Why is this thread's activity so sporadic? At times the place goes completely silent for hours, and other times we have a post every 30 seconds for hour-long stretches...

Because certain people bring with them interesting topics or start up new arguments. And others arrange matches and mods are asked to do certain jobs. If key people aren't online there isn't much to talk about...I, for example, can never get the guild to be active.
