Why was all the candy so cute?! "Thank you!" She giggled and examined her chocolate bat. Maybe someday she'd try to make her own candy for Halloween, these were too adorable to eat!
"No?" Kiessi asked quiet, tilting their head from one side to the other. "Maybe we can figure out what you like someday. I'll help you if you ever want it. I'm not really sure what I like either, yet.. but I do think they'd be cute in little outfits, don't you think?" They smiled when they saw both foxes. "They could be twins! How cool!" They lifted a small hand down to pet both of the foxes when an attendant smiled at them.
"What do you think about this one?" She asked, motioning toward a feline familiar that had been staring at them. "I think it likes you!"
Kiessi's grin turned wide, "Oh man! Really?!" They reached out their hand. "Hey Little Guy, want to join us? The familiar jumped from where it was perched and rubbed against Kiessi's leg.
The top of the stairs opened into a hall covered in spider webs. There were tiny movements in the webs--silent testament that the diaphanous tenements were still occupied. The cobwebs were so thick that there was no way to go down one end--the stretched across the entire corridor. Quilo squinted in that direction. There was a dark shape at the other end of the corridor. It looked like a janitor's cart. Right, so that area was entirely cut off for a reason. Which left one room at the top of the stairs, the door slightly ajar. There was a soft sound coming from inside it. The sound set Quilo on edge and he shivered. He reached up to his helmet to pet the nezubat, who nuzzled his fingers. "I can do this," he said.
He grasped the doorknob and gently pulled it open. It opened without a sound, but something fell from the ceiling and hit Quilo on the head. The nezubat squeaked in displeasure, flapping its wings. Quilo knelt down and smiled. A pack of gum and a stuffed bat! Well, that was worth it, definitely! With the prizes stowed away in his bucket, he walked into the room.
When Neptune made no move to take the dart, Sara picked up another one and aimed carefully. She felt like her arm was shaking all over, but with a deep breath, she steadied herself and threw. There was a loud pop! as a green balloon burst, revealing its paper content. The game master scooped it up once again. "You get a ghost and a plush, young lady!" he said.
"Thank yah," she said again. She looked up at the ghosts that were dangling above her and pointed out one with spiral eyes. "How about this one? And...what sorta plushes can Ah choose?" The game master had both vespercat plushes and nezubat plushes hung up on the sides of the tent.
He hit himself in the forehead with the palm of his hand. "Totally forgot!" he said with a chuckle. "Ah, that's one of the nezubat plushes." He pointed them out.
Sara peered at them. They appeared to have every color there. So which one should she pick? She looked down at her bucket, checked what colors she had, and looked back up at him. "Th' black one with the orange wings, please," she said.
"Right you are," he said, and handed the prizes to her. She thanked him once again and turned to Neptune.
"Ah'm startin' t'get kahnda tahred," she murmured. "Maybe we should head back, meet up with Maria back on campus?"
Histeol had allowed his mother and sister to pick his costume for the year. He'd never dressed up for Haunted Hallows, but they had firmly insisted that it was a tradition. Cal had pointed out that even she was dressed for the occasion--albeit as an "undercover scarecrow." Which apparently meant lots of yarn and some feathers. It had been Mom's idea to dress him up as a crow--she thought it would be cute if both of her children looked like they matched. It was an interesting thought...though it might have worked better if Histeol hadn't fallen asleep in the early part of the evening, letting Cal wander off on her own. But when he finally woke up and his mother shooed him along to "find your sister and go have fun," he set off resolutely, his cane sweeping a path in front of him. He collected a bucket from the nice lady at a table somewhere, and set off in search of his sister.
She actually wasn't all that hard to find. Or rather, Eidil wasn't hard to find. She had sort of a loud, high-pitched voice. He found her by something with lots of water in it. As he passed by someone, they dropped something in his bucket. From the sound of it, it was someone his age. He felt around. Apparently, it was a hand. Made of...popcorn? Interesting. He tapped his sister on the back of the ankle and held up his bucket. "Trick or treat!"
"Teo, it's me," his sister said from above him.
"Yes," he said. He smiled. People liked it when he smiled. Or so Mom and Cal and Eidil said. "Trick or treat!"
Eidil laughed. "Oh my goshes, Teo, you are so cute! You're a little crow, oh my goshes, I love it! You want to come trick-or-treating with us?"
Teo nodded. "Yup! That's why I came to find you!"
Eidil laughed. She had a nice laugh, even if it was very high-pitched. "Yep, he's your brother, alright!" she said, presumably to Cal. "Come on, you Fallen crows, let's find some fun!" She reached down to take Teo's elbow with one hand and Cal's with the other, and pulled them along.
P.I. Glitch was on a roll, another treat for the basket, another step closer towards the crook.
Glitch: "If things kept up like this I'll have more pieces of candy than a grandmother's purse. No time to doddle though, rookie lets pick up the pace."
There was a bounce in their steps now, a rush in their pace. Good luck like this can't last forever and just as they thought this they came upon the next house. With a rush of kids beside and behind them Glitch got pushed to the front and had first pick into the candy bowl. To their surprise however they couldn't have done any worse.
