I do use psycho-bat-s**t TK blasts! =D

Of course, I've never used Damon at his fullest psionic potential. I see Damon as more of a martial artist than a mage. So I limit spell-like abilities where I can. =)

We should start like a knightly order for Psychic Warriors.

It would be really bad a**.

The Knights of the Emerald Lotus
The Order of Diamond Mind
The Ioun Think Tank

Maybe.

But they would hardly work together well in theory.
Especially if they all have differing origins. They're probably each suited to a team of people with their own abilities anyway.

However, it would be a cool 'honor' for a psychic warrior to be part of this order.

Order of the Empty Sky
The Untouchable Fist
Monks of the Setting Sun
The Violet Lions

So what is the opinion on characters designed to counter magic/supernatural abilities? Anti-Mage expys and the like, I mean.

It's really touchy and boils down to how they shut people down.

Stupid s**t like 'Your abilities dont work on me' pisses me off to no end.

Might as well make a character who can't be physically affected. It's the same damn thing.

Like anything else.

It can be good, or totally stupid.

Anti-magic fields as a rule of thumb is something that I really dislike, even as a guy who is mostly into martial arts.

Because while it may be effective to just completely negate a characters abilities consider that you are removing a lot of that characters flavor and a large portion of that characters design.

By using anti-magic stuff, if its anything like the typical anti-magic field, then you prevent that character from displaying his skills and looking good.

You want your opponent to look powerful and effective, because when your character contends with that opponent it will make you look just that more powerful.

Though you can take the other approach, and rather than negating the supernatural abilities you can form strategies against them...which is cool

because its forcing your opponent to use their powers in a less conventional manner.

I ask this because I'm working on a character who's essentially a mage-hating knight with magic-resistant armor. I honestly like the idea of playing a character who brute forces his way past magical woo-woo powers but at the same time it's hard to find the line where people stop going "okay I need to work around this" and they start going "OMG ******** MANGINA ICEFROG NERF PLSSSSSS".

Plus considering how massive the varieties of magic are it's pretty much impossible to come up with a method that protects against them all. Soak's osteomancy (for lack of a better term) is pretty much impossible to mitigate supernaturally because all she's doing is spawning extra bones into weapons.

So it's hard to figure out how to make a legitimate counter to mages without making it... faggy.

Mana Burn.

25% resistance

Going for a light weight gear set up to lean towards avoiding their powerful attacks or sticking close to them to disrupt them.

Edit: Lord Cameron's character s**t on Sokoya cause he just spammed clones with mana burn and shut her down.

I think the problem is that you are combining several character archetypes into one category, "spellcaster". Ok, are they an illusionist? An evoker? An enchanter? Elementalist?

I specify this because no one would ever ask "what would hard counter a melee fighter?" If you did that, you'd be grouping tanks and fragile speedsters together and it would be nonsensical.

So what I'm saying is, it depends.

There are two concepts I have come across recently which I thought might make legitimate anti magic disciplines.

You need both, the first is called pathing, and it lets by stepping into the path of the spell or ability take a percentage of the damage, and absorb the remainder of the energy.

This has the advantage of not being traditional and requiring interface with the ability itself. On the downside, if you dont do anything with the energy you get major backlash.

To this end there is grounding, which allows the path to channel the energy through physical motion back into the atmosphere or the earth, negating the majority of its stored hostile energy, or allowing the path or ground to refocus it into a specific point.

When most people use anti-magic concepts, they're really using a "anti-supernatural" approach, which is problematic.

Is an anti-magic purely useful against magic? What about psychic abilities, or ki/chi/etc? What about purely elemental abilities not derived from magic, or other supernatural abilities that aren't necessarily reliant on magic?

That's usually the problem, is that a lot of "anti-magic" characters will say "all of the above" and it won't be particularly fair because the ability is so pervasive, and usually passive in some fashion.

Blink 1150 units every 5 seconds and steal all your mana with two basic attacks.
