It's art. Perhaps not the kind of art you'd see in secondlife but it's still art and that's what the people want. The getting rich part is bothersome but I suppose there are reasons for that other then greed.
Like, my great uncle. When he was growing up, food was scarce: so when he grew older and had money to buy food, he bought more then anyone could hope to eat.
It would be silly to do that on gaia, but it's possible.
Hey, so you know what i just found out?....
Gaia is privately-owned and makes NO profit reports ANYWHERE.
Which basically means that they avoid taxes out the wazoo, even though their employees pay taxes.
Simultaneously, Gaia has pretty much turned the site into a 'store', because you no longer build up the gold to buy items; you just buy cash shop trash and MC's until you can trade them in for a desired item.
At that, you know what else i think? I think the whole Transition from calling Donations Items(GASP, THAT'S LIKE SAYING VOLDEMORT) to Monthly collectibles has to do with making their sale of PIXELS legal. I mean, seriously...how much effort did it take to program the items that we started with? the original items only had so many poses...
So think about it, at least 1000 ppl x 2.50= 2500.
That's more than a months rent, a car payment, insurance, utilities, and running a small server to maintain 1000 visitors.
With cash left over. over 12 months? with added users? forget about it.
btw, 1000 is obviously a small number, but that's based on how many people browsing gaia will likely buy an item in '03
