Luke smiled softly and sighed, taking Kuro and carrying him. "Alright. Let's go find Maria..."

Kaya nodded, following after her husband and son.
Maria was still sitting on her fallen tree, not crying, but instead just sitting there and staring at the ground. "Sweetheart?" the soul-stealer asked. Maria bolted up, rushing for her mother. "I thought he hurt you! I thought he..." "Sh, sh, it's gonna be alright," the soul-stealer said, petting her daughter's hair and holding her tightly. Before she took the necklace from her daughter's hand and extracted her soul. "It's time you had this back," she said softly, and the soul entered Maria's body. The girl's eyes widened, then cleared from their white color they'd been while looking at the soul, to the dark brown they should be.

Luke looked with Kaya, soon catching Maria's scent. "She's up here. Maria! You here?" he called, glancing around some, still holding Kuro, who had gone to sleep.

"Say you're here," the soul-stealer hissed into the ear of the girl she held. Maria struggled, but she was no longer a creature. She was weakened from the sudden soul morphing, and she was disoriented. "I-I'm here!" she called out. The soul-stealer had an arm wrapped around her waist, and a knife pressed to her neck.

Luke followed Maria's voice, only to stumble upon a scene he didn't want to. He growled some and handed Kuro off to Kaya. "Let her go."

The soul-stealer raised an eyebrow. "But you know you traded your daughter's soul for your wife's. Why do you care about her any more now? Do you not want your wife to know how horribly you've treated this girl? You've accused her of being a soulless monster, tried to force her to be someone she's not, and then guiltlessly convinced her that the woman who raised her was dead." Maria continued to struggle against her mother. "If you let me have her, soul and all, then she'll come live with me and be as safe as she was before. However, in case you haven't noticed, she has her soul right now. Which means that if this knife goes any closer to her throat, she dies."
Kaya looked appalled as she clutched Kuro. "Luke..."

Luke's ears slicked back as the soul-stealer spoke of his bad behavior. He deserved no less. "I have done horrible things yes, and I should be punished for it. But that doesn't give me the option of letting my wife go without one of the children she brought into the world. I cannot deny her that." he said, looking to Kaya, then back at the soul-stealer. "Take my soul. Take it in place of her. Let my wife have her children." he said, slightly begging to the soul-stealer.

"No! I want a child! Why does she get two, and I can't even have one?!" the unhappy ex-mother clutched Maria tighter and began to back away. Kaya sighed and walked up to her husband, handing him their son. She walked towards the soul-stealer, who flinched, but stopped. "You won't hurt her. I know it, and you know it. I'm sorry that your child died, but you can't just steal another child to replace her. It will never be the same."

Luke took Kuro and watched Kaya completely diffuse the situation. He was horrible at trying to save people... Which made him feel like quite the failure. He'd just offered up his own soul to get his daughter back and not only was the offer shot down, his wife came in for the save. He felt so useless... But he kept those thoughts to himself for now. Kaya didn't need to worry about him right when she got back.

Kaya put her hand on the soul-stealer's shoulder, and the crying woman released Maria, who fell to the ground, coughing, before scrambling away. "Perhaps it's time to go see your real daughter," Kaya said softly. The soul-stealer nodded, and turned, leaving the small portion of a larger family. Quickly, Kaya knelt down by Maria and looked over the girl, gauging if she was alright or not.

Luke walked over to the two, waiting to see if Maria was alright. He was still holding Kuro, who, miraculously, was still sound asleep in his father's arms. How he was still sleeping so soundly was quite the mystery.

Maria looked up at Luke, then back at Kaya. "So, you got what you wanted."

Luke watched them and smiled a little. "Yes. And I don't deserve it."

Kaya hugged Maria. "He really cares, y'know. He's just not so great at taking things in stride," Kaya whispered to her daughter. Then, she stood, helping Maria up. The cheetah put an arm around Luke and Kuro, and another around Maria. "Next time someone does something like this, I'd like to not have to put the remnants of my family together, please."

Luke smiled, kissing Kaya's cheek softly. "I'll try to stay out of trouble." he said, adjusting his grip on Kuro.
