Squawking in dismay at the additional weight of the buck, the hawk brought her hard beak to bear, ripping at one of his ears; the only thing she could reach at this odd angle. Before she could attack again, though, there was a blur of white and she felt something hit her in the chest.

Shrieking and flapping her wings, not gaining any lift and unable to detach her talons, the hawk struggled with the weight of the young doe added to her already too-heavy burden.

That wasn't the end of her nightmare; however.

Two more does came barreling into her, and her grip gave way. Rolling across the earth and loosing quite a good number of feathers in doing so, it was only then that she felt the stabbing pain in her wing.

Broken. Perhaps when one of the flea-bitten, horrible creatures launched themselves at her. Screaming and screeching at them in her dismay as the rabbits all ran for it, she finally went silent when the last tail disappeared into the foliage.

The last thing she heard was the wet sound of jaws opening right behind her...

The fox dragged his hard-won kill back into his den, not that this bundle of feathers and bones was worth the hurt those sharp hooves had done. One of those rabbits would've been a far better catch, but the pain was just too much for him to be chasing them down in the forest right now.

But a bird with a broken wing? That he could do.

Yes, that he could do.
