{ Kyle : Station of Awakening }

Kyle gave a sympathetic shrug before he stared off into the mists, contemplating.

It would, inevitably, come to light. Both to his friends, and to this... shard.

His smile became more pensive than mirthful, but remained a smile all the same. There really wasn't any choice in the matter. He couldn't string him along, not when he seemed so... sincere.

"Your name, as far as I or any of my friends know, is Louis," he began, still staring off. "And I'll be honest with you. Yours is an... interesting history. One I don't think you'll like, though of course I only have my side of it. Still, it's something I think you need to know."

"It's at this point I guess I provide the eons-long debated choices," he continued. "You can stay blissfully ignorant, or thoroughly informed, regardless of the outcome. Your decision. But so you know, neither option revokes your welcome."

"So, you know me," he looked at Kyle, his expression shifting slowly downward as his companion continued, "I see... if you say it that way," the boy looked to the side again, contemplating his answer, "I guess there isn't much of a choice if you think about it. I don't mind. Tell me everything you know, please don't leave me in the dark."

{ ATE : The Unexpected Guests : 11 }
{ Kyle : Station of Awakening }

"I know who you were," he said, making a point to correct him. "We are a summation of both nature and nurture, of inner thoughts and outer actions. If you truly don't remember anything, then... consider this a second chance. Don't let what I'm about to tell you change who you are and want to be now, because then the previous you would still have a hold of you and your life."

"So, getting started. First off, you, like me and some of my friends, are from a world called Earth," he began, and by waving his hand slightly he summoned a screen in front of them, outlined in the same material as the mosaic they sat on. The screen immediately lit up with a large image of the planet. "It was home to over seven billion people. It... wasn't perfect, by any means. But it was home. Then the forces of Darkness destroyed it in the span of minutes."

The planet grew covered with black clouds, all furiously spreading and consuming. Images flashed of Shadows and Neoshadows invading the planet, until finally the screen went dark.

"We are a handful of survivors. If there are more, we don't know where they are," he explained. "What we do know is we've been thrust into a universe of magic and monsters, and each of us have been given abilities with which to fight. My friends and I fight for the side of light against the forces of darkness, both hoping to help this world and maybe restore ours."

"When we first met you... well, you looked like this," he said. The screen immediately flickered to show an image of Louis in his Scion Armor, just as he was in Halloween Town. "If that looks even the least bit ominous, it's for good reason. Because you immediately split the group up and attacked us."

"At least, we thought it was you at the time. More recent evidence supports the idea that you had been temporarily possessed by a magic spirit that had latched onto your heart: the esper Mateus, the Corrupt." The screen immediately flickered to two different images. First, concept art of Mateus Kyle remembered from Earth, in the hopes that it might jog some memories; second, the towering visage of Mateus that faced them in Halloween Town, in all its corrupted glory. "Mateus and my own spirit, Ultima, have a bad history. She has made an effort to redeem herself; he has only gone further down the dark path. As a result of her original betrayal, though, he—and maybe up to ten others like him—seek to destroy her."

"That's why we think he possessed you and attacked us; to get to me. We also know that, at a later time, he approached a second group of our friends in an attempt to convince them to join him and kill me," he went on. "I say convince... more like coerce. It didn't work, either way."

"Still, he wasn't always in control. When you had control... well, that's where things get confusing."

"When we first met you—before Mateus took over and attacked—you were guarding the lab of an infamously malicious scientist." An image of Vexen appeared on the screen. He left it at that, and Vexen's image disappeared to reveal images of Ajora and some of the other Replicas appeared side by side. "You and he had paired together to create dark replicas of my friends and I. Clones with our powers, our thoughts, but none of the light in our hearts... only darkness."

"It's the second time we met where the confusion starts. Because when we met then... well, you presented yourself as an ally." The replicas vanished, replaced by a picture of Louis in his Ivalician attire. "We had no idea who you were. You told us you were Louis, from the land of Ivalice, and wanted to help us however possible. You were a good ally... some of us considered you a friend."