Yuck- who would put such a thing into a candy bowl? Anymore grabs like this and Glitch would be outa the game and some poor sucker of a kid will probably loose their stash to the thief.
Stuffing their hands into their wooly pockets Glitch walks away with a much slower pace. The other freshlings after recieving their tricks or treats rushed off to the next house and as Glitch was about to hurry off themselves they felt the ominous sense that they were being watched. Slowly they turned their eyes to the darkened spot between the houses. It was hard to make out sense the house next to the one they had just been to had their lights off, but there was definately something lurking there in the shadows. And for a second Glitch could have sworn he seen a pair of gleaming eyes.
It didn't take the senior long to make it to the dorms and back, dropping off the cat in the process. He'd also dropped off the goodies he'd managed to accumulate during his first run through of the festival. He wasn't entirely sure what he was going to do with the two plushies he'd gotten so far, but he'd find some way to get rid of them. Probably trade it for something else.
Now, to decide whether or not he wanted to go back to the haunted houses or try his hand at a couple of the games again. He'd adjusted a couple pieces on his costume to make it easier to move around in, so maybe trying a new game was worthwhile. His mind made up, the imp made his way towards one of the booth games. This time it was his favorite sport, soccer. All he had to do was kick three balls into the goal in less than thirty seconds. Simple. With a few swift kicks he got all three of the suckers into the net and had won himself a prize. "Dark chocobat, you are mine," he claimed. Within seconds of being set in his hand the bat had already started to melt, so he was quick to put that in his bucket. "Hopefully you'll stop melting in there."

After making sure that her extra snitched goodie was well hidden, and giving a glance over her shoulder at the friend stealer, Hailey continued dragging Malachi off for more Trick-or-Treating. "This is the most fun I've had since you left, Khai~ Everyone else at home is so boring now." And then they made their next stop. It was a suspicious looking bucket of sorts... could they trust this thing?... "You go first, Khai~"
Malachi watched over his shoulder as well, giving a sad look as he was pulled away from his new mom. But even with Hailey being a brat and keeping them separated, mom was still smiling and giggling. At least he knew she'd be okay. He was pulled from his thoughts suddenly as he bumped into Hailey as they reached their next stop. Eyes widening as he peered down, he then shook his head. But after his friend gave a playful tease, calling him chicken, he puffed himself up and dove that little hand of his right into the bucket.
Malachi gave an excited look as he pulled out a bag of candy corn! This was something he could share with Hailey! But not only that, there was a little bat plushie stuck to it some how! Happily, the little Fallen stuffed the bag in his bucket, then snuggled the little bat. It was too cute and he loved it! Smiling to his friend, he gave a nod, knowing this would be good for her, too!
Well seeing what her best friend pulled from the bucket made Hailey dive right into it. As her little hand wrapped around something, she gave a strange look.... it felt... squishy.... Slowly she pulled her hand out and looked to see that she had poo in her hand! "AUGH!" she shouted, flinging it on the ground. "Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross!" Angry from feeling cheated, she reached back in, snitching up something else. "A derpy puffy thing? Poo....errr... no poo..." Giving Malachi one of those looks, she snitched up the now discovered candied poo from the ground, stuffing it in her bucket. She couldn't help it, she was a hoarder after all. "Let's go... There's gotta be something better down the way..." And so she grabbed Malachi's hand once more, dragging him off again.
Eidil had a good, strong grip on Histeol's elbow, which was not entirely welcome, but she also had a good eye for fun and games, which was entirely welcome. She lead Teo and his sister around several crowds of kids who were obviously playing games, but stopped at one booth. "The other games were mostly ball throwing ones," she said. "But this one's just a guess the material game."
Teo had no idea what that meant. "So...what do we do?" he asked.
Another voice--this one an adult voice--replied. "We have boxes here full of something. You reach your hand in and try to guess the material. If you guess correctly, you win a prize."
That...actually sounded pretty good. Teo put his bucket down on the ground and tugged Eidil's sleeve. "Thank you!" he said. He reached the hand forward and felt it slide through a cloth-wrapped opening into a box. He felt around. It was something slimy... "Spaghetti?" he asked.
"No," the game master said in a sly voice. Something landed in Teo's bucket. "But that's a pretty good guess anyway. Oh, hello, looks like you three have some more friends arriving!"
Teo was confused what this meant until a wet nose touched his neck. He reached out with his spare hand to feel...fur? Fur. Yes, on skin, on a skeletal frame. It was warm, but also had an odd feel to it, like a Geist's skin.
Callessa gasped from behind him. "Spectrefox!" she whispered. "They seem to be showing up a lot these days..." Teo opened his mouth. "Probably yes," Cal said in an amused voice. "You know how Mom feels about foxes."
Teo grinned at her and gently pet the fox on where he judged the face to be. It leaned its face against his hand in welcome.
