Shaky lines are more of a product of how you work your pen on your tablet (if you're using those first off). Gotta feel out indiviually how to make it work. Besides, imprefection is key sometimes.
Mesh shading was okay too, but it's a tad too manufactured for my tastes. Illu is great for print layouts though...and I do love that watercolor brush effect. I'm currently doing my school's concert poster design in Illu.
But if I'm ever having outlines...I'll stick to my hand inking. Pen tool and such is nice in any program, but sometimes you can't beat traditional.
...and I haven't learned Flash yet. That's next semester.

I'm still trying to get a line art that I'd like to work with.

it's not that, I got some scanned things I can work with, but what I wanted is a new piece of artwork to use and I'm having trouble drawing it to my liking.

Ah the frustration of art...you love it when it comes out right with what seems like little effort, but when you're really concentrating it never works.
Evil, in a sense.

well I just tried to color the dragon lineart, and it doesn't work.
line image on top, other layer on bottom, tried to color and the layer on bottom doesn't show. if I put the color layer on top, it colors entirely over the line art.

Lock your Lineart layer and then make sure your second layer is selected and that your image is in RGB mode. When it scans on B&W, PS puts it in bitmap mode which you can't do anything to. Image > Mode

I just fixed that, but I still can't use any layers to color. the layer I color on simply doesn't show up. and if I put that layer above the line art, it covers the lineart completely.

Did you copy just the black lines of the lineart, or the lineart + it's white background too? You want the black lines on the top layer only.

Hehe Silly.
Always want the checkerboard backgrounds on your layers.
But no worries...we all have stupid photoshop moments.

Either way, it doesn't matter for me. I don't use Photoshop fro colouring.
And you don't need to know how to use flash to use the brush tool. (on a different layer, of course)

I know you don't need flash for such things...but I just haven't learned it yet. And I want to...but I must wait. It's like...Animation II or something.
I'm just photoshop loyal I suppose.
