Not to make Than sound antisocial or sociopathic, but the best way for you at least to avoid making him angry is to not have your first encounter with him begin by speaking directly to him. As far as he knows, some douche has decided to redecorate one of the most abhorred and tragedy stricken locations in the region, and his initial impression is that someone would have to be fairly ignorant to take up such a place as residence.

If you can't interact with him without directly speaking to him, then at the very least don't make your first line to him some bit of small talk xp If anything, be blunt and concise.

No doubt. But by 'not directly' I really mean don't just address him out of the blue. You're more likely to gain favor by coming in part way through one of his conversations with someone else, or a conversation he's listening to, and saying something relevant rather than saying 'how's the weather in the citadel, my young friend'

Though Than would attend, he really detests the idea of a party thrown simply for the sake of it. If he knew Gan did it with the indeed of gaining knowledge of the region's affairs beyond Twice Royal, Than would be more intrigued. In fact, that's probably going to be his main justification for requesting a mid-party fight with KB; a duel between him and KB would exemplify for Gan better than almost anything else the real level of tension and hostility that exists in his newfound home.
