if he can hang from it, that means it's strong enough to hold his weight and something he's holding in his hands, up to a respectable weight or whatever... don't want him catching anvils with a single wrap around the pole/tree. so, make it thick. you won't need a weight thing unless he keeps it there to constantly train it.
it should also affect his running, if he's a sprinter [see: cheetahs]. but with a big tail, i doubt he'd be running too much and expecting it to help [see: dragons].

Well, I mean supporting him upwards, i.e. it extended vertically with him balanced on top of it-- but if that seems conceivable, then by all means. ;D
About running, yeah, I was planning on making him a bit agile/acrobatic. For the most part I was gonna have the tail, when idle, wrapped around his waste, but of course he'd still train it and it'd be reasonably thick, but not the size of an arm. As for the dragons things, I have a book right next to me that I used for Laguna, but they used their tail more for flying and just smashing through s**t than actual movement, I figured.

*A montage starts of Casca's character walking around.* [Casca] About running, yeah, I was planning on making him a bit agile/acrobatic. As shown in the montage, if he constantly has it wrapped around his waist then there's two things to remember: 1. It will not be a strong tail. To wrap it like that it would need to be thin, or else it would end up as a super-bulky belt that just gets in the way. 2. If it IS a super-bulky belt then that means it's heavy, due to the muscle in it. This also means that because he's got it wrapped around his waist most of the time he's not having it sticking out behind him like tails are want to do. This means his balance is off, because NATURAL BALANCE would be having the tail behind him to balance like most animals do. At that point you've got two problems... either he's completely off balance without the tail behind him, since that's not the way his body was meant to be... or he's half-off balance in either situation, because he spends so much time with the tail wrapped that he's managed to get accustomed to it... however, it's still not natural balance and his growing accustomed to the shift in weight would be double-edged, as whenever he let the tail loose it would throw off his balance again.

"Oh where is my hairbrush~"True, however I did say when it was idle it would be wrapped around his waste, not all the time (which may end up most the time though), however having a straight back would change that too. If he got used to moving around upright with a tail still balance wouldn't be too changed, he'd just have a tail. He'd have to walk at an angle for his tail to have any real effect on balance, methinks. No expert though. I think it wouldn't be too hard to adapt to the changes in balance (consider a tight rope walker with a pole) or something like that. He may be a bit clumsier without the tail extended, but I wouldn't think it'd be too great a change. (Nice to see you again, by the way.)

[Casca] "Oh where is my hairbrush~" "Over there is my hairbrush~"[Casca] I think it wouldn't be too hard to adapt to the changes in balance (consider a tight rope walker with a pole) or something like that. He may be a bit clumsier without the tail extended, but I wouldn't think it'd be too great a change. Probably not. Just saying that most species that have a tail use the tail as a means of maintaining balance. Plus the fact that a tail capable of supporting body weight would be a lot more than that 'so popular' inch and a half diameter prehensile thing people seem to get into their heads. *Wonders if he ever actually WILL get up and kill those animals he was supposed to...*

Hey, I'm not a zombie. I was sleeping until my family decided "HEY, LET'S GET UP AND MAKE A BUNCH OF NOISE AND MAKE ME DO STUPID s**t."
Plus zombie-ism.

s**t happens, then you die, la la la la apple pie. If there were elves in my yard I wouldn't have been procrastinating. And I probably wouldn't be using such impersonal methods of extermination. I'd be sitting on the porch with a rifle in hand waiting for one of those buggers to poke their head out.
