.)

If you want robots, just add warforged, and alter their appearence to bronze, steel, or brass.
Im designing a setting for a guild I may make, if I get my friend to help.
The setting has three small kingdoms, the hummans, halflings, and dwarves are the dominant of the true first kingdoms, but the other kingdom is elves and fey's.Large war beast roam the forest, while some mages come to this kingdom for the ancient lost arcane ruins of a old warrior race of elves now cursed by the old masters. The elves see this as minor curiosity of man, since their life span is short and let them die in the maw of the beast who roam the ruins, weather they be dead or alive. There are small establishments of barbarians and colonies of the two kingdoms roaming toward the wild lands of the elven kingdom. Now the elves have broken into clans, seperating the elven races taking their own domains. The high elves have left for their acadamies away from toils and the pressing of humans. The only ones left in the forest are the sylvan elves and the wild barbaric elves.

After the constant toils of war, between the two kingdoms for the land of the wild and elves, one of the kingdoms grew corrupt, and asked for their wizards to conjur a infernal or abyssmal creature to strike a deal. This ended into the tiefling.Amongst the barbarians and dwarves fighting the goblinoids away from the dwarven halls, and barbarian ancestral land. The orcs found new master's under the Tieflings, and their dark magic of chaos. As their taint spread the gnolls of the wild began to enter dark rituals giving their mortality for power, giving them a mutation of demonic horns, and larger size of dire beast. Not all Gnolls took part in the rituals, those who didnt ran to the sylvan elves to act as soldiers for the primal ways.

The kingdom who did not act out their greed, stayed pure.Their king Leo called apon the dwarves and the kin to the earth the gnomes and asked them to construct warriors who have their own mind in combat, now the Warforged were born.King Leo, has now decreed that a contract shall be maded to ally with the elves to protect the land of the elves.

Now that the kingdom of demonic influence has spread, their gods of destruction and slaughter have risen to power. The drows and deunger stayed away from the war until the forces of the abyss tried to desroy the goddess lolth, now they shall defend their goddess.

well Freedom the wolf, that's petty cool. If I was part of that I would so make a chaotic neutral necromancer with a big a** scythe twisted

But that's what I'm talking about, a good back story to explain why things are the way they are. who's who, and why one group dose not hang out with another. Hmm maybe I'll do that so to at least explain why my guys would work.

And that's what this thread is for, to make stuff make sense.

I was thinking humans, gnomes and dwarves are allied, and all three rule a pretty big piece of land in the middle of one of the continents. This kingdom is in war with this other kingdom, which has been going fer years now. Add to this the increase in piracy, and the world is pretty chaotic.

Keith Valken Lionheart: not a bad Idea, and would work. the only problem would be military convoys, a waring nation dose not care for their stuff being taken away.

Freedom the wolf: naw I would stick to neutral, so I can do random s**t anytime I wanted, but would still not be evil.

Ok here’s my take on a back story with my races.

Thing take place in one of three grand nations, the Humans nation, populated by humans and tailed humans the Deneb. The humans are in constant political conflict with the Drow nation, the two nations have been in a constant war like state snits the two nations were founded. The thred that keeps them from falling into a full out war is the third nation owned by the Morrocks, with their political, and military powered they keep the other two nations in an unsteady peace, wile benefiting from the control of trade between the two.

The first two nations where founded after the Humans and Drows fell from the sky over a 1000 years ago. The two space faring races were at war with each other over recourses, and space for their increasing populations. The discovery of a suitable world was kept secret by both sides do to political maneuvers, and support for the war. The ships that arrived at the world almost immediately began to fight each other over the world, ignoring a damaged ancient ship in orbit around the planet. during the battle between the small fleets, both sides were attacked by the unknown ship, that’s weapons far outclassed their own. In a combined assault of the remaining ships on the unknown ship the Humans and Drows where victories, but the damage was done, and the remaining ships fell into the planet.

The Humans Fell into the northwestern land, where the Drow fell to the southern land, separating the two with high jagged mountains. A third race was discovered in the southern jungle, originally thought to be primitive, the Morrocks grasp on technology at times exceeded the two other races. Over time much of the advanst technology fell into disrepairs, and the knowledge of how to make them had been lost, to be replaced with steam based tech.

The Patriarchal Humans, and the Matriarchal Drows conflict spurs from cultural misunderstanding, and a history of violence between the two. Both hold a dislike for the Morrocks and their current control of the political strings in both nations. The triad city of Rivercross, the Trading capital of the Morrock nation, is also the center of the world’s political conflict, as all sides pick at the ruling Morrock house.

