~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Amaranth waited for Sherlock's reply, she looked out the window once more, though it did nothing for her mood. She could see Sherlock's movements out of the corner of her eye and could tell that there would be no talk. She felt the familiar rumble of the carriage coming to a stop and prepared to get out. One of the returning students -Novae, wasn't it?- waved at her and Sherlock. The elf lifted her hand and gave a small wave back. She blinked as she watched a sadder expression fall over the girl's face and looked away when the tears came. She had seen enough tears to last her a lifetime. A small, very familiar voice called her name and Amaranth soon spotted Cosmo. She gave him a very small smile and wave in greeting. As she looked around, Amaranth saw familiar and unfamiliar faces. She followed behind Sherlock and squinted a bit against the bright light. She looked around, again noticing the new lake. Perhaps it would be useful. Her luggage was in her room, so she didn't have to deal with moving all the bags herself.
When October had arrived back home, things had become... Complicated to say the least. Her Mother had woken her from her sleep (just as she had returned home from Alive) that morning to tell her a woman from her new school was there to take her. Sitting up, she had talked with her Mom about why she hadn't told her. The end result was because her Mother felt it was a good choice for her, and not wanting to disappoint her Mom, October agreed to go.
As the woman waited, they packed her clothes up and set them aside. Within the half hour, all her clothes had been packed. When they went to the living room to drop off her luggage, October's mouth had almost dropped open. Sitting there had been Aonica, dressed professionally. She had never seen the Council leader outside of Alive and her customary robes. At that moment, it all made sense.
When they finally had piled her things into the car she noticed that in the backseat was also Izromos. He looked quite sick and hardly talked the entire time, far too busy trying to not lose his stomach. It was only to be expect since he had never been in a car before. The same had happened on their plane ride to the school (apparently, Aonica came from money and could afford her own jet).
When they finally arrived on the grounds, Aonica told Izromos to listen to October. She knew this world much better than he did. Then, things got moving.
"Here is your map of the grounds," Aonica said handing each of them a map. "And Princess, here is your schedule. Now, Arnold and Richard here will take up your belongs. Both of your rooms have been fully furnished," lastly, she pulled out a cell phone and handed it to October. "Use this when you need to contact me. If you need money or any such things. Izromos, if you want to return home, ask October to contact me and we'll help you get there. Humans traveling to Alive is easier for us than the natives." Understanding, Izromos nodded his head.
"Once the boys are done, I will be going. We will talk more later," Aonica said with a smile. Still not thrilled with the prospect of 'moving', October smiled trying to accept her new situation. She looked out at the grounds with interest and noticed a lake. How lovely. She noticed the gathering students not far off, seeing those who talked like old friends and those who were shy. October knew she would be among the shy. There was so many different races here, she could tell, and when she turned to address Izromos she noticed how tense he was. Mervids were not use to other races aside the ones in Alive, it was no wonder he was tense. Smiling softly, she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"If there is anything you need, just come and find me. I know this is odd, but I'm glad you are here with me." Izromos looked at her and visibly relaxed, returning the grin.
"Yes, Princess. Thank you," he said, his accent showing more. "Please, if you feel comfortable, call me Izro."
"Then Izro, you may call me October," with formalities out of the way, the two simply observed the area until Aonica spoke.
"Well, we'll be leaving now. Izromos, you are part of the staff and you need to head to the staff room. I hope you two enjoy yourselves."
With that, she got into the car and left. Giving one last glance to the lake which drew his attention, Izro bowed to October before leaving to find the staff room. Sighing, nervousness suddenly set over October. What would she say? All these people had been born royal, she had no blood ties to any such things. She couldn't walk up to them and strike up a conversation. But she didn't want to go to her room either. Taking a deep breath to settle her nerves, she decided to head towards a boy who appeared to be talking to himself. He looked young, maybe 12, but she couldn't be sure. As she got closer, she noticed he hadn't been talking to himself, but a tiny... Boy? He looked interesting to say the least and she couldn't tell what he was. He stood on top of an odd ball that October found peculiar. When she finally reached them, she smiled to the white haired boy and then crouched down in front of the tiny creature, giving him (or her) a large smile.
