i've got half a mind to launch into a sonic v mario debate, explaining/exploring why and how mario would be bone'd if he had to actually step in a ring with sonic.
...i'm bored. let's do it.

No battle here.
Sonic'd run circles around Mario's pudgy plumber a**. And he's got sheer momentum on his side, etc.
Anyway, sleep time.

i'm basing this on my knowledge of mario, which extends canonically into mario 64. i'll attempt to touch on sunshine, though i don't know what more, other than the super soaker, is to note of his abilities there.
natural weapons and normal clothes [without powerups or assistance, or special button presses
mario's feet are formidable, being able to stomp out and/or smash anything within reason. His head's hard as well, having the ability to dislocate bricks before they drop back into place, and anything else he thumps makes a loud enough impact sound... that, with no stun or slowing from mario other than lost forward momentum if the headbutt was done from a run. his clothes offer him no advantage, since it's been accepted that it's mario's head and feet, not hat and boots, that offer him his abilities.
sonic's speed sees him outrunning his enemies and their attacks. this isn't considered 'special' because more than two seconds of steady walking will make him run (since he simply hates walking). his shoes protect his feet from his own fast feet and the heat friction, allowing him to maintain his speeds for a rather long time. sonic's attack creates less impact against surfaces, but his spines apparently have the ability to rip through steel and whatever else it is robotnik coats his badniks in. only the most sturdy of enemies make sonic bounce off, but not without the damage done. his spinning motion may be the secret to this.

okay.
i AM going to need correction on this, since nobody sticks with mario, as opposed to super mario so it's hard to remember what he can do. i'm also unwilling nevermind, i just opened zsnes.
special attacks not requiring powerups
mario's twisting jump keeps him from danger below, allowing him to bounce harmlessly on spiked beetles. his triplejump gives him good height, allowing him to take temporary air when there is trouble on the ground. his backflip serves much the same purpose, evasion. according to gb donkey kong, he can walk on his hands and bounce harmful objects off his feet.
sonic has many more offensive abilities available to him. rolling spin, spin dash, stationary charged dash, and flash spin. all based on him spinning or moving very fast. rolling spin allows him to fall into his momentum and move even faster along slopes, while still rolling through anything that doesn't have a spike sticking out at him. spin dash protects him as he readies for a speedy exit, sending him off into a standing position-- from which he can roll spin. the stationary dash was needed, i believe, to time travel... it offered increased speed as well, i believe. (gamegear versions add and delete abilities to compensate; i'm trying not to mix). the last one adding a wave of energy around him to hit targets he doesn't actually want to touch. It had the same power as his physically spinning through an enemy, unless someone actually went and counted boss hits.

o.0 I though everyone already knew that Sonic would steam roll all over Mario...*chuckles* I didn't believe anyone would need more than the knowledge that Mario is slow and Sonic is super fast to make that decision
*pokes around in the dark corners for Morrow* come out-come out wherever you are! 4laugh heart

you'd think that, but people maintain that mario has a trick up his sleeve somewhere through his many gadgets, experiences, and costume changes. which was about to be the next post, until i turned to NOVA and saw a "secrets of the samurai sword" thing on and ended up watching that, as well as fielding a random im.
and now it's 5:00, and though i know i can continue geeking, it's pretty established that mario wouldn't stand much of a chance. i'll just respond to people who say "but mario can--"
