Bornes shoved his face in his arms some more. "If he cut me at all I would've fainted," he replied. "So even if by some miracle I hit him, it would've been a waste." He hmped and shut his eyes again, trying to fall asleep.
It wasn't going to happen.
He lifted his face from his arms, looking at the springs directly above his head. Maybe ten minutes had passed. "Kaegan thought we were a couple," he finally said. It was random, awkward, and out of place. He knew. He just wanted to break the silence. "He thinks we're in love with eachother."
At least he had found a better way to word it.
"Do I look gay to you?" he asked, the tip of his tail wagging slightly between his legs uncomfortably. "Is it the tail?"

Isiah bit the inside of his cheek, but it did little to hide a hearty laugh that rose from his chest. Q and him?... please. He wagged his head wearily, yawning behind his hand. "It's not you," he said quickly. "It's because you're with me. Kaegan wouldn't know gay if it cockslapped him across the face, so he just assumes anyone I run with is..." He paused. "Well. In it for the benefits, I guess. I wouldn't take it too seriously."

Bornes snorted at Isiah's stifled laughter.
"Yeah, I'm sure," he groaned, turning to his opposite side and trying to get in a tighter ball. It wasn't going to work. He knew it wasn't. But Isiah had made him feel like crap by laughing at him. What was so funny? Kaegan had laughed too. Kaegan didn't believe it. Did Isiah?
He gave a long sigh, and waited a few more minutes, still trying to sleep even though he knew the effort would be futile.
"I can't sleep," he mumbled, finally. But he didn't move from his spot under the cot. He actually shuddered a bit, wondering what was going to happen next.

Isiah sat up and swung his legs over the cot. "Why. Not comfortable?" Oh, he knew why. He knew Q was probably musing long and hard over his supposed gayness. Isiah didn't really understand why it was such a problem for Q- why his masculinity was so easily hurt. It seemed to happen increasingly often these days.
Isiah felt he was more masculine than Q, gay or not. The way they conducted themselves set them apart on the scale by many, many degrees. And yet he never felt the need to well.. prove it the way Q did, or the need to nurse his hurt ego like a wound.
"I don't know why you let other people get to you so much," he began, after a long silence. "For someone who used to kill people for a living.. you sure are sensitive. I always thought murder had a way of hardening the heart."

Bornes sighed, waited a moment before he bothered crawling out from under the bed. He sat on the ground, bringing his tail to hug his leg and his hands to his ankles to look up to Isiah.
"I care what people above me think. And I killed from many, many yards away. It was never more personal than a way to get money." He looked away.
He groaned and stood up, stetching a bit, then sitting on the bed next to Isiah. "I never used to care, this much. I just minded my own business."

He quirked a brow upward, folding his arms over his knees, rolling his head on his shoulder slowly. "Kaegan isn't above you. He's your level. Or lower, considering what he is." He sighed, shoulders low, his muscles tense. "And if you never cared, it makes me wonder why you do now."

Bornes looked to Isiah in slight disbelief. "How could you say that? Of course he's above me. He used to be Marine." He looked down to his hands. "I'm a deserter."
He let out a sigh, putting his hands on his knees. He had something more to say, but hesitated for a few moments, choosing his words.
"I never had a reason to care, before. I guess," he finally confessed.

Isiah gave Q a confused look. "A fat lot of good that's doing him, Q. The marines aren't here anymore. In ten or twenty years, everyone who knew what they were will be dead. The rest will just be hearsay."
He rubbed the back of his neck with a long soft sigh, rolling his eyes shut, shaking his head slowly back and forth. "Your priorities are so backward... I wonder about you."

Bornes tilted his head slightly. Hearsay. Isiah was right. But Bornes would make an excuse, regardless. "It's about respect..."

"It's about survival. What Kaegan thinks or does is not essential to our survival, so you shouldn't care about it. Those are your priorities." Isiah paused for a long moment. "OUR priorities. Or that's what they should be."
He leaned back against the crumbling brick wall, folding his hands behind his head. "What do you care about, Q? What's important? What Kaegan thinks because he used to be something?"

Bornes let out a small groan.
"I don't know. Everything has changed. Changed much more than I was expecting. I care about myself, I care about... how other people view me."
He ran his left hand through his hair. "I've had this mask on for a such a long time, and I have finally taken it off. I don't like this, but I also don't feel like going back. Not with how frank you have been with me."

Isiah turned to look at him, his brow furrowed inward, trying to read him. He didn't get it. How could someone supposedly smart enough- patient enough- calculating enough to wait out and kill a man.. Couldn't make sense of his own, admittedly simple emotions boggled him. He turned his eyes away, sighing.
"Don't feel like going back to WHAT?"

His eyes met with Isiah's, trying to read the other, and also failing.
"Pretending something I'm not. Pretending I don't care. Were you not the same way before the fallout? Pretending to be someone you were not?"

"I put on my mask to survive. You put on yours to protect your ego. Different story."
He released a long groan. He was strangely frustrated with Q, unjustifiably so, and he knew it's because Q had this strange reverence and respect for Kaegan that had mirrored his own when he was young- and he now considered, stupid.
"I don't know, Q. You want to be all touchy feely and stuff, fine, suits me. It's easier when you're just honest anyway."

Bornes snorted. "Thanks," he mocked.
He wasn't sure why that comment had made him feel bad about himself, but he didn't feel like continuing if Isiah was going to be so passive agressive.
