The term hikkikomori has been around for a long time. Just that SZS made it popular biggrin

XDD This I know...They're everywhere. SZB just made me laugh at the whole concept that is in fact quite sad. But really, my culture doesn't really have shut-ins... o_O Or does it?

I don't think so... some may argue that WoW addicts could qualify, but I personally don't think so...
I also don't personally play WoW, but that's another story.

And then there's Student Council, Knowledge Bowl, and Math Team...but those aren't really 'sports' as defined by everybody else

Guhhhhhh the water makes everything slow. Hard to throw a decent punch underwater.
I like the air better. I just never can stay up that long XDDDD Not that I want to fly in a plane or anything (although I really do like airplane food for some really odd reason)
Mab has one normal club activity and 3 super nerd ones. gonk

It was only hard for me because of the very reasons that lead me to become one:
I had no motivation to do anything, not even socialize. I had a stupid crippling fear of trusting people because I was scared they were going to hurt me. I became generally repulsed by people. It wasn't a hate or anything, I could still accept a person for being them, but the thought of having to socialize and make a name and identity for myself with the chance of being stomped into the ground again made me particularly angry. Anger turns to loathing. Loathing turns to Spite. Spite turned into indifference, which then turned into sloth. It was much easier to interact with the world behind the shelter of the internet, and I had video games and computers to keep me all the company I needed.
It's not a good thing, really. Everyone's reasons for shutting themselves in are different from person to person, though. Mine started from when I was cheated on and dumped after 8 years of being in a relationship. That same year two of my good friends passed away, so I wasn't too much of a happy camper then.
It was hard to recover because I just didn't want to do anything for myself. It's like existence-purgatory. I don't want to end it, but I don't want to do anything. Neither option seemed worth it.
I forced myself out of it though because I became sick of living like this, and a stupid drive to want to do better in my life than my parents and my now-'enemies'. I'm starting to take an interest in photography, especially since I'm leaving Hawaii in a year. Documenting things has proven fun, and it's a good excuse to kick my a** out the door. Even now, though, I have difficulty mustering up the drive to get out there, even if I want to. It sounds stupid, but it's true.

Aru's reason is sooooo much more serious than mine.
I'm just a shut-in cos' I can't be bothered to leave the house.

wow...that's just terrible...no drive to do anything...
@Bapp (on another note): Water doesn't slow everything down if you hit correctly. if you learn how, you can throw even more deadly kicks, and they're usually hard to avoid too!
yes, I prefer to be a nerd...popularity and coolness are overrated anyway

I don't see how hits underwater can be more deadly that hits on land. If you can hit underwater hard, that means you can hit people above water harder.
