There was a minor, crackling explosion in the little room on the east side of the Sun household.
A moment later, a lot of smoke and one Sun Huojin rushed out of the door frame and into the main household. He hadn't meant to start tinkering, especially not while wearing his festival clothes, but the Festival of Spirits always made him nervous. On this day of the year, the spirits were more present than ever, and as a superstitious person, Huojin was particularly concerned that he'd make a mistake and do something to offend them. Thus, nerves jangling, he tended to fidget. And when he fidgeted, at least when he fidgeted in his own house, he inevitably ended up trying to distract himself by tinkering with his firecrackers. This was sometimes disastrous
He heard his mother's soft footsteps rushing up the stairs and Huojin hastily tried to dust off his clothes like nothing had happened. One smell of the air would tip his mother off, but he and his workshop always smelled a little bit like an explosion had just gone off anyway, so if he just looked the part-
There was a throat clearing. Huojin looked up at his mother guiltily and offered her a smile. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I just got nervous," he explained.
"You always do," she replied, dusting him off herself and trying to fix his hair. "The spirits aren't going to be happy with you!"
"That's what I'm afraid of!" he wailed, trying to help her now. But she shook her head and marched him downstairs, ignoring his protests and saying, "It'll just have to do."
His family was waiting downstairs, a black ribbon on each member except for his grandfather, who wore both black and red to remember his wife. Huojin took a black and red ribbon too. "Maybe if I wear both, the spirits'll be fine with me," he explained hastily, and his father laughed.
"There was an incident, I see," he rumbled. Huojin's father had a deep voice like thunder. He was a big man, and Huojin, who was short anyway, still looked like a little boy next to him.
His mother sighed, "Isn't there one every year? At least we don't need to worry about Qi's nerves exploding on him." Qi actually enjoyed the Festival of Spirits. Their grandfather looked forward to it every year, and Qi parroted him faithfully, even if ghost stories could still make him cry sometimes.
Huojin shook his head, irritated at being compared to his little brother. "Let's go, let's go!" he urged. "If we wait any longer, our ancestors will get upset at us." And with that, he marched out into the street, back ramrod straight. Huojin was normally a loose cannon, but during the Festival of Spirits, he was afraid of even setting a foot out of line.
Unfortunately for him, he hadn't noticed one of his pet mice had snuck into his clothing and was peering curiously out from his pant leg.

Jianyu had been caught up trying to find out where the rest of his siblings had gone when he felt a gentle thump against his back as someone bumped into him. Turning his head, Jianyu twisted around, looking down at a young woman who was near to his own height, her head ducked in a respectful bow. The ivory color of her hair contrasted sharply with the dark of the fins on the sides of her head. It was unusual, but not unpleasant looking. Jianyu smiled at her greeting and inclined his head as well.
"May your loved ones find peace as well." he said, returning the sentiment. Next to him, Ligiu was tugging on his sleeve, looking impatient. "And do not worry about running into me; it is a crowded place, after all."
A familiar voice caught his attention, and Jianyu's gaze moved sideways, a wide smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
"Yue," he said cheerfully as she came to stand near, and he stepped over to her, kissing her cheek in a friendly greeting. "Yes, you remember my sister, Ligiu." Jianyu turned back to the light haired girl and tilted his head. "However, I have only just barely managed to make the acquaintance of this young lady here. If she would be so kind as to offer me her name, however, I would be glad to introduce her to you. And myself," Jianyu added, smiling at Li. "I am Qian Jianyu, and this is my little sister Ligiu. This lady over here is one of my closest friends, Yue Lao."
Jianyu caught another familiar voice carrying over the din of the rapidly increasing crowds, and he turned his head, his expression lightening as he saw his student coming towards him.
"Huang-Fu," Jianyu greeted him, leaning forward to press a quick kiss to his cheek as well. "Welcome; it is good to see you." There was another man, as well as a young lady standing with his student, and Jianyu offered them a small, respectful bow before turning to Huang with a slightly questioning glance. "Is this one of your brothers, Huang?"

