Fawn nodded at the lilac doe as she mentioned sticking with the others. She wasn't about to wander off too far, but there was more to this then just the strange squeaking in a tree. Seeing that this was being handled, Fawn nosed at Talltale whom returned to her back, kinda hiding himself into one of the saddle bags that were on her back.

"I am going to go and see if anything else has been found." She told those whom were at the large tree before turning around and heading towards the eastern side of the hill.

When she reached the other direction that things were found. She looked at the pink and white doe whom seemed to have found something else. Here the prints were huge and there was more then just one moving in that direction. Ears twisting themselves backwards as she didn't want to think about what was making these tracks.

"Seems like we have a trail to follow." She muttered not really to anyone before looking towards the doe Sweetpea whom had found the tracks."Think I will have a look to see if these tracks stay together a little ways down before coming back. This looks like they are working together."

Fawn quieted before she set hoof down the hill a ways. She wanted to see if any of these things had broken off from the others or did they move as a unit. Dangerous as it was, Fawn was going to be seriously careful, keeping within sight and shouting distance of the others but she felt someone had to take a peek at least...

Cinder nodded quiet in response to Indira's nudge. She'd heard something this time, and she could spot marks in the trees that seemed... promising. "Yes..." she said, dropping her voice low, not wanting to startle whatever was up in that tree.

She was about to propose some sort of plan when the dark doe began to move, and Cinder was left watching in awe as the adept pushed a fallen tree into place and began to scale it. Onward and upward!

"Nicely done!" she said, watching the other doe. "Hopefully whatever's up there isn't too overwhelmed. If they see that we're nouls and not whatever did this, it might help." It seemed precarious, though, and Cinder herself didn't necessarily have that sort of bodily control. She resorted to another tact instead.

"Whoever's up there, please don't be frightened," she said, tilting her head up toward the source of the squeak. "We're here to help, and we just need to know what happened here so we can figure out what to do."

Dryxel could see he with a group of small nouls. They all seemed to understand the importance of staying together. It was just far to dangerous to wonder off alone.

Watching the other he takes notice that some of them are looking up and have spotted something far above their reach. Look around into the South side of the hill, Dryxel spy's a sturdy fallen log that a small noulicorn might be able to safely climb up and retrieve whatever it up there.

As a matter of fact Dryxel seemed to remember see a very small cute that would be perfect for the job. Searching the group he catches the sight of her soft grey fur. Walking over to her he says "Hello my name is Dryxel. I think we meat once. Your Specterdust right?" They really did not have time for niceties but he did not want to be rude either. "I think if we move that log over there you...Umm...well you might be the safest one to climb up and get whatever it is so high up there." He was dance around her small size in the nice way he could once again not trying to be rude.

After speaking to Specterdust, Dryxel moves to help a noul that clearly had the same idea as him with the fallen tree.

Owlheart searched the trees after one of the does heard something, she spotted the same knothole it seemed others had also seen, she had to shake her head as some nesting material fell out and landed on her nose as she looked up. "I agree" she said to Indira, "Someone definitely seems to be in there" she added, watching as Indira moved a log "Let me help" she said, rushing to try and help the other noul position it in a way that meant perhaps one noul could get up there and see/talk to whoever was hiding in that hole.

There were an awful lot of the huge tracks headed straight down the hill, but she could definitely make out some noul tracks mixed in. She had a horrible feeling about the big ones, but her brain nagged at her. If there were noulicorns down at the bottom, if they were still alive, she thought she'd better try to save them.

But maybe not alone. She looked back to Havoc, who hadn't seemed to find anything new. "Hey! I still see more tracks going this way. Will you come with me?"

She headed down without waiting for his answer, hoping he'd be too stunned to refuse. Who could let a pretty noul go into danger all by herself? Hopefully not Havoc.

Havoc had been on the trail then... the tracks just stopped or something? Ok maybe he wasn't the best tracker. Feeling increasingly stupid, he fumbled around looking at the muddled prints without a hope of puzzling them out. Suddenly the doe called out that she had found more, and relief washed over him. At least one of them knew what they were doing! She was already moving away as he turned to look at where she had found the prints.

Staring down at the spot she had seen more tracks, he paused and gulped. That was... a lot of those big things leaving a lot of prints... This is so bad... He looked back over his shoulder, but couldn't see the group now, what were they doing? Why had no one come this way? But he didn't want to let the doe go on alone for sure and trotted to catch up with her.
"Yeah, right behind you. Let's find them!" He said encouragingly, trying not to look scared.

“Anything?” Specterdust called out to Kevin after a while. She could hear him moving along the branches.

“No, don’t see anything. Could be anywhere,” he replied.