Within the Human Nation, much conflict between political parties is often pushed aside by the ruling aristocrats, though the Deneb’s party the Steam Wolf party threatens to dethrone the Lion party though political maneuvers, and underhanded attacks and assassinations. At the same time, the unsteady peace with increased trade has lead to a rise in pirates, as former solders and other outcasts pray on airships that are left undefended. Independent groups are also on the rise, as the demand for “privet investigator” and mercenary grow more and more in demand.

I think that should do it for me. Can any of you beat that!

That's pretty neat. This is what I came up with:

The world was divided. Several kingdoms freckled the land. The Vast The Empire of Bael Turath was one of the greatest in all of humankind's history. The Nobles lusted after power and loathed the other races of the outlands. They employed the most brilliant minds to harness a new power, Steam. The human nobles had a lust for the new power. They used it to crumble the surrounding cities. Banishing the Elves and kender from their lands and pushing their kingdom further and further. The good common people revolted and rescued the enslaved men of science, though they couldn't protect the secrets of the steam. They Escaped the terrible city. Corruption and greed lead the people of the Empire to ruin. What clawed their way out of the ashes was not human. Demons merged with man's black heart, Thus began the race known as the Tiefling.

At this time a dark cloud appeared in the west and a great city began to take shape.

Many generations passed and the Tieflings were disgusted with what they had become. Conflicted they left the place that reminded them of their ancestors corruption. They wondered aimlessly for years, ashamed and homeless.

A mysterious city so large as it could be seen from miles off stood in the West. Looming and foul the city struck fear into the hearts of all who viewed it. Each morning its position was a bit different, it seemed to hover above the land.

After the Empire of Bael Turath was abandoned by the tiefling race, it became inhabited by the kender. They called the place Lockpick. You see, they couldn't decide what to call the city... but after one of them pulled a lock picking device out of their pocket, the name stuck. They filled their homes with things "borrowed" from abandoned buildings around the city. The Kender had a habit of finding things that have dropped into their pouches by accident, picking things up in the streets, finding "junk", and generally getting things that belong to other people. This habit was justified by their enormous natural curiosity. Lockpick soon became a refuge for the... well for lack of a better term, Scum of the lands. Rebellious Tieflings called it their home. Brass con-men crowded the once empty streets. Humans who sought vice lined the alleys behind each pub. A breath of life was blown into the corrupt city and shops and homes were filled after several years. They began to trade with the humans of Avenglen.

Some people came to Lockpick from the mysterious city. No one liked these strangers, even the playful and kind hearted Kender disliked them. They were unusual and silent. Their skin was steely grey and their stench could clear a room.

The Humans settled in a colony to the East, They called Avenglen. Grassy and warm, the land was well suited for them. Those who once served the evil nobles, now used their knowledge to better the lives of others.

They built men of steal and brass. Men who walked and talked and behaved much like a human. With a mixture of magic and science These robotic men were given souls. They had personalities and feelings and soon became a race of their own. The robots continued their human father's legacy. Becoming the best scientific mines in the world they built a massive empire. They created what no other race could, a peaceful place they lovingly called Utopia. A city they built high in the mountains of the north.

Today the mysterious city has disappeared, along with the grey skinned strangers who wondered the streets at night. Panic has struck the people, and the black cloud covers the sun...

I tried to make it kind of like the middle ages, and that steam power was only just being discovered. Also the idea of flight is brand new and no one has been able to do it yet, other then the mysterious city. I also wanted to leave room for other peoples ideas for races and origins. I just set out a couple that I liked. I wanted some ideas about who the main enemy should be also. I wanted the flying city to be the origin of the evil race.

Perhaps now would be a good time to make a sticky thred for character profliles. We may not be able to agree on races just yet, but I'm sure we all have in mind what kind of character we'd like to play.

that was great biggrin nice work, on the back story
PostPosted: Sat Apr 25, 2009 6:43 pm

oh and in my back story the Deneb are the descendants of Genome solders, Created to fight in wars as front line solders. the ears and tail were placed in there genetic code so that they could be easily separated from other "normal" humans. But after the crass that order broke down and the Deneb began to mingle with regular humans. much of the traits of the Deneb are in the human population now, so the name Deneb only means tailed human. despite that fact there is still allot of racism towards the Deneb as a servant race. Do to that, allot of Deneb are outcasts, even pirates.

(that means if you want to be a pirate with political connections, go Deneb, as their group, even their politicians, support attacks on the Human aristocracy.)

Keith Valken Lionheart: not a bad Idea, and would work. the only problem would be military convoys, a waring nation dose not care for their stuff being taken away.

Are you sure about that? When soldiers have been on the frontlines fer a while now, needing ammo, food and supplies, a pirate raid on supply convoys would lead to low morale, mutiny, etc.

well ya, but what I'm talking about is that the convoy would have military support. One thing I know about pirates is that they don't like to mess with the military. they try to take out an victim that they can outmaneuver, and over power, they would not be able to do that if it's a military convoy, or is supported by the military.