"It's confusing because now, we also have a second account of those actions... a different point of view, essentially. From someone who had had access to your mind and knew who you were fully," he said, and beside Louis' image, Ajora reappeared. "My replica, Ajora. On the one hand, you could argue that he's obviously not trustworthy; you could easily have been trying to redeem yourself. But he's also made a point of never lying... and now I share his memories, so everything's still blurry."

"Here's what we know. You were fighting with us across a few worlds. In a few places... you seemed to lose control. Not to Mateus, but to your own darkness," he said, and the screen switched first to show an image of Louis, lying unconscious on a wooden floor, with darkness seeping out of his body at a dangerous rate. Then it switched to the terrifying armored form they all witnessed in Hawaii, rending gravity with his might. "The first time, you couldn't remember anything that had even happened. The second time... well, we don't know anything for a fact."

"Still, besides those two incidents, you stuck with us... until this morning. You disappeared in the middle of the fight, and to be honest, none of us have actually seen you since. Not the physical you," he went on. At that point, the foreboding black specter that came to Kyle appeared on the screen, giving the cold, dark chuckle just as it had before.

"You appeared to three of us like this, in a sense, though no one knew it was you until recently. You approached the other two... differently than me, as far as I know. For them, you latched on to them, and in their time of desperate need, offered strength and protection, if they just let you in," he explained. "For me, it was more... tainted."

"There was a lot of pressure... lives were on the line, and it was my duty to protect them. But there's no excuse. I should have fared better," he admitted with a sigh. "I was losing control. You appeared to me, like this, and offered power... dark, twisted power. And I accepted."

"In that moment of connection, I knew who the specter was... the host of Mateus. But the host was in control this time, because this wasn't how Mateus worked by any means," he explained. "So any hopes that the host was just a good guy being possessed... got thrown out the window, essentially. He was offering help, yes, but... at the cost of injecting our hearts with bits of his own darkness. That doesn't exactly ring "good guy"."

"Anyway, when my head cleared, my friends and I ejected the dark specter, though it was more than a bit painful. Another person who'd accepted a specter, Kyla, had hers mostly ripped out of her heart by an even worse guy," he continued. "And the third, a a woman named Bobbi, still has it, but because we're in a world with a powerful aura of light, the darkness of the specter is suppressed."

"Like I said, that's what we know. Ajora's accounts add more detail to the story," he said, though he shrugged. "Of course, as they're from his point of view, they should be taken with a grain of salt, but... there's a good chance they're accurate."

"From his account, even while you worked alongside us, you were working with others. You were an ally of Seymour, and the two of you—three, if you include Nicholas, the host of another corrupt esper named Chaos—were acting as allies to collect information on us," at that, the three of them appeared on the screen; Louis, in his Scion Armor, on Seymour's right, Nicholas, in his own Scion Armor from Atlantis, on his left. "Seymour has recently revealed himself as one of the major players on the side of darkness; it was he that set you and the scientist, Vexen, to making the Replicas. Nicholas gave up on his act and went full-fledged psychopath. You, though..."

The images of Seymour and Nicholas disappeared, and the screen focused on Louis, whose visage slowly changed to show his clothed disguise instead.

"While you were disguised, you were still bound to Mateus. And you used him; the Mateus that approached my other friends and tried to gain their allegiance was doing so by your command." he said. "The second time you lost control, in that powerful dark armor... you'd attained that power by driving with Ajora, fusing your hearts and bodies. Doing that requires that both participants agree, so you'd consented. And finally, last night, Ajora called a meeting, and you were there, along with Nicholas, and some other replicas."

"Essentially, you were still acting as a spy. And yet... Ajora seemed to think that after awhile with us, you grew to actually want to help us," he said; the image of Louis remained on the screen. "Even more than destroying the replicas, which you hated and felt responsible for. You had your own agenda, yes, but sometimes compassion seemed to actually win out in the end. You went above and beyond in your "acts" of allegiance. What was malicious and what was benevolent... well, only the real you can say."