Her ears flicked away as she heard some does conversing about something up a tree. The dark one moved a log or something over and went up. Guess maybe they were looking in the wrong place. Suddenly someone came up to her, introducing themselves, turning her head she looked up into the face of Dryxel. She recognized him of course but was surprised he approached her. He asked for her help moving a log before walking off but she glanced over to see that he was asking for help doing what the does over there were already doing. They seemed to have a handle on it.

Specterdust’s attention turned back towards the trees, realizing she wasn’t paying attention. Some others had already slipped into the forest following the tracks not far from where she stood and it seemed so had Kevin, but from the trees.

“Kevin? Kevin?!” Specterdust called but she didn’t hear a reply. “Oh sugar snaps.” She looked around but the group had split and everyone was busy. She contorted her face into a resigned determination to find her sidekick. “I’ll just make this quick….” she muttered, slipping into the forest via the path of tracks.

“Kevin?” she called up to the trees. Her eyes adjusting to the gloom. “Where did you go?”

Hiding in the Tree

Indira, Dryxel, and Owlheart manage to shove the heavy log against the tree and clamber up until they’re level with the knothole. Inside are two tiny black faeries, huddled around each other in fear. Their chatter dies down to hisses as the shadow of faces passes over the hole.

But Cinder’s kind words from below manage to calm them enough to realize it’s noulicorns peeking in on them! Not monsters! Two heads popped free of the shadows, one with brilliant orange crests and the other with a stripe of magenta down its muzzle.

“Help?” chittered the fiery looking one. “None of you can help.”

“You ought to find some place to hide up high like us,” said the second. “They can’t climb. You’ll be safe in trees but not down there, oh no.”

Questioning the Buck

The buck takes a deep breath and steadies himself, visibly calmed by Cattleya’s demeanor.

“There were six of us apprentices. And seven lifebringers. I...I think there were supposed to be scouts, but I… I don’t really know any scouts.” He nods rapidly, pawing at the dirt. “Lux Brightheart was supposed to lead us. And there was… Penna Kassel, Penna Mantid, Penna Cirilia, Penna Reprise, Penna Signy, and Lux Abioye.”

“There must have been over a dozen noulicorns here when this happened… how could… what could have done this? A lot of them were my friends.”

“We were supposed to be resurrecting a few of them, just enough so that they wouldn’t be lonely until we thought it was safe to make more. But I guess…”

He scanned the hilltop with wild eyes and shuddered.

“...I guess they were more dangerous than what we thought. The bones came from the barrens, I know that much… maybe… maybe they’ll leave on their own.”

Quote:
With that excellent roll the buck has given up all the useful information he knows.

Following the Tracks

As far as Russet Fawn can tell, the muddle of tracks seem to all be clustered in a group, moving together as they head further down the hill. And in the center of those tracks were a few hoof marks from noulicorns. Had the monsters taken some prisoners? Or… some future snacks?

Sweetpea’s mad dash down the hillside after the tracks did not leave her empty handed! The tracks are fairly uniform, spaced in such a way that the monsters they made them were definitely running at a clipped pace.

She spots a few snapped leaves heading off the left-hand side of the trail, away from the main cluster of footprints.

Havoc follows along after the does and has better luck deciphering the tracks now. There doesn’t seem to be any deviation from the course. They’re going straight down the hill at speed and into the deeper woods beyond… It looks like some noulicorn tracks are sandwiched in between the monster tracks, too!

Specterdust’s attention is on the trees above, searching for her familiar. She’s headed in the same direction as the others that went after the tracks, but she doesn’t spot any herself. Hopefully Kevin is okay! It’s pretty dangerous out here!

The tracks lead into the woods, away from the hilltop!

Perhaps Nereida's voice was more so too soft for them to hear as she called out to the now recognizable faeries. If her legs could have gotten her up into that tree things may have been different. The other doe she had recently conversed with headed off toward the trail making Nereida grew uneasy knowing a few others were heading toward something undesirable. Returning her gaze upward those gleaming eyes were trained upon Cinder. Pondering what she could do she closed her eyes once again weighing options. Staying here trying to persuade the faeries wasn't really working yet she still opted to try once more. If other nouls could gain their trust they might reveal just what attacked the resurrection party. Those tracks were certainly larger than any of those investigating the area. The small group heading down the hill might possibly be heading into danger...

Still, she focused on trying to get some information calling up to them again.

"I'm sure one of us can help you. Please can you describe what exactly the nouls resurrected? Any information would definitely help us".

Once again her voice sounded too light in her ears but she had definitely tried.

Hunt at the base of the hill for more clues

Stopping where she had been walking, the prints here were a muddle as if all clustered together. Frowning slightly she reached around and nudged at Talltale who was half in one of her saddle back. "Get out here and have a glance around." she told him as he peeked out of the bag.