"No problem, Teo," she said. She ruffled her friend's hair fondly. "You know I'm always looking out for you." The fact that everyone was on equal footing for this game was one of the reasons Eidil had picked it. Not only did it not require sight, but it was a thoughtful game, something her and Cal's inner scientists would enjoy, and besides, she'd never heard of this as a carnival game before! This was amazing! Very creative. She hoped they could have several goes at this.
She hadn't noticed the approaching animals until the game master pointed them out. Just as the fox wormed its way past their legs to approach the little freshling, something collided with Eidil's back. She didn't even need to turn around to see what it was--it was hanging onto the back of her shirt. She could feel its tiny claws. She didn't make a sound, only giving Cal a big smile. Cal was grinning at her as well. Eidil reached out and grabbed her friend's hand, squeezing it tight. She just couldn't contain her excitement! Her very first nezubat! Oh, my goodness! But she stayed quiet, and made no movement. She didn't want to startle it!
"You've got a nezubat on your back," the Chimera said, amused.
"I know," Eidil whispered. "I don't want to scare it away!" She reached cautiously behind her back and felt the little critter nuzzle her hand. "I'll just let them sit until they're ready to join the front of the party," she said. "Until then, I think it's my turn to guess, yes?"
Xeno ran up to the front steps of the next house with his new friend and the group of other kids. This house was strung all over with spider webs. It looked a little spooky--except for the goofy pumpkins on the porch. Xeno giggled. Some of them were sticking tongues--made of gourds--out, others were cross-eyed. His favorite was blowing bubbles--someone had put a bubble machine with an electric candle on top of it in the pumpkin, a bubble stick attached to the outside of the pumpkin for show.
Xeno held out his bag and joined the chorus of trick-or-treaters. When it was his turn to receive a candy, and a green candy dropped in his bucket, he looked up at the Nightmare manning the door. He took a deep breath. "I really like your pumpkins," he squeaked.
The adult smiled. "Thank you!" he said. "They were a lot of fun to carve. I prefer to make kids laugh on Haunted Hallows, rather than scream."
"Thanks!" Xeno said. He waved at the adult, who waved back, and continued to the next house.
Whoever it was who designed these events had way too much fun. For one thing, the more he toured around this place, the more consistent he saw the treats. Sure, some folks had different, weird treats, but it seemed that every game booth had the same ghosts, the same vespercat plushes, and the same nezubat plushes. Why was this way too much fun, instead of uncreative hackiness? Well, it was uncreative hackiness. But the fact that every booth had similar things meant that kids could decide, say, "I want to collect every paper ghost there is at this event, and I won't go home until I do," and then they could. As it was, Batholith thought it would be neat to collect something. For Foras, he was going to collect every Nezubat plush there was. That seemed pretty fair. After all, Foras had collected one already, he'd given the kid another, so there were...three left, after the one he'd just gotten from trick-or-treating.
It seemed, though, that he would be collecting something for himself--something chosen for him by the event coordinators. "Another rock," he muttered. Suddenly, an idea struck him. "Hey, Foras, you know how to paint, right? Could you show me?"
Odessa rounded the corner of a building when she saw a feline familiar batting around a small pebble. It glanced up at her, letting out a tiny mew before circling around to rub against her outstretched hand.
"Trick or Treat!" Kiessi held out their pail as the person pulled out a candy bar and dropped it into the bucket. "Cool! Thanks!".
Laurel couldn't believe his eyes when he was handed a stick of cotton candy after his next game of ring toss. It was so light and fluffy, the best treat ever! Well, aside from a pile of swirl pops of course, or a pile of vespercat plushies. He grinned and tore off a piece of the purple fluff, before laughing as Emma returned with yet another candy apple.
"Wow! You're going to have a lot of those to eat later, aren't you, Emma?" He said.
Emma couldn't help but laugh themselves as they won another candy apple. They'd barely finished their swirl pop and they already had too more big sweets to enjoy! How were they supposed to eat all this candy, anyway? They looked to Laurel, who was busy devouring his cotton candy like it was going to run away, and nodded. Oh yeah, they lived with a demon who ate nothing but candy, how could they forget? They could just pawn off the extras on him!

Sascha didn't know what to make of the plushie he'd been handed, or the pile of stale candy, either. However, the smile on his daughter's face soothed his nerves a tad. Finally, maybe the candy corn she had now would make her calm down.
Dahlia tore the candy bag open mercilessly and popped a handful of candy corn into her mouth. Yay! Something that didn't taste bad or crumble when you opened it! Hopefully this meant that there was more candy coming up!

After getting the last nezubat plushie on the block, Sequoia turned to head back to the park to play more games. It was probably time that she checked in with a caretaker, too, right? Maybe they were doing roll calls and were already looking for her? She wiggled at the thought of people worrying about her and hustled her steps, only to be blocked by a Vespercat with a popcorn hand in it's mouth.
"Eww, that's gross, don't eat that!" She scolded, taking the offending plastic hand away from the feline. "... You don't want to follow me home, too, do you?"
The Vespercat mewled and nuzzled against her, confirming her suspicions. Okay, two's company, three's a crowds, hopefully no one else wanted to give her stuff in exchange for a new home!