"Still, though, I have a theory."

With that comment, the mood of the conversation seemed to shift. His somber tone grew lighter, amicable, instantaneously.

"This place is called the Station of Awakening. It is, essentially, the metaphysical realm of my heart. And due to recent events, my heart has been purged of any outside sources of darkness," he explained; briefly, the screen showed an image of Kyle twisting the Trident in the mosaic, only for everything to erupt in light—and making the screen stay white. "That you are here can literally only mean one thing: you have no taint. You have no connection to the darkness, to any form of corruption that your original self might be full of. Hell, thinking about it, that's probably exactly why you're amnesiac."

"But you are clearly a piece of the original Louis; the only way you could have arrived was by that specter. By definition, then, your very existence proves that there is good in him. There is light. Then that, itself, proves there is a chance, however small, that he can be redeemed," he said. Suddenly, the screen showed the artist, Kyla. "Kyla is likely even more evidence; after the specter was supposedly ripped from her, there was still a piece there. A piece that she feels strongly for. She was the first to argue for your salvation, because before her, none of us really thought it was possible."

"I'll be frank. I was one of the doubters. My only experiences with you, by that point, had been you attempting to murder me, you helping us while simultaneously helping our enemies behind the scenes, us finding out you were responsible for the replicas, and then you trying to 'help' me by infusing me with darkness," he said, shrugging. "You didn't exactly have a sum-positive record. But she insisted we try. I wasn't against trying, mind you—just didn't think it had a chance of working."

"I was wrong. I can admit that now."

He turned to face Louis, his expression not a smile, but not a frown; his lips were tight, as if in sheepish guilt or apology. "And I'm sorry for it. Faith hasn't exactly been a strong suit of mine... I've always relied on evidence. Well, here you are. All the evidence I needed."

"If you exist here, and inside Kyla, then it's likely you're also in Bobbi as well. It's just a matter of making sure the dark part latched onto you is removed in her," he explained, turning back out to the screen, which showed Bobbi next to Kyla. "If we can do that, then we'll have three pieces. Three proofs of your light. And if we can help you take back your heart... maybe we can give you the existence you deserve."

[[Louis? : Station of Awakening]]

The boy was silent, deathly so as he stared, no, glared out into the mists and dark expanse. He grimaced multiple times as Kyle listed off each of his transgressions. He leaned forward on his elbows and cupped his hands in a fist over his mouth. His eyebrows bunched up, his jaw clenched, his shoulders tightened. It seemed the more Kyle said, the less the boy wanted to hear.

At last the history lesson came it an end. Of course, he wanted to believe Kyle was lying, and everything he said was made up, but nothing in his voice sounded insincere or deceiving. If Kyle'd looked closely, he might have noticed the tears in his eyes, "I-" the boy choked, "I'm sorry."

With a cough to clear his throat, he continued, "I never would have imagined it was that bad. When I thought about what I might have been like... I imagined someone kind and just. A guardian or a protector, a scholar at the very least. Not... it just doesn't feel right," he laid his forehead on three knuckles, "So much for wishful thinking."

"Eh, like I said, don't sweat it," Kyle said, shrugging. He didn't really know how to help with the tears, since so far he didn't really know this new Louis.

"The past is in the past. Let it go. Rise, like the break of dawn," he mused, smiling, though every single muscle in his face wanted it to be a wide grin, deep laughter, and an outbreak of song. "You can't control what happened. Just what happens. So, don't stop moving forward."

"The way I see it, sadness doesn't really help. It's good to get it out, so don't stop, but don't linger in it. It's not a strong motivator, psychologically speaking," he continued. "You want to be a scholar? A protector, a guardian? Then don't wish for it or imagine it. Fight to be those things. If your past upsets you, get angry at it and do whatever you can to leave it behind, make it insignificant."