"Excuse me, I hate to be rude, but I'm new here and I don't know my way around," adjusting her sun hat so she could look into the others eyes, she continued to speak. "I don't like maps and... Well, you two look like someone who would be willing to help me out. Plus, you seem so friendly with each other," she said as she moved her head to flash her smile at the other male. "My name's October, like the month. Maybe you could help me out?"
~Prince Cosmo Katamari~
The Littlest Prince of the Stars
A big shadow appeared, blocking out Cosmo's view of the sky. He toppled backwards off his katamari ball as someone in a lovely dress and a big hat walked up and crouched down before him and Gearvin. "Oof!"
He straightened up, brushed the dirt off his tush, and looked up at the person talking about maps and calenders. She was very pretty; with kind eyes the color of the sky and jewels on her ears and at her throat that sparkled like the stars of his home. Immediately taken with her, Cosmo giggled a bit before regaining his composure.
"Hi, miss lady!" he said, waving. Wait. That's not very princely. He tried again, sweeping her a bow. "I'm Cosmo, and this is my friend Gearvin, and we're sophomores," he said, beaming brightly at her. "Where do you need to go?"
Gearvin was going to comment about horses and his continued belief on their unsteadiness when he noticed a girl walk up. He smiled, suddenly feeling very short, and stood to be more proper. Well, at least as proper as he could be. Who knew what the girl's customs were? He bowed a bit, equal to equal, and nodded towards Cosmo and himself. "Yeah, we could help you. Though some of the Academy's changed from last year." He didn't want to remember the last year and the events that caused so much strife in the school, but denying it actually happened was not a good way to go. Instead, he ignored the flash of memory and straightened out.
"Like Cosmo said, where do you want to go? We could help by maybe giving a tour or something if you really want to. At least it goves you a basis for where things are, instead of guessing." He immediately recalled his own first day, and his mad scramble to get to Riding, only to realize he was trying to go to the wrong class. It nearly made him blush, but it immediately stopped when he recalled Alisha. He didn't blame her, not in the slightest, but for him, it had crushed him. Especially the last kiss she gave him, in farewell. That had been the first class he had met her in, to be honest, and it made him miss her all the more. "Well, just say the word, October, and we can help lead you to your destination. There's nothing going on right now, so we have the time, though I think Cosmo was gathering things for something or another."
"Oh!" Remembering that he had indeed been on quite the mission before spotting Gearvin, Cosmo kicked his katamari ball. The rainbow spots faded to blue as all his collected sticks fell off the ball, collapsing to the ground.
"I was, I needed, just, you know, sticks," he said sheepishly, scuffing his little shoe. "I'm small so I can't use a lot of the furniture here and I was gonna make a chair out of sticks since I don't have a chair that'll fit me right now... but that's ok! Maybe later I can go to the city and get a real chair."
He kicked the ball again. The spots flickered back to life as he hopped on. "Just say the word and we'll take you wherever!" he piped cheerily.
"Cosmo and Gearvin," October said their names to get a feel about it. They were interesting names, unique like her own. "I like the sound of that. Your names, that is. They're very beautiful," she said as she moved to stand up. "I think I'm a Freshman, but honestly, I'm not sure. Technically, I would be a Junior this year, but that's a different topic," she laughed lightly even though she honestly wanted to crew out Aonica, the woman who had sent her to the Academy.
Suddenly, she blinked realizing both boys had bowed to her. If Eero was here, I would never hear the end for not curtsying, she thought as she gave a quick curtsy. "You'll have to forgive me, for my poor manners, I always forget to curtsy. And to answer your question, I would love a tour. Would hate to get lost and everything. The size of this place kind of reminds me of Easeway Castle... Er, that's where I stay. Um, it's complicated, but let's just say I'm a part time Princess," realizing she had been sputtering on, October lowered her head in embarrassment, suddenly feeling very shy. "Anyway, I would greatly appreciator if both of you would accompany me on a tour," she said softly as she looked down at her sandals, hat shading her face.
"OH! OH! OKAY I KNOW WHAT TO DO!" Cosmo hopped up and down, plotting out his favorite, well-rolled routes through the grounds and around the buildings. "Okay we can walk around the lake and head to the stables and then we can stop by the dining hall for lunch or dinner whatever's closest and then we can check out the classroom building and swing by the ballroom and—"
He paused. Is the ballroom still... like, standing? Maybe they'd skip that. "Well we can go over it at least. And then we can go to the dorm rooms and drop off your stuff and go to bed!"