"Thank you," Li replied politely to the dark-clad male, also dipping her head in apology to the younger female at his side. "My apologies--"
It wasn't unusual for one to call out to another familiar face, but she felt terribly out of place at the sudden arrival of a dear friend to her perfect stranger. When she was included in the greeting, she was surprised enough to give the brightly-clad newcomer a briefly doe-in-the-cross-hair look before bowing politely to her in turn. It was an odd element to step from formality to a somewhat more personal stance, but it seemed the dark stranger was fine with it. How...refreshing, the light-haired femme thought to herself, offering a small but intrigued smile to the two. It was a pleasant turn of events and not entirely unwelcome. Certainly she could spare a few minutes to return the kindness shown.
"Master Qian, Lady Ligiu." She turned to the two as she spoke their names, retaining her politely receptive smile. "Lady Yue." Lifting her hand, she pressed her slender fingers next to her collar bone and inclined her head. "SiMa Li, a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Formalities shared, Li wasn't really sure what type of polite conversation could be had with two close friends and family, but the two quickly became three - and four, making the young woman balk. If she didn't know better, she'd wonder if she hadn't just run into one of the Four Generals!
She wasn't certain if she should have been excusing herself then, seeing that Jianyu was attracting denizens like some sort of beacon, one she hadn't meant to bump into to begin with. Casting her dark purple eyes to Yue, she gave a slightly more nervous flicker of a smile, intoning, "He is well thought of amongst the people; how fortuitous." Clasping her hands by her stomach, she glanced around the immediate area that they seemed to be congregating at, asking in a more quiet voice, "I hope I did not intrude upon a gathering of friends." It was becoming a touch...awkward, especially as more Lunarians began to line the streets.

Yue Lao stepped up against Jianyu and embraced him, as she usually did, grinning wide. She didn't return the kiss, though her cheek was warm from where her best friend had brushed his lips against it. "Of course I remember her; how could I forget a sweetheart like Ligiu?" Yue smiled at Jianyu's sister, and asked her, "All ready for the festival, Ligiu? Is Yu gonna dance with you? If so, you're very lucky, I'd say...!" Yue grinned up at Jianyu, winking. She didn't give him all of her attention, though; Yue was not that focused. She turned her gaze back on the new acquaintance, and winked at her, too. "Yu is too good to me," she apologized, rubbing the back of her neck, smiling sheepishly. In the excitement of the meeting, she'd stopped tugging her cheongsam lower out of habit.
"Oh, sweetheart, you're so formal. It's only Jianyu, not like he's some fierce warrior or something..." Yue giggled and looked back at Jianyu, her eyes glittering. Instead of inclining her head or bowing, Yue blew SiMa Li a kiss, winking again. "All the same, he is most assuredly loved, and I am just as assuredly glad to make your acquaintance, too! Don't fret about a gathering of friends, we just happened to meet here; as far as I'm concerned, you're welcome with us," she grinned. Yue flipped her braid behind her shoulder again, and planted her hands on her hips, looking Li over.
Yue had recognized Huang-fu immediately as he approached, though she only remembered him as the friend of little lamb, which was the name she had given Kotone. She had never met the two that followed him, though. "I think I remember you, Huang-fu... Though you seem different, somehow," Yue grinned at him, offering him a sloppy salute in the place of the kiss she had blown at Li. "Not to mention I also don't recognize your companions, there," she admitted, though it was a given. It wasn't as though she had known Huang-Fu particularly well, though she did know he was important to Jianyu. That was enough to make her like him. If her best friend trusted this Lunarian, of course she would treat him as though he was family. As per usual, even when mourning may have been appropriate, Yue was all sunlight and laughter.