"The point is, if you can't control it, don't stress about it, you know?" Kyle ran a hand through his own hair, thinking about the past few days of his own mistakes. "All it does is make you feel worse."

"I'm not sad..." he responded with a sour laugh, "I'm frustrated. You don't need to worry, I won't let this stop me. I don't care what kind of person I was... whoever that person was isn't me, and I refuse to become that again if I can help it."

There was a sigh and another smile, "So, you've told me all about me... or who I was... What about you? Tell me about yourself."

Kyle smiled when Louis said he was frustrated. Good. Frustration was drive. Not power... just drive. Taking power from anger never ended well.

"Well, I'm... uh... well, not good at talking about myself, for one thing," he said, laughing. "How about you ask questions and I answer accordingly, eh?"

With a smile, the boy nodded, "I totally understand. I have a hard time talking about myself too," he paused, grinning impishly as he chuckled at his terrible joke, the expression a far-cry from fitting the crystalline halo.

As he moved about, a bit of light caught a shard of crystal, flickering for a moment before something might catch Kyle's eye appeared behind the boy. Walking upon nothing, ghost-like apparitions took shape. Voices starting as whispers exploded into shouts, "Hey, leave her alone!"

A boy burst into view like a cloud of smoke, "I said, leave her alone! You made her cry!"

"She deserved it, she's a sinner."

"No one deserves this. You're cruel and evil."

"I'm just doing gods work."

"God's work, screw that. Apologize and give her stuff back."

"Who do you think you are? How dare you speak to me like that, I'm an adult."

"Who you you think YOU are? How DARE you hide behind God as an excuse for this," the boy moved forward, forcing the older woman back until she ran into an invisible wall. The child half her size pointing a finger up at her face, "You will apologize or I'll see to it you never hold a job like this again."

"I'll be speaking with your parents and have you expelled for this."

"Go ahead, I'd rather that than stand here watching you force a girl to tears calling her a slut and a whore. She's much kinder and a far better example than you'll ever be."

"Out of my way," the woman attempted to push him out of the way, but he pushed back.

"No, I didn't hear you apologize."

"Well, let's see," the boy spoke, apparently unaware of the images and voices playing out behind him, "Well... hmm... What's your favorite color?" he rolled his eyes and shrugged, "Sorry, can't think of anything else specifically. Not sure what to ask."

Kyle outright snorted at the joke, unable to restrain his grin. But while Louis thought of a question, he heard new voices. He swiftly craned his neck to see, but when he saw they were practically translucent, and that Louis wasn't paying them any attention, he craned his neck in the opposite direction... as if he'd been trying to crack his neck. Then he gave "full" attention to Louis, using his peripherals to pay attention to the other scene.

Religious zealots. Always fun.

"Oh, can't you tell?" he asked, grinning as he leaned back slightly to motion with his hands at his mostly-green coat, almost as if it were blatant writing on some white, lit screen people should read from. "Green all the way. Though I'm also fairly fond of purple and red—deeper shades, personally."

{{Cue: This Dream from NieR}}

"Good colors on you," he said, nodding to Kyle's green and gold attire, "and purple and red are awesome colors, I agree with you there."

The boy looked back out to the black expanse. He was quiet, not quite sure how to continue the conversation. He played with the hem of his pants and nibbled on the inside of his lip, "So..." he drew on, trying to fill in the silence, watching a glimmering star out in the darkness, "I'm terrible at coming up with questions about others, but, I have a question for you about me... if the old me... or other me... whatever. If I'm not him... where's the real one, and why am I here and not, ya know, there? Eeeh... I'm not making any sense am I?"

A trail of mist drifted past the edge of the boy's nose. He leaned back again and waved it away, looking up and flicking a piece of his halo, not budging it from its orbit but rotating it slowly instead, releasing another series of chimes, "It just doesn't make sense you know? If I- he was there before... as your... uh... frenemy, why'd he approach you like a phantom or ghost or whatever? Why leave me here? What's the point? Where's the gain? If he was working with the bad guys, why help you fight them? Shouldn't he have been trying to defeat you? Hell, another question, he offered you power to aid you as some kind of specter, why not just offer power or aid as himself if he was already on the inside as your ally? What happened to make him throw that away?"

