xp the first scene made me feel all sad and emo... poor kid. And why in the world are there 9 pieces of 8? Actually don't awnser that question I'll figure it out.

9 peices of eight were given to the 9 pirate lords.
in real life the brotherhood existed (just like the Codex) as well but it was nothing like it was in the movie. the 9 peices of eight was a reference to the 9 major bodies of water at the time, and each body of water had one or two pirates that ruled supreme over them. pirate rulers were constantly in flux though when one died, another took his place or they fought over it.
pirate lords are very vague and rarely brought up in history, just like chinese pirates, who were the first country to ever have a navy, nearly 1000 years before the europeons even took to the water. theres even a long standing theory that the chinese discovered north america at least 700 years before columbus. unfortunately, after china purposefully enclosed itself to the rest of the world. all that written and recorded knowledge was lost so no one knows the real truth. only bits and peices, but so far, that theory is ringing pretty true.