Cosmo hopped from one foot to the next, excited to get started. "How does that sound?"
Viola stood for a moment leering after her fiancée before losing her tightly-clenched grip on the parasol she held and letting out a quiet sigh. So this was how things were going to be, hmm? She had resigned herself to so much recently that giving up on fighting against the animosity he held for her was almost too easy. Her black eyes, still squinting from the light, shifted around to take in the assortment of students; the boys, the two from the carriage, the mouse of a boy that called out in a loud, high voice… and the girl who stood crying. Her lips twitched downward into a frown. A flicker of sympathy coursed through her that she wished she could push aside, tinged with jealousy that the creature could try so openly. Were people not expected to keep tears for their private hours here? She spent a long while looking at the girl with the short blond hair with wide eyes, wondering what sort of creature she was, where she had come from. She shifted in her place, wanting to approach but unnerved by the small gathering of students around her. Biting her lip, she decided to hold back- there would be plenty of time, they had all year after all.
She tore her eyes from the scene and darted off in quick little steps to the shadow of a large tree before vanishing into it, headed for her room and hopefully a little less sunlight.
Princess Aurelie C. Neustria
of Mount Aetherea
Freshman
The school grounds were large enough to allow Aurelie some solitude during her trek. Although she enjoyed her interactions with her classmates, she still needed some time to properly assimilate all the new information, but most importantly, she needed some time to relax and just be herself, the nature loving girl always looking to explore new lands. Of course, bringing her swords were only an extra precaution. The administration had said that dangerous beasts were hunted down regularly should they step foot on academy grounds, but that implied that if any did pop in, there would be a small delay between its presence and its removal.
She had kept to the shadows up until now to reduce the amount of heat her body had to endure even as the afternoon sun dimmed. She was starting to regret her choice in civilian clothes due to how much warmer they were in comparison to her dress. As Aurelie took one last turn amongst the trees and saplings signaling the edge of the woods, Aurelie caught sight of a woman vanishing into what appeared to be thin air.
"By the Gods," she let out in her native French and quickly slipped out of the bushes' covers, revealing her presence to all who decided to scan the scenery around the lake, to take a better look at the spot the woman had vanished. She did not find anything out of ordinary, going as far as to kneel down and and give ground a few taps. Seeing as it required more detailed inspection, Aurelie stepped behind the tree to shed off her extra jacket and the swords she had kept at her waist by the means of a leather belt.
It left her in a body-fitting pair gray slacks and tight shirt that have been specially made by her people. The art of Weaving behind the fabric's origins was still unknown to Aurelie but all she knew was that it was made to complement Spellweavers' ability to shift into energy. It could turn physical or immaterial depending on its wearer's physical state, ensuring that she would not be stark naked once she shifted back into her physical form.
It was in her energy form, incorporeal and glowing a dim golden, that she stepped, or glided, back into the shadow of the large tree. She had to make things quick as she could not remain in that form for long, but it allowed her to feel energy and magic around her and release the extra energy she had accumulated as body heat.
She could feel residual traces of magic, but barely a fleeting caress. It felt as though it was fleeing from her whenever she tried to reach for it with a glowing hand, as though it was the shadows themselves fleeing from the light she emanated.
Prince Novae of Washington
Novae continued to observe the both of them. After a few moments, her stoic expression lightened up and her bright, blue eyes lit up once more. She smiled at them both, "Lord Kenton and Duke Vincent. It's a pleasure. My name is Novae, like an exploding star. I am the princess of Washington," she said.
Novae looked back at Kenton and noticed how on-alert he was, "Don't worry about me," she said with a slight chuckle, "I wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, I'm not that keen on violence." Although this was true, Novae still found it ironic. Just a year ago, she was short-tempered and ready for a brawl at anytime.
She looked into the reflexion of Kenton's eyes and realized why he was weary. She quickly got out her handkerchief and wiped her eyes once more, "Do pardon me. Crying in public is unbecoming, I'm told. I overheard your conversation earlier. That night was my first ball. That was the first gown I ever wore..." she shook her head, "That is a conversation for another time. If you don't mind my prying, what happened to your face?"