{ Kyle : Station of Awakening }

"Those... are good questions."

Kyle sighed as he searched through his mind. Ajora had information on this. Information he, Kyle, wasn't exactly proud of... but thankful for, considering the circumstances.

"I'll get to them in order. He's... in a castle in a land called Narnia, slowly taking over the countryside. You being here... I can't quite answer, though I'd posit it was accidental," he began.

"He approached as a phantom because... well, I don't have any solid memories on that, either. For whatever reason, he didn't want to leave the castle he's holed up in, so instead he sent out pieces of himself to do the work," he explained. "Leaving you here was almost definitely an accident, the more I think about it. If he was as corrupted by Mateus as my memories imply, it's entirely possible that he didn't even realize what parts of him he was placing into the phantom spells—pieces, I'd wager, the esper wanted lost and forgotten forever, since you seem to be his redeeming qualities."

"As for why he was working with the bad guys and yet helping us... it's not so black and white. There are so many different factions and goals it's hard enough to keep track when you're taking part," he said, scratching his head. "Louis, it seems, was originally working for the main forces of darkness. But a short time ago, it was revealed just how... absolute that evil was. So instead, he began working on his own agenda. Kind of working alongside the replicas, kind of not. Basically, they each have their own plans, but most of them agree that the main darkness can't succeed."

"Still, as to why he originally offered us power... no idea, because we weren't going against the main villains at that time. What I know is that when we accepted the help, he knotted himself so powerfully in our hearts that it was impossible to remove it without severe damage. So..." he said, shrugging. "Assume what you will from that. From an 'enemy' standpoint, we can assume he just wanted to get a foothold in our hearts. From a 'friend' standpoint... maybe he... I dunno, didn't like the replica we were fighting against? Still doesn't really explain why he had to help in such a parasitic way."

"As for that last one...," he said, his voice trailing off with a sigh. "At some point before the battle started, when he was with us, he tried to enact one of his goals in secret. He wanted to prevent us from freeing a sea goddess. He failed, and... that's when he vanished."

"If I had to guess, whatever it was about that failure pushed him too far. For whatever reason, that bust triggered his departure, his going to the castle... it changed his entire style," he said, going through what little he knew from Ajora's memories. The departure had intrigued the replica—so much so that he'd had someone watching from the Magic Basin for most of the battle. "So much of this is speculation, though. The only way we can get solid answers is from him, and I have a feeling that may come up in the next couple days, since Narnia is an ally of ours."

[[Louis? : Station of Awakening]]

"Why would he want to stop you from releasing a sea goddess? Hide in a castle? What’s a castle going do for you?” he looked down, squinting as he attempted to grasp the situation, thought it would seem he’d gotten a hold of referring to this other Louis as him not I. He sighed, “Never mind, I don’t get it. None of this makes sense. The more I ask about this guy, the more confused I get. The more I try to understand what’s going on the more lost I feel. It’s... it’s like trying to grab water. The more I tighten my grip, the more slips between my fingers.”

The young man stood up all of a sudden and turned away from the edge, walking towards the center of the stain-glass mosaic, “Maybe I’m asking about the wrong person. What else can you tell me about the other guy you mentioned... shoot, what’s his name... Ma...Mateus? Who is that? You said he was corrupting him right? Maybe if I try to understand what Mateus’ goals are, I can try to get what it is Louis’ plans were when he... uh, made me? That doesn't sound right.” he laughed lightly and turned on his heal to face Kyle. The dragoon could see shifting behind and around the boy with a fragmented halo, like ghosts about to take shape once more, “Which brings me to another question, ‘Why corrupt pieces of him... like me?’ I guess you might have answered that already... he wanted revenge? But, if he had to corrupt Louis, that would imply under normal circumstances, Louis wouldn't have cooperated?”

