Better of Two Evils Yes, we do have a lot of people in the U.S. that overdo Christianity. It's quite sad really, but there isn't a lot the rest of us can do about it, since all of our politicians must at least act like they're extremely religous. You can only dare to go for presidency or any other political job if you're married and have kids, right? Reminds me of the last elections when the votes for Bush exploded, just because he was kissing his wife in front of the camera... xp Luckily people here dont only vote for who looks best/nicest/most charming. At least I hope so... Gerhard Schröder looks better than Angela Merkel (in my opinion) but still it was her who got elected. Oh, and you know the mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit? "Ich bin schwul und das ist auch gut so!" WellzY cucoriedka my french roommate gets nuts when i eat my wurstbrot in the morning... and i roll my eyes when i see her dipping her croissant in her coffee... That mental images make me chuckle. A German and a French, sharing breakfast. They might look the same, but their meals is so starkly contrasted, it seems alsmo farcical. Its quite fun actually, she makes fun of me beeing German and I make fun of her beeing French. xd WellzY And I'm actually Australian, not American. I'm even further away. gonk Hurray for Australia!!!! blaugh uhhh, let me stereotype!!! ok, all the young men there are extremely sexy because they surf every day! .... er.... yeah, thats basically it... xd Seriously now, Australia is one of the countries I absolutely have to visit, can't explain why. Is it the surfers? Is it Heath Ledger? Go figure... xd New Zealand too, I think I fell in love with the Kiwis (the birds). I might come to Australia next year, I applied for a student exchange programm. I would go to Prahran I think it was called, close to Melbourne. Let's see.... WellzY From what our German implies to us, there a lot more religious holidays in Germany, than we have in Australia, largely because of the Catholic influence. yes, there are tons of religious holidays and some states of Germany have more than others. Bayern I think has the most religious holidays. They're extremely religious.. oh, and it's them who wear Lederhosen (even nowadays, I saw a whole group of them on a bus... eek ) and drink a lot of beer ("a Hump'n" - half a litre of beer in a big glass)..... And the Oktoberfest is there too...

Well didn't the SPD and the CDU make a coalition for form Government? He could've beem Chancelor again, but the CDU still had more seats than the SPD, yes?
I forget now.
Ahhh, surfers!
It's true, we have a very long coast for which surfing is perfect, though I don't think there are all that many. I live in Melbourne, which is in the south, and the surfing in the city is terrible. There are places in the rest of the state which do have good surfing (Bells Beach for example) but it's not as big here because it's a lot colder than it is further north.
And I went to Prahran just last weekend, on Saturday. =D Be carful though, it's actually pronounced "per-rän". I used the umlauts, because it's just easier.
And I would love to go to Oktoberfest, sounds like a good experience, even though it's biased towards Bavarian Culture.

yes, CDU and SPD did a big coalition but it was clear from the beginning that SPD couldn't win.... but if the CDU (and Angela Merkel too) would've put a bit more effort in what they did, they could've gotten the elections without having to make a big coalition. Angela Merkel had the chance to put all the women and east Germans on her side, but she didn't even try.
Yes, you're in southern hemisphere, you've got winter now. Here we're frying in the sun... melting.... it's just too hot... gonk If i go there it will be in february, march and april. How's the weather then?I hope at least a bit warm... i dont want to go from one winter to the other... crying
sur..fers... (grrr, where's my drool icon??) na, just kidding.... I don't drool over every topless guy... ... ... ... ... ... ... yeah, right, I don't even believe myself... xd
I've never been to Oktoberfest but quite frankly I don't like drunk Germans... It's not even annoying or silly or stupid.. it's just sad. Of course (and luckily) not all of them are like that. But apart from that... "weisswurscht zurzeln" (you don't bite the weisswurst, you kind of suck it out of its peeling) and "laugenbrezeln" essen while drinking beer and listening to funny old german music sounds like fun.. biggrin

Riiiiiight. cucoriedka -- that's a fairly decent time to come to Australia, in most parts of the country. It of course depends where you are, but weather around that time here usually fluctuates between hot days (35) and cold days (15). But usually it stays around mid 20s, gradually getting colder. And I've heard about that sausage eating method! Strange. Suck? Strange. I'm not sure you could get a bigger inuendo.

If anything, it should prevent kidney stones......since ice will turn into water before it's even in your stomach(hopefully)...

Better of Two Evils That wouldn't make sense at all. If anything, it should prevent kidney stones......since ice will turn into water before it's even in your stomach(hopefully)... Yes, but the liquid is still cold. It's freezing cold beverages that, over time, will form kidney stones, supposedly. I heard that a person who drank ice-cold beer all the time and got frequent kidney stones went to his doctor, who perscribed... that he simply drink his beer warm. And he never got kidney stones again. Of course, I can't say that helped him out with his deteriorating liver. sweatdrop chocfudge I have at least one friend (and yes, she is German) who loves chewing on ice. Might be the oddball of the bunch, I dunno. A friend of mine went to do missionary work in Europe and said that when she was in Germany, she asked for a glass of just ice at a restaurant. The person just looked disgusted and slammed the glass of ice down in front of her. She left the restaurant with the ice, chewing on some, and some random lady came up to her and scolded her about how "bad" it was. stare I'm still trying to decide if this custom is weirder than how they never fail to shut a door behind themselves or anyone else who leaves one open. xp Forget to shut a door and at least ten Germans will stand up to shut it after you.

http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/stonesadults/#whatis
This site says absolutely nothing about temperature effecting kidney stones......and I don't see why it would, it makes no logical sense. Everything that goes through your body is completely destroyed and warmed up in your stomach. It doesn't matter if it's cold or hot when it goes in your mouth.

One of the strange things I learnt from German, is that whenever you order water, or ask for water anywhere, they will only give you bottled water.
To be perfectly honest, I think botled water tastes freaking terrible! I'd rather have tap water any day. gonk

Everything is flavored in Germany.
