I have read J.R.R Tolkien, and he almost never mentioned DARK elves. I agree that they arent particularly evi, at least not all of them, but it also has to do with the mindset; Dark Elves are more quick to anger, and use different magics.

*muches on his lunch while typing* well darkies are mean lol, they hate druidics like peoples and everyone in general most of the time. plus old prejudices when dark elves come to the surface world and slaughter elves that are defenseless (R.A. Salvatore reference, The Dark Elf Trilogy).

Tolkien's Dark Elves (The Moriquendi), aren't "Evil" as was mentioned before but just chose not to return to Valinor. They are called the Dark Elves because they never saw the light of the Two Trees.
The Drow are more "evil" I suppose. . . they are a very conniving race I suppose. Theirs is basically a purely "Darwinian" style socitey of "only the strongest survive". They are not blind by any means. Merely that they live underground so their eyes are extremely sensitive to light. They also have another alternate mode of vision which allows them to see in the Infrared Spectrum.
Then the Dark Elves. . . to be quite honest I don't know much about them. .. I'm assuming the Dark Elves that you all were talking about were of the Everquest type. They do appear quite like Drow, but I don't know their heritage and all that.
So yeah. . . there we go. Though all of this should technically go into the Elven Heritage thread. . .
Anyway, no need for everyone to get all defensive over such trivial matters.

Dark Elves, Drow, they are just names, both for the same race. It also depends on what fantasy game/book you are going off of. No reason to go all up and arms about though. Dark elves, as said before by Seldaara, are a very Darwinistic race, only the stongest surive. At birth, any with visible birth defects are killed immediatly. The blind are killed, sick, weak, stupid, whatever the flaw, they will be killed for it. They aren't really even that evil, they just think that only the strong should survive. Hence their hate for surface elves. They are much weaker than drow, and thats where the feud comes from. Most elves hate drow because they were raised that way, although some simply love dark elves, and have meshed with their society, being strong that is. That is another reason the dark elves get along with other evil races, because they also have the same viewpoints. But this is all fantasy, and doesn't really matter all that much.
