You don't have to take on Tres' idea of selling wholesale, but the fact is.. at some point there has to be an exchange.

Keep in mind. I have spoken on the concept of 'overselling' before.

Your character should almost never take an attack that wouldn't logically work on them.

Because you aren't playing your character.

However if your character would logically be hit by an attack, then don't think of this as a bad thing.

Think of this as an opportunity to add more flavor and more drama to the role play. Selling is illustrating how much that attack hurt, or how you were surprised about it, how it made you feel, what did it look like when it hit, and the entire gamut of drama that happens between fighters in a duel.

Overselling is as bad as not selling at all.

What usually ends up happening is that, people will use any and all method of getting out of taking damage even if its far-fetched and stretching the boundaries of what is considered logical or realistic.

The effect this has on the Roleplay is that it breaks immersion and destroys our ability to be engaged with the game.

The reason people do this is because they think that taking damage is the worst thing ever or they don't think much of it at all. They don't want to lose, which is natural.

However, we can avoid this by not thinking of being dominated, being injured, and feeling negative emotions like fear and worry, as bad things.

These are opportunities for role play and we should use them to improve the role play and to develop our characters.

Deitric knocked the s**t out of Tres's mouth with a lightning bolt in their fight a year ago. I sold the ******** out of it.

This year, Deitric was talking too much and Tres remembered what the indian had done to him a year before. So Tres imitated the khasmin and did something similar, smacking him in the mouth. Deitric sold for it.

And it was awesome. We brought it back and displayed character development. It added to the enjoyment of the experience. I'd like to think, but I can't put words in his mouth, that Deitric enjoyed it as well.

Yeah. Trust me, I know how people take any argument for any kind of selling and immediately reference "overselling" as if that's the only possible option all the time.

Everything in moderation, people! Words to live by!

Actually Crawley.

You got me.

I take it back. Overselling can be awesome in certain circumstances.

For a long time, I didn't really get what Dash was doing, but now I understand and I appreciate it.

Knowing when it may be appropriate to oversell depends on the context of the fight and the tone of the scene.

If its kind of a serious scene, then its probably not a great idea to oversell because it can break the immersion.

However if, you are going for that light hearted and jovial tone, then sure:

Oversell to your hearts content

Geez, you make me sound like I've never taken a hit in my life.

I give my opponent a hit if I can't think of a reasonable way to defend against it, given the nature and knowledge of the character in question.

In my fight with Slash (which I don't know how I won but w/e), I got my s**t wrecked by Dithakar. Boop here, boop there, boop there, oil, grappling hook, slam boop, boop on the head, oh s**t I'm being judo thrown over the shoulder by my neck. The end. Why? because Tyra doesn't know s**t about hand to hand. her idea of martial arts is gouging someone's eyes out or hitting them with something metal in as direct a manner as possible. My reward was Slash going 'whoop! I dodged!' to every axe attack. The only damage he took was because his Save VS Suck roll bombed, otherwise even Death Coil would have been shrugged off.

I've also given Fierach his fair share of hits so far when I felt I had no defense against them, and am rewarded by the same kind of BS.

TL;DR: Mutual Selling doesn't work, bro.

well .. an axe has a much better chance of ending the fight than a judo throw...

Mutual selling does work, but here's how I do it.

"I will sell in that what you do, I will acknowledge its effort, its potency, and its effect. I will not oversell it, I will exploit it, and I will do my very best to dismantle it and crush you, leaving you broken and shameful, because I respect you as an opponent.

I expect the same."

I don't need to go out of my way to sell what someone does, unless it's truly so one-sided a fight I literally -have- to sell. And then I've done so.

Like if you "sell" right, it doesn't kill your chances of winning a fight and it just makes the fight more organic and fun to read.

Taking RYUGI KAZAMARU for example, his fight against Athan is "selling," his fight against ... Wigi is no-selling. He scored incredible when he sold, he scored like a backwards a** child when he did not sell.