Huang turned his head to eye the crowd that joined Jianyu now, Including Yue Lao, His brother Xiao and Shu, Jianyu's little sister and a unknown female who Huang, staring at her, felt evenly comfortable with. It was odd sensation but he had no fear of the unknown woman at all and instead gave her a tilt of his head before turning to answer Jianyu.
"Ah, Yes this is my benefactor and Oldest Brother Xiao, The first Son of the Lee family," Huang stepped to the side for his brother to come up and bow, "And the woman next to him is future wife Shu. We have come to honor her families deaths over our own since she has no one else." Huang gave Shu a soft smile as she curtsied before turning to the girls.
"Well Met Yue Lao, It is a pleasure to see you again after the incident. Though I did not know you were well known with Jianyu as well!" Huang tilted his head at her and chuckled, though his face remained stoic, "Ah I have graduated from the academy to be a fighter in our emperor's ranks. And truthfully i feel a bit older and more mature." Huang let a small smile cross his features before turning to the other woman. He studied her only for a second so not to be rude.
"Hello Ma'am." Huang gave her a polite bow before meeting her eyes, "I am Huang-Fu Lee of the Lee legions, I am a acquaintance of Lady Yue Lao and the Student of Master Jianyu, May I inquire to who you are?" He rose from his bowing position to wait for her reply, his face expressionless as much as his voice was.
Xiao on the other hand was staring at Jianyu like a child seeing the world for the first time. "My My, My brother sure has been studying under a very young but capable Captain! Look Shu how he looks dashing so Formal." Xiao circled Jianyu enthusiastically before noticing that Huang was talking with more people, "My My again, Huang is certainly talkative. I remember a time when he would only speak with sign language, Do you remember Shu?" Xiao moved around the group introducing himself and Shu as well even after Huang did. So excite for his brother that he had almost forgotten his manners.

At the sound of his name Cais turned his head abruptly. The voice was feminine, something he wasn't used to outside of Hein which threw him off. His eyes found her quickly and he immediately fixed his posture to match her elegant stride. "Yes, that's me." His voice was rather somber while his mind raced to find a name to match her face. "Shin-Mu, correct?"
It had been a long time since someone had approached him out of the blue, and it was pleasant to see that it was a friendly, familiar face rather than that of some shady Lunarians he had met. "I have seen you around. It's nice to meet you properly." He shot a weak smile towards her and glanced back to his family which had seemed to quicken their pace while he remained steadfast in taking it slow.
"I do have to say that the idea does contradict itself. Not that death shouldn't be celebrated, but not every memory of those who have passed is positive. I think it brings out many negative emotions. Painful emotions." He stopped, petting the back of his hat nervously. He felt foolish to already be talking to his classmate in such a manner before actually getting to know her. Though he was comforted by the fact he was at least aware of her name, he wasn't sure how it would be taken to ramble on about his personal beliefs, especially to a near stranger.
"I'm sorry for rambling..." The words came from his mouth softly while he cast a look of unrest towards the ground while he walked. "So, are you here with your family too?" He desperately wanted to change the subject away from venting his judgments of the festival on her to actually talking with her. He was severely lacking in friends he could relate to and though this was their first time speaking, he suspected her to be a Noble and therefore a "friend" in that regard. Not to mention talking to her could easily distract his mind away from the negativity rising in him. He coughed lightly, looking to her in anticipation as they continued on their way.

Kiran walked along Main Street, taking in the sights of the festival. His sister continued to cling to his arm, dragging from one spot to next whenever something caught her attention. As much as she liked going to festivals, she felt nervous around such a large crowd. As long as he was there, Kiran could do all the talking for her; thus, saving her from potential teasing should someone discover her inability to speak. Not everyone teased her about it, but enough bullies did to make her worry about it.
As they continued down Main Street, Kiran caught sight of a few familiar faces. He recognized Yue Lao but decided against going to say hello to her when he saw the people she was with. Jianyu wasn't so much the problem. Kiran had fun annoying the man and could hold an oddly civilized conversation with him, if he tried. But after their first and only encounter, Kiran doubted Huang would care to see him again. Kiran didn't mind picking a fight, but Xiuying was with him. And he didn't want to upset any of the souls being honored during the festival, lest he incurred their wrath. The Festival of Spirits was one of the few times when Kiran tried to be on his best behavior.
Kiran hurried along past that grouping. Xiuying stumbled along, trying to keep up with his increased pace. She nearly tripped and fell when she stepped wrong in her geta. With quick reflexes, Kiran caught her and helped her regain her balance.
"Sorry," he said with a cringe, hoping the stumble hadn't hurt her.
But Xiuying only shook her head with a smile stretched across her face. Apparently, the festival had her in too good a mood to let it be spoiled by a little stumble.
When they started down Main Street again, Kiran paused, catching sight of another familiar face. "Hey!" he called out, waving his free arm widely to get the attention of the other. "Xiu!" He started to make his way over to the boy. If he saw the procession of monks, he gave no notice of it, or even stop to think that he might be acting rudely by calling out to one of the members in that procession.