"There's nothing here that will leap out and attack, is there?" he asked before Fawn nudged him again. Giving a groan, the jack hop pulled himself from the bag and dropped back to the ground. He edged towards the muddle.

Fawn had noted the cluster of hoof prints in the middle of this mess. Were they herding them somewhere? This was starting to make her head hurt as it seemed everyone was going in different directions. If things had been different, Fawn might have wandered after the prints on her own, but these were dangerous moments. And she wasn't about to head off on her own.

"What do you think?" she asked the jack hop whom had bolted back towards her.

"We better get the others. Seems this might be the way that they had taken the Nouls that weren't slaughtered up above. But more eyes would be nice." was his answer before returning to the saddlebag where his tail still stuck out.

She needed more to take back, something that would give rise to the idea of them following the cluster. Perhaps there was something she could take back up the hill.

Faeries:

Cinder's ears pressed backward apprehensively, wondering what on earth could have scared these poor faeries so. She glanced over at Indira, who had made it much closer to the faeries than she and was also conveniently off the ground, and glanced about her nervously, suddenly painfully aware of the carnage all around.

"What could have possibly done this?" she wondered aloud. "Listen, I know it may not be much, but if you come with us, you might be safer. Numbers, you know?"

Indira balanced on the trunk, and wasn't entirely surprised to see a pair of faeries poke out the hole. She took a deep breath, and considered how best to address them. She could feel Fleet in her mind, and on her back. A calming presence. And a little reminder to be nice.

"I'm sure that whatever you saw was awful, but we need to make sure it doesn't happen again. It would be much more awful if it was repeated elsewhere. Can you tell us what happened?"

She kept her voice calm, but she knew that being charming to others was not exactly her strongest point. She was more of the action sort. Maybe one of the other does would have something more pleasant to say.

Dryxel was a little shocked when the small doe did not come along to help with the tree. Maybe she had seen something more interesting that needed interrogating. Turning his attention back to the log, him a couple of other nouls moved the log into place.

As they looked into the hole they spot two dark color faeries, which reminded Dryxel that Sage still had not shown up. It took a few minute to convinces the poor scared creatures that they were not in any danger now. But once they came out anynoul could see that they were tariffed.

Their clam of the creatures not being able to climb was a good thing to back away not that a noulicorn could climb either but it was still some hope and helpful information. Dryxel once again though of sage and wished he would hurry up and come help them. In this case he would be great to have around to be the eyes in sky on this track.

Dryxel turned his attention back to the faeries once again with the hope that they might be able to give more information about these creature. But he knew he would have to handle them with care this seine was a nightmare and he was asking them to relive it in there minds which could be hard for them. Clearing his throat, Dryxel who had no charm bone in his body tried to calmly ask "Can either of you tell us anything more?" It was not the best or smoothest question but they had a job to do too.

charming the faeries

[i'm not entering for the faeries!]
___________________

At least thirteen nouls, five of them ascended...and there was still so much blood. Cattleya shuddered, though she tried to pass it off as a twitch of her muscles as she caught a sound - the sound of faeries talking, actually. It was a good thing everyone else was so dedicated to this task.

A large group of noulicorns - including a few of the adepts she'd seen over at the dance - had gathered at a knot in a tree. They were close enough she could hear the conversation - whatever had been resurrected couldn't climb, and it was terrifying. But they all seemed to have the questioning well in hoof, and besides, Cattleya noticed something a bit more concerning. Some of their group must have wandered off, and this was definitely a bad time to be wandering. She addressed the buck she'd been questioning first, though. "Thank you very much - that's super helpful. I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of this. Whatever was resurrected - surely, like familiars and dire rats, they're intelligent. Maybe they're just...confused right now." That was why the lifebringers preferred to have noulicorn guides present for familiars, right? It didn't exactly sound convincing to Cattleya yet, either, but she hadn't seen what was going on.

Anyway - it seemed safe enough here, though whatever that had been might come back later. "I'm going to make sure that our group doesn't wander too far," she said thoughtfully, raising her voice a little higher so that the others - including the faeries - could all hear, too. "I know there were a lot of nouls here for the ceremony, and all of this carnage must've been shocking. But the Homewood is strong, and we have plenty more nouls, who've all faced down a lot of danger here on Vykeli. The Lifebringers were caught by surprise, but we can always get more help."

She stayed farther back from the tree the faeries had situated themselves in, and didn't add to the barrage of questions - that didn't seem very helpful, and maybe hearing calming words would help the faeries feel confident enough to answer the group's many questions. Instead, it was important to keep an eye out for where the rest of the group had gone. She didn't recognize anyone by name, but she'd certainly seen two more adepts before, and a doe with a bright pink coat.
