Actually, I know exactly why it doesn't tend to help me. It's because a lot of the stories don't actually give me hope.

Let's take the two that I just read.

Quote:
My parents scream and fight constantly and it's gotten bad.

Last night my 4 year old sister came into my room. She tried to pick me up and I asked what she was doing.

She said she was running away and I was one of the things she needed to bring with her.

My baby sister GMH.

Her baby sister wants to run away from home. How's that supposed to give me hope?

Quote:
Yesterday, one of the freshman in my school was diagnosed with cancer.

She has over 25 posts on her Facebook wall, and it is growing every couple of minutes.

Most of them are from people she isn't close to, but they all offer support and hope.

It's gonna be okay Lauren! People coming together GMH

I don't see "people coming together," I see "another innocent girl has cancer." Damn it, world.

It was after reading 17 pages that I started feeling better. Then I proceeded to read up to page 64. xD

Well fine, if you wanna look at things that way--by all means go ahead. But if you really really try to look on the bright side of things, you'd be helping yourself a lot.

I'm not saying everyone has the same way of thinking--nor can the same thing have a good impact on everyone - but you have to find what works for you.Good luck with that =)

One person getting a deadly cancer brings people together right? GREAT! PEOPLE ARE TOGETHER! 8D

Now lets imagine this orphanage is a hospital patient and this bomb is a cancer. Logically same conclusion should be met? 8D

He's making fun of your mentality, that bad things have to happen for good things to happen. Yeah, usually something positive will come from negative things happening, but a lot of times the bad outweighs the good.

By the way, no, you didn't seem rude at all. And yes, I'm on meds. And I appreciate the advice, though it's not helping at the moment.

Well that's different. Nobody chose to give that girl cancer, it just happened. So you sort of have to look at the positives in that case. But in the case of blowing up an orphanage, that would be you doing it. So she'd probably look for the positives, but still be very angry at you for doing it in the first place.

Yes, tragedy brings people together. I'm not saying everything should be sad so that there can be hope. No way. But if you blow up an orphanage JUST to bring people together, it's just. . Well, it's just. . No.

I realize it was a hypothetical example, by the way.

But, let me give you an example--

The Haiti Earthquake.

The event was terrible. Lives were lost, buildings crumbled, the country pretty much ruined. Now, the fact that such a large quake with so much tragedy could bring people together was good.

See, the negatives may outweigh the benefits in a situation like an earthquake, or bombing, or whatever - but the fact that there can be some happiness amongst all the disaster is the part that's meant to give you hope.

I don't like that site either ^^ Most of the time the stories are depressing, not uplifting. Most are like, "Bad s**t happened, but there was a tiny thread of good in it..."

I prefer Makes Me Think [Some of the stories are depressing, but they make no pretense at optimism] or It Made My Day.

Sybaritic

Yeah, they'd be together, but the bad massively outweighs the good. It's the same with the cancer situation, except with the cancer situation there's nothing you can do to stop it.

If you had the choice to give her cancer or not, then you shouldn't choose it just to unite the people. But since she got cancer, you'd might as well make the most of the situation.

The quake eh?

The fact that contractors made the houses out of cheap material without thinking to use rebar (which was about as cheap as the material used to begin with) on houses located near a fault line was an idiotic decision that could have been avoided.
But nobody bothered to look at it that way because lots of people were in trouble and everybody had to unite to save them. :B

I'm rambling on here.

Point is bad things happen, regardless if they're natural or not. People come together because when bad things happen, bad things make people feel bad; subconsciously or not they need to make themselves feel good again so they either go to the source of the trouble or find ways comfort eachother.
It's like that little diddy goes, When you're helping others you really help yourself.
It's a late night for me too, I might not be making any sense in my ramblings either.
I think I'm trying to say selflessness is selfishness and that blown up orphanage sadness = cancer sadness.