Kenton returned her smile, thinking. Where was Washington? Was it a sovereign state or kingdom? He'd have to brush up on his geography. Her accent certainly didn't sound like anything he'd hear east of Crescent Tide. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Madam Princess."
He shifted his weight anxiouslyl as Novae spoke about her temperament and memories of the past year. It seemed she was all right physically, but... He respectfully squared his shoulders to her, drawn to her lovely eyes. "I apologize if we disrupted your walk with our discussion," he said. "I assure you, it was not intentional." It made sense that it had upset her, if what he'd heard was at all true.
Kenton put his hands behind his back, lacing his thumbs together in a resting stance. "Dragon claws," he said, trying to keep it short and sweet to avoid upsetting the princess further. "My kind have been at war for eight years and I have been at the front lines until very recently."
All traces of shyness immediately left October the moment Cosmo started to talk about all they could do and see. My, this little Prince is quite friendly, she thought as she raised her eyes to look at him with a smile. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe she would make friends, and maybe she'd learn something despite her dire efforts to not want to. Seeing someone this excited to be back for his second year made October think that maybe whatever dark thoughts and feelings she had about this mysterious place were wrong.
All in all, she was glad she had come to these two boys. They were friendly and kind, even adorable in their young ages. Or, so October assumed by their height.
"Yeah, that sounds great," she said then turned to Gearvin, about to ask him a question. But as she faced him, she felt a chill of cold air, making her thought process stop. Cold, in summer? It seemed to radiate off him in waves. Strange...
Then, for the first time since introducing herself, she noticed his appearances. "Gearvin, what race are you from?" He was interestingly beautiful. White hair, turquoise eyes, and... Were those ice crystals forming off of him?
"I mean, if you don't mind me asking," she said as she leaned closer to his face, completely forgetting this was a stranger she was talking to. The curious nature she had since childhood arose in her, making her want to find out what he was. "It's just that you have the prettiest eyes. I've never seen a human with that color before, nor any race from Alive," she said as she stared into the turquoise depths, seeming like a young child fascinated with the color.
Gearvin blinked. Even after a year of being around other races, it was still a bit odd to see people making a big deal about his appearance, though he was glad no one was making a big deal over his height. Although, that could be because they first met. He did straighten up a bit, scratching the back of his head nervously before stopping and straightening his hand out and returning it to his side. Nervous habit, one his father had said he needed to get rid of. "Umm, I'm a Glacien. My race is from the poles, and, well, most of us have different shades of blue. Or green." It definitely felt weird to be under scrutiny for his eyes though, and his hand itched to rub the back of his hand again.
Struggling to think of any other topic to go for, he realized she'd mentioned a place he'd never even heard of. He blinked, deciding asking about her homeland was a better alternative. "So, Alive? Is that your homeland? I've never heard anything about that place." Well, it wasn't like anyone had ever heard about his homeland either. Not many people want to brave the Arctic chill. "I bet it's pretty warm there. I know a lot of other students come from warm places."
Novae eyes widened with interest. On the inside, she was excited about the fact that dragons actually existed. Her maker had told her that they had died out thousands of years ago. She figured that it would be insulting if she showed enthusiasm toward Lord Kenton's foe, "I'm glad to see that it hasn't hindered your politeness. Welcome to the academy, nonetheless. I promise you, it's rather laid back..." she paused for a minute and smiled, "Most of the time," she said with a slight chuckle.
She had remembered what her maker had told her. "Sometimes the only thing you can do is smile. Even when you have to force yourself to do so."
She then began, "I do hope you find your stay here enjoyable. If you need anything of me, the both of you shouldn't hesitate to ask me."
Kenton nodded, checking the time: it was dimming outside, and their first informal dinner was approaching. He probably ought to report to the kitchens for duty soon.
"I hope to have a pleasant experience here," he said. "I expect we will have a quiet year with much to talk about after. Perhaps we will speak again at tomorrow's banquet? I should love to ask you about classes and what I can expect as a first year student."
He bowed to Novae, and then to Vincent. "Now, though, I must take my leave. I am working in the kitchens tonight, and cannot be late. Please excuse me, it has been a pleasure. Madam Princess, Sir Duke."
Kenton smiled, resumed his militant stance with one hand at his hip and the other behind his back, and turned heel to walk back to the kitchens.