She smiled, pleased he knew her name, and nodded. "Yes." In the past it would have never have occurred to her to approach a relative stranger, not without sound reason, and that she'd so willingly addressed Cais was quite out of her usual nature. Or perhaps previous nature. So much had been happening in her life as of late, perhaps something positive has come from all the negative. "Oh yes, I agree." Following his glance to his family, she wondered if perhaps he would speed off to catch up to them.
That wasn't the case though, and Shin listened quite intently as he spoke. Palms smoothing over the mother of pearl silk that covered her abdomen. Smoothing away any wrinkle or imperfection, no matter how minute. He had a valid point. She herself had always assumed death should be a somber, sad affair. Personally, in tune to the spirits as she was, her views on the matter were skewed. She'd also never personally lost anyone to death, and that too left her with in inadequate opinion on the matter. Any experience she could speak of had come from books or stories, and within those pages, death was mourned through sorrow and tears, not celebration.
Snow brows rose at his apology. "No apology necessary, I did express interest in the topic when I spoke." She would have been happy to listen to him talk further on the subject, curious if perhaps he'd lost someone. How they dealt with that lose. She let him change the subject though, despite it turning down a path she wasn't all that pleased about.
"No. I'm on my own, mostly." Another sweep of delicate fingers tugged embroidered silk into place. A habitual gesture she never quite lost, and it grew more prominent when at ease. "Unless you share my gift for soul magic, you'll not sense or hear him, but my music teacher and guardian will be with me." She understood that it was not the norm for people to commune with the dead, but she did not grasp that the presence of a spirit could potential make someone uncomfortable. "He's made himself scarce, for now."
Chances were good other specters would join the late orchestra player, both familiar and unknown alike. They tended to flock to Shin, eager to whisper in the ear of someone that could listen. She didn't mind though, she quite liked the attention.

The sun was higher in the sky and the Benjirou household had been quiet for a while now. The once rustling with life home died down after they said their good byes prior. Masanori, Het-Heru, Tsutomu and Fumio left first thing in the morning; dressed in festive yukatas, not exactly matching but you could tell they were a family. Junichi stayed behind, dressed as well, but he was put in charge of making sure Eiji came. Before leaving Het-Heru let out a sigh before speaking, “Junichi, please make sure your brother attends on time.” Junichi waited idly around the halls, adjusting his yukata over and over again while waiting a bit longer before going in to wake Eiji himself.
Surprisingly Eiji was actually dressed and already outside. He was behind their home, looking up at the sky lost in though, with Sumu at his feet. Eiji was dressed in a custom designed yukata based off of a favorite happi of his. With it was a black ribbon. Putting the ribbon aside fora moment, subconsciously he had to stand out in one way or another; be it in the proper or improper sense mattered not. He chose to not match the rest of his family. Before the academy with the label of one of the sides, noble or legion, he was great friends with lunarians who ended up as either or. Never one to care about what you were he carried with him today the sorrow of his passed family generations, no one in particular, his friends and his friends families. The expression he wore was a stranger to his face and personality and one he never expressed openly or comfortably.
Junichi had found Eiji, after going into his room to find him gone, but said nothing until Eiji acknowledged that he was ready to leave himself. Sumu rubbed up against Eiji’s leg to conform him and Eiji answered by bending down to stroking his head. "...let’s get going..."
The streets got busier and busier as the morning grew on. It's best assumed they were "late" on their mothers watch but nothing she could do about that now. A scolding will probably come after the festival is over, but what does that really matter. The two brothers walked side by side, with Junichi to Eiji’s left. “Don’t worry Sumu, be at ease for now. You can stand at his left later.” Junichi smiled as he stroked Sumu’s head and his cheek.
“Mother and Father said we didn’t have to catch up to them right away but at some point today they wanted to see you, Eiji.” Junichi said at random. ”I’m sure they did.. Eiji replied back, a bit somber. Hands folded in front of him, “Eiji, this is esse-” Junichi started before being abruptly interrupted. ”I know what you're going to say so don’t waste your breath.” He knew very well what his brother was about to say to him and saying it would solve nothing. In a sense, take the situation kind of like someone waking up on the wrong side of the bed. You don't plan on it, it just happens.
Sumu looked up as he trotted in between the brothers. Junichi didn’t comment like most would, instead he grabbed Eiji’s wrist and picked up the pace. “Come on. You’ll be fine once you get in the middle of a crowd.” He smiled, a trait he wish he had himself. "This is a celebration after all." The best he could do at this point for his stubborn brother, and his unusual slump he was in, was to get him around more lunarians. He’d spring back somehow.
Sumu, almost being left behind, ran after them with a meow.

