"I do not think I invited something quite like that." Terryn felt better now, having regained her faculties. She had him at a vulnerable point, that gave her a new found confidence, though she had to admit she had to feel a little sorry for him. She stood up as well, taking one look at him and not being able to help a feeling of guilt. "But I am sorry for making assumptions. But given your track record, one can only assume such things."

Marcus headed towards the dining hall, but turned his head at the last moment. "Are you...afraid?" he asked, incredulous. "You are. You're afraid of that, aren't you?"

"Afraid? Me?" Terryn stopped walking, her eyes wide, both from surprise and from the absurdity of her...being afraid...it was impossible. Right? "What....what would I possibly be afraid of?"

Marcus began to smile now, and it was a surprised smile, and the kind of smile he wore when he was able to answer a puzzle or a riddle that no one else knew the answer to. "Of what you said. Of my...taking advantage and then leaving you, in layman's terms."

Terryn scoffed at this, though her normal edge was gone. "I do not think so. Why would I possibly be afraid of abandonment by the likes of you?" She crossed her arms over her chest, trying her best to remain calm and cold.

"That is a question that I cannot answer," answered Marcus, now facing Terryn. "But it is the only possible explanation, for why else would to answer to my kiss in the way that you did?" demanded Marcus, both frustrated and curious.

"I-" For this, Terryn did not have an answer. She dropped her gaze to the ground, her fingers shaking slightly as she fidgeted with her flower. "I would...well one would think...I simply..." She struggled for a few seconds to find the answer she was searching for, but it kept evading her.

Marcus watched as Terryn stammered to find an answer and closed his eyes, feeling sorry for her. "Let us go and eat now. I promise to never so much as touch you again," he told her, turning and stepping again towards the dining hall.

Terryn sighed and followed behind Marcus, grabbing him by the arm before they came into view of the elders. "Stop, just....just wait." She looked up at him, taking a deep breath. "I do not want you never to touch me again, but a girl must be careful in such situations, no? You are the only man apart from my father who I have ever allowed to see any part of me except for the cold, heartless wench that others know me as. You surely must understand how that could frighten me."

Marcus thought about this, and looked once more at Terryn, now more fragile than he earlier would have believed possible. "I do understand. At least slightly. But you cannot possibly keep...attacking me whenever you are afraid. I've put up with you this long, haven't I? Surely I am not going to kiss you one day and disappear the next."

"Two weeks is not horribly long." Terryn frowned, knowing internally that being with her for that long was actually an accomplishment. "But I just do not want to end up like one of those weak women who are left, heartbroken and alone, without any due warning. It has happened before, I have seen it."

Marcus looked at her wearily. He would have to make her fight herself for this one. "If you don't take a leap of faith now, I don't see why I should extend this beyond our original 3 week mark," he said finally, even though he inwardly cringed as he said it.

"Extend it?" Terryn glanced up at him, a look of disbelief and a hint of relief on her face. "You...wanted to extend it?"

Marcus blinked. Well, that seemed to have the wrong effect. "Well...I don't really want to anymore," he said, frowning. "But, yes, I did. Given that we can both...like each other."

"Oh..." Terryn felt that sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach again, which caused a reaction in her that she never really experienced before. She felt a stining in her eyes, and before she really knew what she was doing, she found herself wiping away tears that were rolling down her cheeks.
