"I really dislike bullies. How about I take control of your mind and make you start beating yourself up?"
Luna's left eyebrow went up, a habit she'd picked up from her father.
"While repairing and maintaining those systems is a bit out of your league, the operation is pretty simple. I don't know if you've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ryan, but he made the comment that operation of computers hasn't changed much. He's not from our Universe."
She picked up another padd, which contained a list of vacant positions.
"What kind of networking are we talking about, here? What kind of computer skills do you have?"

"I have not met this Mr. Ryan, but that's certainly comforting to know. It was uncomfortable without anything beyond what I cobbled together."
She picked up another of those tablet devices and seemed to be scrolling a bit through it as she asked him to detail what he'd meant as he talked about his computer abilities.
"Maintaining the hardware and software, dealing with issues with the operating systems. I had to cobble one together after the war. I worked on networking computers together both digitally and physically, and feeding video and audio through those connections. I learned some of everything we did."

She chuckled.
"Mr. Napier, how would you like to run my CIC? Stands for Combat Information Center. You'd take the data received from the sensors, then send what you think is vital to either my Tactical Officer, my Helmsman, or myself. CIC is only manned in combat situations or emergecies, so the data is pretty straightforward. For example if there are three enemy craft approaching, your job would be to tell the Tactical Officer which one you think is the greatest threat, the moderate threat, and the lowest threat. You pretty much point out targets for the gunners and the TO."

He just sort of sat there and looked for a moment. That wasn't exactly a light offer, even if she ended it with trying to make it sound like it was just basic target calling. The CIC was a major nexus of a combat ship unless he was seriously mistaken, and he wasn't being asked to work there, he was being asked to run the whole place. Even if it was pretty much all automated and he was the only one, it had it's own impact. Not only that she was trusting his word on his abilities and giving him that sort of position, but just how hurt this ship must really be, assigning major positions to civilians that had just come aboard. Falk as a replacement XO made sense, as liason, even if he wasn't sure how well the man would handle it, because it gave her a direct link to what was basically a separate faction with no ties to her. If they were here a while, she'd be wanting to fix up a division like that he expected.
"I'd be honored to accept that position, Ma'am. May I ask though, how bad is this ship? I've only seen some signs of damage inside, those transports don't have any way for those in back to see out."

She sighed, running her hands through her pink hair. She'd taken down the ponytail, so it look frazzled, all the way down to midback.
"As my the newest Senior Officer, I guess you have a right to know."
She picked up the padd she'd scrolled through.
"Engineering is down 75% of it's members. The engines are online, but the FTL drives are both down. The only weapons we have online are our starboard turrets. Our primary shields are holding at 38% and our communications array is being glitchy. Sensors are operational, though the Big Brother sensor suite needs repairs. There are multiple hull breaches and numerous crewmembers unaccounted for."
She set the padd down.
"Normally, we'd abandon ship and have the Unity towed, but we can't do that, so we'll have to make do. We have no idea where we are, or if help will ever arrive. We're as alone out here as your people were before our arrival."

Could she really manage to look more frazzled then she was now? Probobly, but it would take some serious work, she seemed to have been out and working for a while.
"No wonder you seem so stressed."
What else was there to say really? She and him both understood how bad the situation was, and he also understood why she'd prefaced it with the statement about him having a right to know pretty much only because he was now one of her Senior Officers. This was not pretty, and it was going to be a mess to deal with. At least they could keep morale up by not telling everyone just how bad it was.
"Well, were better off here then we were below, maybe we'll be able to help improve this situation."
The biggest positive, at least the people from below were better off here. They'd be grateful to those who had helped them. There wouldn't be many at all that wouldn't try to help wherever they could, and even without the skills, thirty minds, hands and eyes could make a difference, even untrained.
((Why do you fail me of something really good to say, brain? XD Well, it works, Gavin did just get hit by the fact the ship is pretty messed up))

"That's the idea. A lot of the important repairs are simply manual labor. Anyone can patch holes in the hull. That's what the able members of your people will be doing, alongside my people, teaching them. Any welders have already been assigned. They were fast-tracked through the screening and sent directly to the hull with experienced people, to do patchwork. I didn't like it, but it had to be done."
She rubbed her forehead.
"Once I handle the interviews, Falk takes over and I get some sleep. Your duty schedule consists of Alpha shift. You'll hold the rank of Acting Commander. Normally, you'f be a Senior Lieutenant, but the Beta Shift officer is one, and he;d have seniority. He's brand new to the post, so you actually have experience, which is why you;re an acting Commander. During Alpha Shift, when not actually engaged, you'll be trained and given simulations. The Unity runs a battle simulation every three days, regardless of condition. After Alpha shift, you;re free to do what you want. However, any time klaxons go off, you're to immediately report to the CIC. As a senior officer, you warrant your own quarters and you have lift priority in an emergency."

