LHC...
Apparently they started early? Heard about the official test having been done earlier today. They have started up successfully.

Deicide 5 Stop whining about the y2k mk II AKA the LHC. Stupid tubic piece of s**t. And now... I challenge you all to fight me so I can kill you. It's actually not a tube but eh. And I would fight you if you weren't a bloody stain that I made. In laymen, Phia, the LHC is a bigass, international science project which involves a lot of money and high energy particle physics. The reason it's being mentioned is the science involved makes no sense to common people, and so common people seem to think this bit of science is going to kill us all. The first run was supposed to go up today. As you can see, you are still made of the same matter you were a day ago.

Funny, me and my buddy Kyle were just talking about the LHC at dinner tonight. His mother's boyfriend is one of those idiots Thanatos was talking about. Ranting, raving, about how the second they power that up it's gonna cause the atoms to go off like a shotgun and bust a hole through the planet, or some such nonsense. He jumped from one wild conclusion to the other, but what ever.

There have been a whole lot of predictions on how the LHC would actually kills us, and all of the people spouting them have no idea what they're actually saying... as in they use explanations that sound scientific, and hence the speaker doesn't get it... But if you think your friend's mother's boyfriend is bad then check this guy out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt1Yo610lG0

Suffice to say I was entertained for a good 6 or 7 minutes. xd

Suffice to say I was entertained for a good 6 or 7 minutes. xd Pretty much the nominal entertainment you can get out of a conspiracy theorist. Unfortunately now that the LHC has been fired and nothing happened, this guy is less entertaining. The most amusing part for me is when he says 'a child knows what a black hole is.' Even my understanding of a blackhole is fairly rudimentary. You should try and see if your friend can get what the guy has to say now that nothing's happened from the LHC. I'm betting he'll still cling to the idea. I quote Professor Manchester of the LHC project when I say "anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t**t."

I find the most ironic thing about this chain of posts is that most of the people in this thread have exchanged numerous cells in their bodies for new ones by now.
Though, I guess it's the same matter, in a sense...

The question of 'same matter' is a philosophical discussion question, unless you want to give it an operational definition for a specific experiment.
But most people who talk about the LHC fare as well in philosophy as in science. So, not well.
