Yeah, I'm sure you get a whole lot more how's-your-father from your wife thanks to that, but unless he started the assault, a civil suit pretty much goes in his favor.
What you should have done is give him a doped drink and then kicked him out shortly afterward so that he would have dozed off on the road and gotten himself injured instead.
Keep fighting the good fight, bro.

Well he shoved her and that, naturally, got me very protective. When I stepped in to get in between them he shoved me, which prompted me to violently shove him back. He swung, I blocked, and proceeded to beat the holy hell out of him.

Ah, well in that case it's entirely justified. As long as you can put a reasonable doubt in his story, no problem.

I'm very good at making me sound like the good guy, even when it's very obvious I'm not. xd

You'll be fine as long as you avoid throwing in "I would have happily beat him up even if it wasn't his fault" with your response.
Hard as it may be, not lobbing insults at him would help too.

I drove from Texas to Oregon for some leave and to get married. Now that I've spent time with my family, got married, and spent time with my new wife I'm on my way back to Texas...2,200 miles.