That explained why a couple of the people had been scooted away elsewhere when nobody but him was looking that way. They had been the people who legitimately worked as welders before all this, the same ones that had done most of the metal construction while they had fuel for blowtorches. As for everything about the work shifts and him being given an acting rank, senior to the other main officer working the opposite shift, he listened silently as she described his position, the battle simulations, lift priority, and so on, filing it away as it was spoken, so he could review it compared to what he knew as well as listen now.
"I believe I got all of that. About the only serious questions I have now is when are these two shifts and how will I find my way around the ship, or will I need to actively ask for directions?"
Beyond those two questions, everything else seemed fairly well explained and also self explanatory, between the rank, the peoples works, he'd find out more about the CIC once that training started. All he really needed to know right now was the time frames and if there was a way to navigate without asking directions. If the elevator was labeled with major locations he hadn't seen between his trips because people had been in the way every time.

There are three shifts, actually. Alpha, Beta, and Delta, each eight hours in length. Right now, we're in the end of Beta shift. Gamma shift, the lights dim to give a more nighttime feeling. The best way to describe it to you, You're working 7am to 3pm."
She handed him a third padd she had, though it was blank.
"That padd will give you directions to everywhere in the ship. It also contains the orders giving you your rank and position, in case anyone questions you. You'll also find your room assignment. it's a bit morbid, but you got the Alpha Shift CIC Officer's quarters. He died in the accident that did all this."
She leaned back, her eyes closing for a moment before opening up. again.
"All the lifts are voice controlled, though there is a removable panel with switches, in the event that the lift system loses power."

"I thought it made more sense to have three."
He more muttered to himself then to Luna, as he accepted the padd, looking the thing over. Checking for how to turn it on and all, hopefully a simple process. After all, he had to figure out how to work all this stuff soon enough.
"Thank you, this will help. As for the quarters, thank you for the warning. I've found out about the lifts."
He was actually rather used to living in the homes of the recently dead, using their beds and such. After all, everything in camp had belonged to someone else minus some small trinkets. Some of them would be uncomfortable taking the beds and rooms of the deceased, some of them wouldn't be. He was in the latter category.
"I know it probably doesn't help, Ma'am, but I'm sorry for all those people you've lost, whatever it may mean for us."
Life for life was never a fair exchange. They'd learned that as well, and so had the crew of this ship. Another source of friction, losing all those friends, to have their places filled so soon by strangers. Acclimatizing them to this ship and it's crew to their presence was going to be interesting.

She sighed, abesntmindedly playing with her bangs.
"I'm 325 years old. I'm used to having people die on me. It's horrible, but I'm used to it. It's the manner of being on a warship, after all."

He stopped for a moment with his fiddling with trying to activate the padd as Luna spoke, running that through his head a couple times as he went back to looking for a moment.
"It's not like it's gotten easier, watching people dying in front of me, and even if you are a lot older than me, I don't think it would. Getting used to it just sounds like you've learned how to keep it from affecting you when you can't afford the distraction."
He finally flicked the right spot, the padd's screen filling up with information, which he slid through some of, before digging up the rough 2-D ship map with a few short moves. At least now he knew where he was going.

She actually giggled, though at herself, more than at him.
"Yea, that sounds about right. I'm more worn out than I thought. Once I finish your group, I might retire and let Falk take over on the bridge till I get sleep. The Doctor will kill me if I do this much longer."

"No offense Ma'am, but I'd agree with the doctor. You look completely exhausted, and you've been through a lot from the sound of it. You probably should get some sleep, and soon."
He said that with a bit of a smile, the giggle had a certain effect. It brought the exhausted military captain look down to just an exhausted woman who really needed some sleep. It was an interesting change.

Her eyes went wide in false shock as she smiled.
"Oh, get out of here before I court-martial you, Commander."
She made a shooing motion at him, putting emphasis on his new rank.
