Lack of supplies on my part (read 'Emma thought it was the 17th today and so didn't plan') means I'm starting celebrations tomorrow. Might continue them into the 24th.

Yep, Hector created it. Whatever I might think of Hector personally, that is an awesome festival, that I might still adapt to how I do things. I have not seen the backlash that he's gotten, but I think its mostly imagined.

Personally, I have a lot of festivals that others have created. They are far more relevant than things that were Athens specific.

Most people who have talked about heliogenna seem to give it a thumbs up for accuracy. (Even mr. whiny pants)
It is all his own imagining though. To provide a bridge with the neopagan festivals taking place at the same time.
I found a really awesome blog about it a while ago. I'l dig it out again.

I'm currently reading through Roger Walsh's book on Shamanism. So far- I'm actually a bit impressed.

What's the title? I might look it up, as I'm interested in learning something... credible about shamanism.

Not to sound crass, but it's a problem of branding. You can write a book about contemporary/post modern witchcraft without calling it Wicca, but then you don't get the brand power that Wicca evokes. If Gardner was as clever as his friend Aleister Crowley, he'd have copyrighted the term Wicca, because for all intents and purposes these spurious books calling themselves Wicca or misrepresenting Wicca are essentially compromising the integrity of the religion, especially the "public" perception.

What annoys me the most is that these authors and so on are being apocryphal when they could be progressive instead. There's no reason they can't put forward either a new philosophy or paradigm of modern witchcraft without being such blatant parasites. Interpreting old information in new ways and syncretism have always been the driving forces behind the western esoteric tradition in general.