"That's... the hope," Kyle responded, swiveling in his spot so that he was facing the inside of the station, his legs crossed, his back to the endless beyond. "We're all from Earth. So we... want to assume that no one would actually, purposefully be a murderer or psychopath without external forces. It's aided by the fact that we know Mateus had locked away portions of the man's mind, from what exploration was done."

Kyle was silent for a bit, biting his lip. He'd thought he'd explained it all fairly simply, but... apparently not. Or maybe, because he was only a shard, he couldn't get to that level of comprehension? Who knew. He just wanted to make it easier on the guy.

"What about Mateus... yeah," he said, sighing and scratching the back of his head. "He's an eons-old magic spirit that, near the beginning of time, betrayed his creators and fought to cover the cosmos in darkness, and, to this day, wants to accumulate power for... something. For control, for destruction, I don't know. There's a lot we don't know about... a lot of things. We're still trying to put together a lot of pieces."

The male nodded. As though separating from his body, another Louis ran away from the two, falling to his knees immediately, the sound of panting and tears obvious, "Right, then, if that's true, maybe the other me, Louis, he might not actually be evil after all. Just under the manipulation of Mateus to forward whatever his goals are. I mean, if he was evil from the get-go, he wouldn't have had to corrupt anything right? So, I think you're right, we might actually have a chance to turn this around. If you can do to him what you've done for me, maybe, just maybe we can fix him and reverse what Mateus did."

{{Cue: L(Loneliness) by Ice}}

"DAMN IT!" the phantasmal image screamed suddenly, slamming his fist into the floor, the audible sound of cracking glass heard clearly, "I tried... ********! What did I do wrong? They just slipped through my fingers! I couldn't fight, I couldn't run. Why did I have to be so powerless? If I'd just had the strength... I could have... I could have..."

There was louder cracking now, smoke spat out of the platform, giving an illusion as though the stain glass beneath their feet was breaking, "They're all gone... I couldn't do... anything..." the boy let his arms drop limp to the floor as he stared up to the light spilling down. He screamed between heaving gasps for air as he wept, "Everyone... why? WHY?! You took everyone from me. Why would you do this? What reason is there?! I'm all alone...I have nothing..."

"If only I had my memories... maybe we could figure out JUST what it is Mateus was trying to hide from Louis, then maybe that'd be a clue. I feel there's something we can do, I'm just powerless to remember. Damn it..." the boy clenched fist fist and looked up at the light shining on the duo from above. The boy on his knees, the one standing, each facing a different direction but staring at the sky, searching for answers.

All at once there was a loud smash followed by an inhuman roar that reverberated through the abyss as the clouds of pale smoke sprayed up and blided Kyle for a moment, the next, they were no longer standing on Kyle's platform, but instead, one of Louis. The ghost was no longer the boy on the floor, but the boy standing.

Before Kyle could react, the floor shattered entirely, Louis going limp, falling like a rag doll head first into the black below. As the scene went dark, voices echoed about the emptiness...

"I have to fight... I have to survive."
"What's the point in living? Everyone's dead."

"There has to be some way to save them."
"What about dead, don't you understand?"

"There has to be something, anything I can do"
"It's hopeless. might as well just give up..."

"There nothing left for me anymore."
"There's nothing I can do."

"Except... destroy the ones responsible."
"With what power? You're weak. You're worthless."

"I don't know, but..."
"I can't let the darkness win."

"I'll fight... I'll fight the darkness even if I have to use my teeth and nails as my only weapons," there was a tiny spark, "I'll tear at them like a rabid animal. Whatever I have to do... I WILL fight..." a glow like candlelight, "I'll get my revenge on those responsible, one way or another..." a fire grew, silhouetting the boy still careening into the pitch black below, "even if I need to become a demon myself to do it."

