in the comics he becomes the Green Goblin. another villain, Jack O'lantern...finds a stash of GG's stuff and becomes the first Hobgoblin. the second hobgoblin sells his soul for power, and becomes a demonic hobgoblin. later, due to i think the involvement of Dr. Strange, the demonic entity that made the second hobgoblin is cast from the host, and becomes the Demogoblin, who, in a strange quirk, hunts heroes and villains alike.

after a long period, Harry eventually stops being GG. at least for awhile. but I thnk eventually the drugs and such that he becomes addicted to (replaced in the movie with the 'goblin serum') drive him back into being the goblin.

Wow kids. Can't we just say that those Comic Gods are extremely pissed at certain movie makers and are boycotting the film and all us other mortals who are painfully ignorant to the whole series will go see and possibly enjoy the movie and leave it at that?

Yes, I am a mortal in this situation. I admit that freely. Jason...Noah, I bow to you as the CBGs.

I take it like I took Harry Potter. Didn't read it, not planning to, watch the movies...pretty good in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of Harry Potter. books or the movies. I do like Snape, and I like Lucious and Voldemort. I like the attitude of Lucious and Snape, and they did a good job I think on Voldemorts makeup.

however, I am highly annoyed in the books, from teh get go. about Harry.

first, I don't see, as much as they flaunt how much more powerful older wizards are then younger ones, that harry even can so much as lift a finger to the likes of Lucious/Voldemort/Death Eaters and not get killed.

Second, I thought the 'voldemort transfered his powers when he tried to kill you on accident' thing was a poor copout reason for it.

third, Azkaban Prison. those Dementor things are supposed to be able to suck you dry when there's only 1 or 2 working on you, yet at least 2 people have been able to escape with little apparent trouble/injuries/side effects.

Harry's 'accomplishments' are WAY overdone:

the youngest Tri-Wizard Champion.
the only person to face Voldemort, and live...not once, but on several occasions. and Dumbldore has serious issues dealing with this guy.
the youngest seeker in a century
his 'incredible' power in magic/ability for his youth. (facing voldemort/being able to create a full petronous/parseltongue)

he always seems to be the youngest, most amazing wizard...yet he can't do hardly a damn thing without Herminie/Dumbledore/Hagred/Minerva helping/saving him.

I'm waiting for a one on one with Voldemort or hell Lucious without someone savng his a** and hoping he gets the ever loving hell beat out of him without a chance to really defend himself.

^^ Can't please everybody.

I'm usually pretty laid back about the books I read. I want to enjoy it, not sit there mumbling. (although I did get annoyed at Harry's um....emoing in book five)

The only book that I read the I did not enjoy at any point was Ann McAffry's "the White Dragon." xp I won't touch her stuff now.

Ruth wasn't bad. But Ruth was hardley a part of the story.

Reading about a character that spent most of his time being horny, and then concluding the climax in one paragraph, didn't exactly leave me drooling for more.

Okay point made. Jaxom wasn't too interesting, but I still loved little Ruth.

Hmm, for not being a big fan you sure know enough about it Jason. I think part of the point is to empower kids and just give an entiertaining story. Who likes a loser or someone who's superpowerful and doesn't need anyone else? Nobody. She's done a good job of not making Harry the only one that everyone goes to see by putting in all kinds. The dorky friend, the geeky girl, the bully. Stereotyped sure, but as proven many times archetypes actually work.

The final book will have a fight between him and Voldemort. One of them has to die...at least that's what Rowling set up for in the sixth, or was it fifth..I've lost track.