The monks were in a good mood (like always) and had no issue with Kiran running through them. Ming, a man more on the outside of the group, noticed the boy first and tapped his brothers’ shoulders to get their attention. Everyone laughed, murmuring the typical festival greeting as Kiran and his sister passed through them
“Kiran, hello!” Xiu replied after Master Ziye had given him a nudge. The youth had still been deeply in thought concerning things over last year and he hadn’t been paying attention to much else. Granted, he should have been worrying more about his new tiger cub back at the temple, but he’d left Bai Hu asleep and had assured himself the cub would be fine.
“I didn’t think you were so brave.” The student continued on with a teasing laugh. “Most people would have steered clear of such a large group. It’s good to see you though. Are you enjoying the festival?” Xiu wasn’t sure if stopping to chat was good or not. The monks did have places to go and another tap to his shoulder assured him of this. He looked up to his Master and nodded in understanding. Stepping a bit closer to Kiran, the monks started their walking again, moving around the youngsters like water.
“I’ll catch up with you all later!” Xiu cried, giving a wave and receiving many jovial ones in return from his family.
Meanwhile, a certain little stripped feline had chewed his way through his leash and had bound out of Xiu’s bedroom window. The cub felt certain that he shouldn’t be uninvited to the festival just because he had one little hurt paw. There were mice and other treats to be had in such places and the tiger would be darned if he didn’t get his chance at them.

"Huh?" Kiran asked lamely. Only after the comment did he actually take note of the other monks around them. He glanced at the monks to Xiu to his sister then back to Xiu. Xiuying blushed darkly, embarrassed enough for the both of them.
Kiran rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand and cast his gaze downward in mild embarrassment. "Sorry. Did I interrupt something?" If Xiu had monk duties to attend to, Kiran didn't want to take up his time. Usually he was very good at observing his surroundings. But he had been excited to be able to bump into the boy again that he hadn't given much notice to whom Xiu was with. His main intention was merely to greet Xiu. Kiran watched as the other monks passed them by and continued on their way. "Is it okay for you to hang out here? I mean, I'm not making you break some monk code or something, am I?"
"Ah, yeah," Kiran answered with a grin. "It looks like it'll be another great festival this year. Are you enjoying it so far?" A nudge at his side caught his attention. Xiuying stuck close to his side. "This is my sister Xiuying," Kiran introduced, and his sister bowed her head to Xiu. His parents were likely somewhere around, also enjoying the festival, but Kiran and Xiuying had ventured off on their own.