The fire burst outward, threatening to consume Kyle before suddenly, something like a claw, or the coiling legs of a spider wrapped around the heart of the flame. The black grasp and fire writhed going back and forth for a moment before without any further warning, the darkness consumed it, snuffing it out, the abyss snapping to an all time chill, like a mid-winter blizzard, as a voice whispered in a hiss, "This one's miiiine."

The cold, the air, the pitch black was choking. It felt like a pair of hands, claws, talons wrapped around Kyle's throat, arms, and legs, then began to squeeze tightly as the voice whispered, "Struggle all you like but eventually... you will fall to me. No light be save you now. Soon you will serve me. Fight for me. Murder for me."

Kyle could hear screaming, almost as though it were coming from his own throat, screaming in defiance of the forces holding him down, "I will never obey you! I'm no one's doll, no one's tool! I'm not your dog!"

"Not now... but you will be. When I'm finished with you, you won't be my dog, you'll be my slave."

Just as his heart raced, as pain seemed as though it was about to set in, as the spark ran up the spine and sweat beaded to the surface-

"Kyle?" the boy spoke, snapping everything back to reality... if it could be called that. Kyle's station once more supported their feet, the boy on the floor was there, only this time staring at Kyle, eyes ignited red, glowing like blood in an inferno, a pair of jagged, demonic horns sprouting from his temples up and back. And just as he'd arrived, he vanished as the smoke dissipated into nothing, "Kyle, you alright?"

{ Kyle : Station of Awakening }

"That's the hope," Kyle said, though he immediately tensed when the specter behind Louis including the sound of grass breaking. His eyes were, at least momentarily, transfixed on the scene, though to the Louis to whom he spoke, it would just seem as if he was staring off into the distance.

"There was, um, a period... when Ajora had deeper access, um, but," Kyle started, though the scene behind Louis was distracting him more than he'd like to admit. To Louis, it would have seemed more like Kyle was balancing something mentally, his eyes brows furrowing as he tried to keep track of two conversations at once... one of the few things he couldn't multitask whatsoever.

Then the vision erupted, both literally and in scale.

Kyle, it's okay, it's—

An illusion, I know.

Something in Kyle was prepared for the scene—not its content, but its severity. He remained a curious onlooker, taking in the sights, sounds, sensations as best he could. This bit of history might be lost forever, after all, since Louis couldn't remember it himself. But it was there.

And now, here.

The man's words and thoughts rang a little too close to home for Kyle, bringing his own first dive to mind. The outcome, though, was different by only a margin. When Kyle dove, he thought he could still save his brother; only afterward, once his heart had been light-gilded, did he give into rage. Louis, though, seemed to have seen everyone die first. So when give the option to stand... he didn't even register it.

—even if I need to become a demon myself to do it.

We might have been switched.

In that moment, everything Kyle theorized erupted before him, like evidence he wished didn't exist. The fire's explosion caused little reaction; the grasping appendage that destroyed it, however, caused him to grimace, particularly the hissing voice of the abyss.

There was gripping at him, and he acknowledged the screaming, and he even sensed the coming pain. And yet, as he felt the sensation envelop him, Kyle remained calm—at least visually. Mentally, emotionally, he knew he was safe. He may have been consumed with illusion, but he knew it was illusion. He'd worked with the most powerful illusionist of the age. The key to living through any illusion was simply to remember what it was, so that the mind and body didn't react accordingly.

All the same, his blood pressure sure spiked like hell, giving him a bit of a headache.

It'll be far more satisfying unraveling you than Ajora.

When all was said and done, Kyle kept his eyes locked with the red-eyed specter, and the only thing he could manage was a glance of pity before it vanished.

"Yeah," he said, his tone melancholy. "Just dealing with some dark memories."

"It's frustrating, but until we get more facts, it might be better if we let it go," he explained, shaking his head, as if in defeat. "All we have is speculation now, and that'll just wind us up in anxiety. That's no good for either of us. We just need to stay positive and get ready to break Mateus' face repeatedly."