My mother is a megafan.

but what I mean is they make him out to be something he's not. if you were to take just the dialog describing Harry's abilities, you'd think he was a freaking god amoung wizards.

however, upon taking in the whole context, he's a talented wizard in training that has very little real skills, geting by through sheer damn luck 2/3 of the time.

that kinda thing annoys me. alot. things like this:

the youngest ever Tri Wizard Champ. Only accomplished because the fake Mooney got him in, and then arranged for him to have the items and taught him what he needed to know or do to win the events.

youngest seeker in a century. sheer dumb luck of catching a ball and one of the members of the staff, ie Minerva, basically putting him on the team and then supplying him with his 'nimbus 2000' broomstick.

the Petronous. Natural talent, sure. but the only reason he even knows the spell, which from the way it sounds when it's brought up, is a much higher level year spell that he was taught secretly by Lupin. (this equates to someone who's a good 10 grade writer being tutored by say, a teacher teaching classes for college creative writing students.)

how does harry learn all these things he knows about? because Hagred or Dumbledore let him into areas in order to eavesdrop using the cloak of invisibility that dumbledore gave him. granted, it did belong to his father, but it's also supposedly the equal of giving a 13 year old a shotgun out of hand. he's not supposed to have it because of all the potential danger adn trouble he coudl get into playing with it.

The Boy Who Lived. this is of course due to his mother using her life to basically make him immune to Voldemort's power, originally. then, in the graveyard, it's the spirits of his mother and his friend that provide him the means to escape when the wands connect. and later, it's dumbledore himself that saves harry from another encounter with the Dark Lord. Harry has yet never had to stand against Voldemort without some form of outside help.

the Basilisk/Lucious. he only survives or even stands a chance against the basilisk due to Fawkes interference. which equates to Dumbledore saving his rear, basically. Lucious is only stopped by the house elf, or harry probably wouldn't have survived or been pretty seriously injured.

every single thing that is more complicated than 'go here, do that' herminie usually figures out, then tells harry 'go here, do that'.

but through out the books, everytime harry is mentioned or talked about by older wizards or other students, he's made out to be able to do all these great things on his own. makes me feel like going to hogwarts and just jackslapping everyone in the school.

Welcome to life. One person does not rise to greatness on his own. Everyoen is connected, everyone helps but not everyone gets the credit. Sometimes things we think are true aren't. Does that mean you take offense to every great man and woman in history? J.K. Rowling did nothing more than present the story of a life of a celebrity with the addition of magic. She showed it the way it happens. She showed how greatness is not possible through only one person or one event. It is a team effort in a way. Many people, many events closely connected working side by side.

To your specific examples. Youngest seeker, well his dad was a seeker. Talent is hereditary we all know that and many times the child surpasses the parent.

Patornus. Life or death situation. Mothers can pick cars off their children through adrenaline. Harry consigned himself to a fate worse than death if he didn't do something. He did something.

Lupin teaching him the patronus made sense as well. And if a tenth grader is creative enough to benefit fromt he college professor's instruction, why not? Some people are born to do great things but they still have to be guided and helped along the way. tHe tools have to be placed in their hands before they can sculpt, paint, write or even run a country.

President FDR was a great man. Everyone heralds his name in the history books. Do you think he did it alone? Do you think all those ideas for the reforms and social security and the New Deal were all his? Do you think the economic analysts who presented him with figures got any credit for their accomplishments?

Hitler. Do you think he wiped out all those Jews by himself? Yet what's the name we associate with genocide and WWII? Hitler and Germany go hand in hand. Sure some of his generals got credit. But do you really think Hitler randomly decided one day that he wanted to kill an entire religious sect? That had years in planning based on ideas from more than just himself.

Even the fricken Bible was a group effort. One man didn't write, one man didn't come up wiht Christianity.

Luther. Calvin. Great men. Made marvelous contributions to the religious world. Luther practically created Protestantism. Do you think his accomplishments were made alone?

Who taught Michelangelo to sculpt? Da Vinci to paint? Jane Austen to write? All of these people had help. Harry too has help.

Rowling's strength is her active imagination, coupled with her ability to bring in all different types. I'll admit some of her themes became cliched. Once Harry became popular he could do no wrong. But I think it's very telling of the human condition that Harry can't do anything alone. He needs his friends yet he doesn't back down when it comes to standing up to Voldemort. It's a life he didn't ask for, it was thrust upon him. He has had to stand up and face Voldemort, even with help that's a major thing.

Could you stand up to Hitler and tell him he was a b*****d when you knew he oculd take your head off? Could you tell the King that he ******** up big time and call him every name in the book? Could you mock the man who held your life in the palm of his hand?