The look Li gave Yue Lao was somewhere between polite puzzlement and quiet bemusement. "Only, you say, but he looks to command the respect of many," she laughed quietly, the sound low and understated, the likes of which was abruptly cut into a surprised silence at the kiss. Li blinked her wide eyes at the young woman before more laughter followed - lighter, but no less quiet. "You are...very...generous." The statement came with stifled laughter lacing the words, a slight grin dimpling her cheeks. "I think it's fair to say the pleasure is all mine." Li could not have begun to contemplate how fortunate she was to have made such a simple blunder just then.
When Yue Lao looked to Huang, so too did Li, appraising him with the same silent comfort that the other felt unbeknownst to her. His demeanor was familiar to her, a quiet and somewhat formal stature that she could empathize with. Maybe she was misreading him, but it wasn't something she had much time to think on as he introduced himself. Li's pleasant neutrality remained on her features, but her eyes suddenly sharpened by the time he was done. She bowed in return, posture straight with snowy hair cascading back and forth over her half-bare shoulders. "I am SiMa Li, Master Lee, and...if you are the student to Master Qian..." She hesitated, though it was more in a way that barely dared to believe the situation than any type of uncertainty.
"Are you and your companions Legion, then?" The words were spoken softly, easily missed if attention was elsewhere. The last thing Li wanted to do was incite some sort of war with Noble passerby's who had no concept of tradition. She would not undermine the fallen and the respect they deserved, she simply wished to know if the three strangers were going to be more intimately known than she had previously anticipated.

Enlei sat as straight as she could, staring into the mirror. She made a few final adjustments; tucking this strand of hair behind her ear, smoothing out that crease in her qipao. It was dark purple silk with icy gray-blue flowery swirls; the cloth hand-woven by her mother, the embroidery by her grandmother years ago before she'd lost her eyesight. For what seemed like the longest time ever it had been just a little too big for her, but now it fit her perfectly. The young girl smiled and admired her reflection for a few seconds, then picked up her purse and stood up.
The house was quiet by now; the servants had been given leave to attend the festival, and her parents had left at dawn. Humming a song she'd picked up from somewhere, Enlei walked down the staircase, enjoying the feel of the smooth wooden railings under her fingers. She had always had mixed feelings about the Festival of Spirits; though it was a celebration, she could not celebrate death. Every year at Grandpapa and Grandmama's graves she'd cry buckets just from being overwhelmed by the memories. It wasn't to say she didn't think about them at other times; just that looking at their graves, again, reminded her that they were gone.
"Jiejieeeee, I'm ready!" Ruishan's voice jerked her out of her thoughts, and she quickened her step, running to meet him. He looked adorable, she thought, in the midnight-blue changshan, though it was a little too big for him still, the sleeves hiding his hands. Her mother always had a tendency to make clothes bigger, so they would last longer- especially the festival clothes that they only wore once a year. Kneeling, she fussed over his clothes, re-tied the black ribbon around his arm, then gave him a hug. Pausing for a while, Enlei made a mental checklist: pigeons fed, purse in her hand-- was that all? Probably.
"Let's go, then, or we won't have enough time to look around before meeting up with Papa and Mama." Ruishan ran ahead, leaving his sister to lock the gate, though she caught up with him soon enough. They walked side-by-side, Ruishan practically sticking to his sister. She laughed at him, ruffled his hair, then reached out to hold his hand.
"Stay close to me, Shan." Together the siblings walked out onto the main street, joining the crowd.

Soul magic. Cais thought to himself, watching her subtle movements. Looking around himself he grew slightly nervous at the prospect that a spirit could be lurking close to him. Looking back to her calmness soothed him quickly and he nodded to her. "I haven't met someone with a gift of soul magic. I mean, I know of them. I find it mysterious and fascinating."
Cais knew very little about soul magic. What he had learned was what was mentioned through the Academy and stories. He had many questions to ask about it, but felt those questions should wait for another day, in another setting.
He turned, watching his family turn a corner. Though every festival spent before had been with them, this year felt different to him. He shot a glance back. "If you would like, I wouldn't mind having company for the festival." He smiled slightly, something he thought he wouldn't be doing all day. "Only if you would like to though, I don't want to impose if you have plans. I know the festival keeps everyone busy and there's a lot to do.
Cais was feeling better now, her calm demeanor in turn had calmed him. A nice change of some of the overzealous girls he had met in the past. He wouldn't mind getting to know her better, maybe even perhaps making a friend in the midst of a Festival he didn't quite understand.
